TUESDAY JUNE 11909
FOR YOUR HEALTHS SAKE
PUBLIC HEALTH LEGISLATION
Many of the states in the union
are awakening to the Importance
of providing proper care for the
tuberculosis poor This includes
careful consideration of the early
stage and therefore curable cases
as well as those in the advanced
and incurable class The object
of legislation of this kind is pro
tection and to prevent the spread
of this allpervading foe to human
life
There is too the broad human
itarian side of the question which
demands that those stricken with
consumption and who are too poor
to provide for themselves the
needed care and treatment be giv
en a chance for their lives and
at the stage when their cases may
be cured
But over and above all other
considerations Is the allimportant
demand that tuberculosis be
stamped out

The fact that all of the business

represented in this Booster Edition of
the Daily Herald is a source of regret
on the part of the management all
were given a cordial invitation but
were not solicited on the basis of
bookagent methods That a few of
our citizens have not caught up with
the procession of men of modern
times is their misfortune not our
fault It is however a relief to know
that Dead Ones and Knockers are
growing fewer in number in the City

ABOUT TAX RATES
One of the lowest tax rates levied
in any Texas county is that of Ander
son county This year property is
taxed 2S cents on the 100 valuation
Add to this the state tax of 23 cents
collected last year and you have a
state and county tax of 51 cents on
the 100 valuation Compare these
figures with those of your county and
state if you are a nonresident Then
take into consideration the fact that
Texas has the largest permanent
school fund of any state in the union
with a system of free schools second
to none The state tax will be even
lower this year than last Texas op
erates what is known as the auto
board each year
xation based on
hudgeijr 1thjd
1
increasedvalues This taxJwillibe
constantly lowered until it is predict
ed the tax will possibly be as low as
G cents
The tax rate in the city of Palestine
is also low This year it is fixed at
110 on the 100 valuation and it
has been fixed at this rate for years
past
So the tax rate city county and
state collectively is 1G1
Take into consideration the fact
that there is paid into the fund for
operating the public schools of the
state G75 for every child within the
scholastic age and figure out the
position of the man with a modest
home and a family of several children
within the scholastic age In tuition
Tor these childien he will get back
from the state much more than he
pays the state in taxes Say this man
lives at Palestine and that his chil
dren are enjoying the advantages of
the citys splendid free schools We
will estimate his home at 1000 His
city county and state taxes on this
home would he 1G10 Then say he
has three children of scholastic age
in the schools They would get from
the state 2025 or 415 in excess of
the amount of taxes paid The chil
dren thus become an asset
And what else do you get for this
tax You get the privilege of living
in one of the best states of the union
in one of the best and most fertile
pounties where good government and
ood order prevail and you can live
in the best little city on the face of
he eaith well governed having the
commission form of government
lean and healthful delightful cli
mate excellent churches the best of
school public and private and the as
sociation of the best people on earth
ROGERS GREAT FORTUNE
The press dispatches tell us that H
H Rogeis the Standard Oil magnate
who died a few days ago left a for
tune of 75000000
To the average mind these figures
mean nothing for the average man
anont see through the meaning of
figures as clearly as did the wise
ipostles of populism who habitually
handled figures expressed in nine or
more numerals
But to get down to that 75000000
It would take two hundred and eighty
three men working every day for
rortyflve years at 2 a day to earn
this sum Yet Rogers accumulated it
In thirty years
In the form of silver dollars it
would take three freight trains of
twentyeight cars each to carry this
vast sum
It would talte 855 teams of horses
to carry It on wagons This proces
sion would he five and onejfourth
miles long and you could stand ona
curb an hour and watch it go 1 by
If Rogers had wanted to put this
money into houses he could have built
5700 flats that would have furnished
quarters for the population tentimes
the size of Palestine
If Rogers got fair interest liis in
come from interest alone was 7500
000 a year An income tax on this
would have yielded the government
375000 and this annual sum within
ten years would have purchased a
battleship and a half
This income meant that he received
20097 a da
Rogers if he had made up his mind
to spend his 75000000 all at once
could have set up a 75 cent dinner to
every man woman and child in the
United States and in addition given
every woman a rose every man a
cigar and every child a 15 cent bag
of candy
But Rogers elected not to do this
He did not leave any part of this vast
fortune to charity or to educational
institutions he did not establish li
braries or colleges but the vast pile
was left for relatives to scramble
over
And Rogers was only one of several
who have amassed a gieat fortune
through Standard Oil
PEANUT FARMING

