There is no country so little under
stood and ho generally misunderstood
as the one known ns Iceland. It is a
very old country, nnd not fur from
the great centres of European wealth
tind -culture, hut it is far from the
beaten path of travel, and heing situ
ated, according to popular notion,
within the region of eternal snow and
ice, has been unattractive to all but
the most ventursome of travelers.
It is a lorge island, about the size of
the State of Pennsylvania, ' and
although it belongs to Europe, geo'
graphically it should be credited to
America, as it is iive hundred miles
from Scotland and only one hundred
ami sixty irom ureeniand. it is
regular in shape, its coasts being fre
quently indented with fjords or bays.
Heing of volcanic origin, the natural
scenery of Iceland is the grandest and
most appalling to be found in the
world. In the interior are vast val
leys, deep abysses formed of extinct
craters, plains of brimstone, honey
combed rock and immense fields of
lava, which have filled the beds of
lakes and transformed fertile dales in
to stony deserts. 1 nese tracts are
thousands of life, and the fearful si
lence of these barrens is only broken
by the hissing of innumerable hot
springs and the constant subteranean
thunders of smoking volcanoes.
The whole surface of Iceland bears
the traces of volcanic eruptions, and
the fiery eruptions may burstr forth
at anv time. Ilecla, which stands
isolated in the center of the island
and visible from the sea on clear days
is f, 100 feet in height and has a cir
cumference of twenty-five miles. It
is one of the three great volcanoes of
Europe, the others being .Etna and
Vesuvius. Ilecla has erupted thir
teen times in the past century, but
there are others on the island quite as
furious. Skaptar-Jokul, Oriefa, Kra
bla, and four or five more are spas'
inodic volcanoes, and have been the
center of terrible eruptions. The na
tives call them slumbering volcanoes,
and for that reason are very danger
ous,as, men are tempted into a fancied
security around their bases, until
there is a sudden outburst of Hoods of
hot water, ice, stones and mud,
sweeping man and his property to de
Toward the center of the island
there are hot springs, boiling mud
lakes, and sulphurous jets of steam;
and in this district are the (ireat Gey
ser and the Strake Geyser, noted as
among the wonders of the world
Winter in Iceland extends from
October to April, and the summers
are very short. Hut it is summer,
indeed, from the 1st of June to the
10th of July, when the sun shines
day and night, or more correctly
speaking, there is no nig
ered. Hut the population is steadily
decreasing, and at the present rate of
emigration, before another century
elapses it is almost certain that the
island will be depopulated.

Adhere always rigidly uud unde-

press what is true, express it in a
pleasing manner. Truth is the pict
ure; the manner is the frame that
displays it to advantage. If a man
blends his angry passions with his
search after truth, become his super

only to tho justness and force of his
reasoning. Truth, conveyed in aus

dom has a salutary ettect, since we
reject the truth, because we are prej

the intellect can be informed. A

his unreasonable zeal, as he destroys
its salutary effects by the acrimony

Jewels of a Woman's Life.
Ladies' Home Journal.
There are so many jewels that may
be worn day and night; so many
gems that are always and only your
own, that you need not grieve for
those that show their brightness only
by day. There is the jewel of Con
sideration that you may wear just
over your heart; there is the moon
stone of Hope, that may glitter over
your brow, filling your eyes with
brightness; there is that brilliant
stone of Sympathy, the emerald that
makes you put out your right hand
of help; and there is the beautiful one
of loving Kindness, that makes the
left hand help the right. Hut abov
all, overshadowing all, pinning down
you tresses, is the diamond of true
Love love which enduretb all, suf
fereth all, hopeth all. Are not these
better than jewels dug out of the
earth? For, indeed, these jewels
come from the heaven above.
Too Good Not to Tell.
Four of us had goue to Europe to

Mr. llobinson, thebuilder of Hoston's
Trinity church, llobinson stands (i

McVickar measures G feet 4 inches ;
and Hrooks exceeds (J feet in
height, llobinson is sensitive about
his length, and suggested that in or
der to avoid comments the three tall
men avoid being seen together. Ar
riving in England, they went direct
to Leeds, where they learned that a
lecturer would address the working
classes on "America and Ameri
cans." Anxious to hear what Eng
lishmen thought of the great Repub
lic, they went to the hall. They en
tered separately, and took seats apart.
The lecturer after some uninteresting
remarks, said that Americans were,
as a rule, short, and seldom, if ever
rose to the height of five feet ten
inches. He did not know to what
cause he could attribute this fact, but
he wished he could present examples
to the audience.
Phillips Hrooks rosp to his feet and
said: "I am from America, in which
country my height six feet two is
the subject of no remark. If there be
any other American here, I hope that
he will rise."
The house was in a jolly humor.
Waiting until the excitement could
abate in some degree, and the lecturer
regain control of of his shattered
nerves, Dr. McVickar slowly drew
his majestic form to its full height,
and exclaimed: "I am an ."
Hut he got no further. The audience
roared, and the lecturer said no more
on that subject.

When no longer needed for use in

and machinery should be thoroughly
cleaned, oiled or painted and stored
away under shelter in a dry place.
Looking out over the many homes of this country, we see thousands
of women wearing away their lives in household drudgery that might be
materially lessened by the use of a few cakes of SAPOLIO. If an hour
is saved each time a cake is used, if one less wrinkle gathers upon the face
because the toil is lightened, she must be a foolish woman who would
hesitate to make the experiment, and he a churlish husband who would
grudge the few cents which it costs.
If your grocer sends you anything in place cf SAPOLIO, send it
back and insist upon havh.g just what you ordered. SAPOLIO always
gives satisfaction. On fbors, tables, and painted work it acts like a
charm. For scouring pots, pans, and metals it has no equal. Everything
shines after it, and even the children delight in using it in their attempts
to help around the house.

How to Gain in Flesh.

lewed from our standpoint, it
s.H'ms impossible that any civilized
people could live in such a desolate
land, where everjUhing conspires
against mankind, but it is an aston
ishing fact that the Icelanders are dis
tinguished for their intelligence.
There is scarcely one person in the
entire population of l:It,"R) who ran-

is slid to be the oldest in EuriC.
Iceland had her renowned poets and
authuis before Ameiie.t was discv
mikes a man thin to carry so much
effete matter around with him. In
order that there be a full and thor
ough digestion and assimilation of
food, the stomach, the liver and the
kidneys must be kept in the finest
condition. These great organs of life
frequently need the aid of various
herbal juices. It is to them w hat oil
is to machinery. It enables them to
do their work with less friction. It is
this friction that w ears out mechanic
al machinery as well as the machin
ery of life. Now science has discov
ered tho herbs that naturally aid the
movements of the stomach, liver,
kidneys and bowels. They are con
tained in that efficacious remedy
known as Dr. Hull's S nsaparilla. If
you are in a state of general ill health
give it a trial and see bow much bet
