today with all the dignity and splendor befitting such an occa sion From the White House Presi dent Taft started the electric spark which communicated the energy to the shafting of machinery hall and amid the tumultous shouts of thou sands the music of numerous bands and the waving of flagsthe wheels began toturn The great fair design ed to exploit the industries and re sources of the Far West Alaska and the Pacific island possessions of the United States was an accomplished fact An event of such magnitude could not haye been initiated under more favorable auspices Everything moved with the smoothness of a well regulat ed military family amid all the mu sic the firing of salutes the cheers of the reat throngs and the animat ed scenes jn and about the handsome and imposing structures composing f T tlje exposition Seattle was early astir in anticipa tion of the great event Long before t 8 oclock this morning the hour fixed for the admittance of the public the street cars on the Wallingford East e and other lines leading from the downtown section to the exposition giounds were filled to capacity Be fore the gates had been opened an j nourlt was apparent that the esti j f mated attendance of 100000 for the xiay Was likely to be exceeded The various structures on the grounds were crowded early in the day and toward noon the scene was one of general activity Everything was in motion The white buildings glittered inr gay decorations the visitors car ried flags in their hands and every thing throughout the two hundred acres washed on one side by the rip T > ng waters of Lake Washington and j 3 Ltlig other 3r Lake Union present the exposilio was thronged f opening hour The program of the day was usher ed In promptly at 9 oclock with a mighty boom of cannon fired in mar tial salute by a mounted battery This was the signal for the formation of a military and naval parade through the exposition grounds The procession comprised United States cavalry and infantry sailors and ma > rines from Admiral Sebrees Pacific fleet and a detachment from Admiral Ijichis Japanese squadron The formal ceremonies began in the exposition amphitheatre promptly at 1030 oclock Occupying seats on the platform were the officials and guests of the exposition Included among the latter were Lieutenant Governor James Dunsmuir of British Columbia Governor W S Hoggatt of Alaska Governor J H Brady of Ida ho Governor F W Benson of Ore gon Governor Gillett of California Governor William Spry of Utah and Governor M E Hay of Washington At a signal from Director General Nadeau while the guests were being seated Innes Band of Cliicago played America The enthusiasm was in tense Thousands cheered and waved their flags Some time was neces sary to restore order Then Bishop ODea of Seattle opened the formal execises by Invoking the divine bless ing Director General Nadeau made a brief Introductory address and was followed by the other speakers on the program These included James J Hill and Congressman Rodenberg At L to the conclusion of Mr Hills address greetings were exchanged between President Taft and President J E Chilberg of the expostion The amphitheatre was electrically connected with the telegraph room of the White House and President Taft pressed the button which in this case was made of Alaska marble and ornamented with nuggets of solid gold that started the wheels in machin ery nail and thus actually opened the great exposition An artillery salute was fired imme diately after the receipt of the mes sage from President Taft and this wasfollowed by a beautiful daylight pyrotchenical display Meanwhile the guests of honor adjourned to the New York state building where an official luncheon was served The guests numbered nearly three hundred and included the visiting governors may ors of the surrounling cities and others who have contributed toward the success of the exposition Unlike most of its predecessors the Seattle exposition opens complete in every detail All of the construction work was finished several weeks ago the debris removed the walks flower beds fountains statuary and other works of ornamentation completed and the exhibits installed Through out its vast extent the big fair opens with every feature in readiness for the welcome and entertainment of the tens of thousands of visitors who are expected to pass through its gates this summer AlaskaYukonPacific Exposition Artists who had an opportunity to see the grounds and buildings of the AlaskaYukonPacific Exposition be fore the official opening day were de lighted with its scenic and architec turalfeatures and did not hesitate to declare it the most beautiful exposi tion ever seen in this country The management spared no cost to bring about this result and speat more than IlijOJKIjOOO on the buildings grounds injnitftje for the work rof man N6 other exposition could boast of so glorious a sight as the panorama of Mt Rainier Mt Baker and the gla ciers of the Cascade Mountains of which the most favorable view may be obtained by the visitor from the Cascades and the Gejser basin the two principal ornamental features of the exposition Plan of the Exposition The main buildings of the exposi tion are grouped around the Cascades and geyser basin They include the large government building at the head of the basin to the north and sym metrically disposed on both sides of the basin the Alaska Hawaii Fish eries Mines Agriculture and Manu factures buildings Back of Agricul ture Hall toward The Pay Streak which is the equivalent of Chicagos Midway is the Foreign Exhibits building while in a similar position back of the Manufactures building is the King County Exposition Hall Be tween the building for foreign ex hibits and The Pay Streak Is the Canadian building and east of the King county building aro located Ma chinery Hall and its annex a struc ture of the same size as Machinerj Hall At the southern end of the basin are the Music Pavilion and the buildings of China and Japan sur rounded by native villages and other outdoor exhibits The large space atthe southern end of the grounds between Lake Union and Lake Washington contains the stadium which has a seating capacity of more than twelve thousand the AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH REV A D SPARKMAN PASTOR model farm and the stock exhibit In the extreme northeastern corner of the grounds is the natural amphi theatre around which are grouped the large Forestry building several state buildings the buildings of Oregon Michigan Washington New York Chicago California Missouri the Arctic Brotherhood Chehalls Spo kane and the Philippines Many of the buildings are permanent struc tures and will later become part of the University of Washington The enormous Auditorium the Fine Arts building and several administration and service buildings are grouped in the northwestern pait of the grounds Idaho has its building close to the Fine Arts building The Pay Streak The amusement features of the ex position upon which a great deal of thought has been spent are grouped around what is called The Pay Streak It ocntains the usual attrac tions which were seen at nearly every one of the large expositions and in addition many new features or less common ones There is a village of Siberian Eskimos an Igorrote vil lage the Oregon Trail represent ing pioneer life in the northwest a Spanish theatre and a large arena with a seating capacity of four thou sand where during the exposition ath letic contests of all kinds will be held Another interesting feature is the representation of a Klondike placer mine and representations of scenes along the Yukon trail Many Interesting Exhibits This Is the first exposition which has not asked financial assistance of the government The government however has not neglected this fair but has spent more for its buildings and exhibits there than at any pre One of the last photos taken of Gen John H 600000 The Alaskan exhibit is one of the most interesting owing partly to the fact that it represents a territory but little known in the states east of the Rocky Mountains Many of the states have erected fine buildings The largest state building is that of California which is con structed in mission style Two other buildings of unusual interest and of attractive appearance are the forestry building and the immense log cabin built by the Arctic Brotherhood Both buildings will later be used by the University of Washington Another remarkable feature of the exposition is the fine collection of totem poles from Alaska and the mag nificent Exposition Monument eighty feet high and covered with many thou sand dollars worth of virgin gold from the Yukon country All through the grounds restaurants rest rooms drinking fountains and other conveni ences for the visitors have been lib erally provided and the lighting ar langements are excellent in all parts of the grounds fc ix > TO GO