I
One farmer reports that he planted
peanuts on thin land that would not
make five barrels of corn to the acre
and obtained 90 bushels of peanuts
and 25 loads of peanut hay and then
fattened 15 hogs on the field at a
gain of 90 He estimates that his
return on the six acres was 280 and

1 Have a properly planned and
properly cooked dieH Make a study
of this question and have your wife
make a study of it We eat too much
meat and too much hot pasty food
We do not eat enough fruit vege
tables eggs butter and milk There
is no excuse for any farmer not hav
ing enough of these nourishing
healthgiving foods and with them
one can set a table fit for a king
2 Chew your food three times as
long as you have been doing The
Fletcher principle Chew your food
till it becomes liquid and practically
swallows itself is the only correct
guide Mr Fletcher guarantees that
his method will increase the average
mans working efficiency 2G per cent
in six months
3 Dont overeat Proper chew
ing however will practically prevent
this also Chew your food thoroughly
and your sense of taste will be satis
fied before you eat too much It Is
when you bolt your food down that
you overeat
1 Breathe only fresh air Let It
Into your sleeping room no jnatter

night air is absurd If fresh air
were only to be had for a price thou
sands of poor people would be begging
money to buy it while as It is they

Never was there a more hospitable

conditions are nearer ideal for com

The rains of the past few days have
been general and insure a bumper

the corn was never more promising
and all other crops are doing well
The season has been ideal for to

Why Because man can labor here
out doors all the year round the
lands are as productive as the valley

generally come just right it costs
less to keep your stock and nearly
everything on earth you need can be
pioduced from the ground
The foundation for many a fortune
is being laid in this section of Texas
today It is the man without judg
ment who says there are no oppor
tunities for a man to make a fortune
now as in the days agone The op
portunities are here and are more
numeious than ever Right in tills
county are vast opportunities You
will see men grasp them new
comers perhaps and after they are
worked out after fortunes are made
from them you will be asking your
self Why was I not smart enough to

resources and the possibilities of this

HOW TO
LIVE LONG
HEALTHY
AND 3E
The Starkvillo Miss Southern
Farm Gazette puts more good advice
into the following than is usually
found In so small a space Read it
and practice it and it will do you
good
All America is waking up to the
importance of better health condi
tions and state and national govern
ments are taking deeper interest in
subject than ever before Regard
what state or nation may do
every individual by foflow
W simple rules of hygiene for
seTf may greatly increase the
shut it out on every provocation
Stuffy parlors and sitting rooms and
sleeping rooms with all the windows
down breed headaches and develop
consumption
5 Drink twice as much water as
you have been drinking The average
person drinks only half enough Drink
two glasses when you get up morn
ings and as much as you can at
other times preferably not at meals
however or for an hour before or
after
G Stop dosing and drugging your
self never take a patent medicine
If you are not well by all means avoid
putting your health and your life in
the hands of men you know nothing
about and who know nothing about
your ailments Nine times out of
ten a drug taken into your system
when not needed acts as a virtual
poison and unless the physician
knows the exact nature of your ail
ment the chances are it is not need
ed
7 Let all intoxicants alone No
man who begins drinking is sure that
he can keep from drinking immod
erately while the latest medical re
seal dies have proved that even the
most moderate drinking injures ones
nervous and mental powers lessens
ones ability to resist disease and a
so aids in developing any latent dis
ease or weakness SurgeonGeneral
Wyman in his recent address on
southern health conditions sounded a
special note of warning concerning
the injurious effects of alcoholic
drinks in warm climates
Of course there are other things
not to be neglected frequent bathing
in a room as warm as the body a
bath room just big enough to turn
around in and quickly heated by an
oil stove will do the work eight
hours sleep and a good supply of
drinking water uncontaminated by
filth or disease but these seven rules
are the things most needed by the
average man They will add years to
your life and life to your years
Try them
