An Earlier Report
Brownwood Texas May 30 The
terrific and terrible cyclone that
swept through the business and resi
dence section of Zephyr last night
about 12 oclock carried death and
destruction almost inconceivable in
its path Most of the business houses
in the town were either entirely
swept out were burned or were
wrecked Lightning struck the stone
building of the Zephyr Mercantile
company which burned to the
ground together with the lumber
yard and the office of the Zephyr Mir
ror About thirtyfive or forty resi
dences were wiped completely off the
earth not even the foundations being
left Dozens of others were almost
completely ruined The fine stone
school building and the Methodist and
Baptist churches were totally de
stroyed
Twentysix people were killed out
right about six others will probably
die and some twenty are seriously in
jured so much so that the result can
not be safely foretold County Clerk
Thad T Cabler his wife and two
children who were there visiting
were killed as were also Mrs Hart
wife of Thos Hart and little son
Robert of Brownwood
At 1215 last night a cyclone struck
the little town of Zephyr the first
station on the Santa Fe east of here
and almost completely destroyed it
Thirty dead and a score of more in
jured was the awful scene to greet
the survivors after the cyclone had
gone The cloud came from the west
and first struck in the edge of town
and cut a strip three hundred yards
wide through the most thickly settled
part of town and not a building was
left in Its path
The first news to reach Brownwood
of the storm was brought by a man
who came from Zephyr on a handcar
and asked that help be sent at once
A relief train containing physicians
and all who could be summoned to go
and assist in the relief work left here
at 4 oclock this morning The regu
lar train which leaves here at 7 a m
also carried a large number to assist
in the work Another train carrying
food clothing and bedding went again
at noon
The people of Zephyr are dazed at
the awfulness of the disaster but peo
ple from here who went to the relief
of the sufferers have the matter well
in hand and different committees
have been appointedto look after the
wants of the sufferes and to attend to
the burying of the dead

did it The police and sheriffs de
partment are working on the case
but although it is reported that clues
have been found there is not suffi

Robbery was undoubtedly the mo
tive as Mr George is not known to
have had an enemy He conducted a
stall at the city market and usually
remains there until late at night
Last evening his wife and son and
daughter visited another daughter
Mrs R H Fennell at 1107 Harrington
streetwho Is very ill They did not
retunhome until 3 oclock this morn
irjgfehen ttiey found Mr George in
hfs buggy where he had been as
saulted
The horse had evidently found his
way home without guidance although
it seems certain that the assault had
been made at a point not far distant
from the residence as Mr George
was seen to pass a drug store about
ten blocks from his home and he
had r ot been molested up to that
time At some point between the
drug store and home he had been
set upon robbed and left for dead
