Dr. Howard, of Tullahoma, and Mr. R. P. Baker, of Sparta, were here a couple of days of this week looking after the organization of a lodge of the Knights of Pythias. A sufficient number of signatures were secured to insure the lodge, which will probably be instituted some time during this month. Work on the streets for the pres ent season is completed, with the ex ception of putting in a few tile cul verts. The corporate authorities have expended between $1,200 and $l,r00 on the streets during the last two or three months, and they are all now in good condition. A few hard rains to wash them off thoroughly will still further improve them. There are very few towns in this r any other state which have as fine streets as McMinnville. Every street in town is will graded and traveled from one limit to the other. rood Along with the balance of the procession, we are anxious for all in debted to the Standard office to come along with the needful, but the gentlemen who have been kind enough to credit us the most, and hold balances against us, need not be in any hurry at all; we will cheerful ly grant them as much further time as they wish. A number of our merchants have expressed themselves to us as favo ring the ao-day system of collections and settlements. There should be a business men's association to consid er and agree upon such measures. It would be much easier to work this A . . or any oiner uusiness plan with a general concurrence of action among all the merchants. There were one hundred and twenty-seven marriage license Issued from the County Court Clerk's office of Warren county during the vear 18'.0. Seventy-nine of these were issued by Mr. Swann up to Sept. 1st, and forty-eight by Mr. Hammer since that date. About twentv-five were issued during the month of De cember. D.O.Jenkins feels grateful to his friends for their patronage throughout the year just closed, and hopes to receive increased favors du ring the new year. By keeping si fresh clean stock of the best grocer ies, family supplies anil confections he hopes to hold a uniform good trade to the year's end. Lowest prices for cash will be the rule throughout the year. Xext week is the evangelical week of prayer, which is observed pretty well all over the world. It has been customary for several years to observe the week in McMinnville by a series of union services alterna ting among the variour churches, but owing to the absence of nH the pas tors from town except Mr. Curry, it has peen determined not to hold the usual services this year. The types made us sav last waek that "a new hell" had been received and put up for the Baptist church. This was evidently the work of the devil, as it is simply a new bell the Baptist folks have, und if they fail to heed its clear silvery calls the same dark plutonian region awaits them as other church members who fall by the wayside. Old Nick holds a pat ent on his country, and none of it features can never be altered, amend oed or infringed. The quarterly session of the County Court next Monday will be one of the most importaut meetings f the year. The election of a Chair man and a County Superintendent of Public Instruction will take place on that day. The Court will probably oppoint a bridge committee next Monday. The first bridge should be built next summer, and it is none too early to have a committee to begin negotiations for the work. Sow for the Xew Year. Every customer having an account on our books is requested to come and make settlement at once. We thank all of our friends for past fa vors, and respectfully solicit a liberal patronage in future, which wo shall try to merit by keeping a full, fresh stock of staple and fancy groeeries.pro visions, and everything in our line. Give us a call on corner of Main and Sparta Streets, J. D. Tati: & Co. Houchln's Opewi Houhp, The l)oards of the Opera House will be occupied this (Friday) and tomor row evenings by Mortimer Murdoch's "Brave Woman" Company, who will appear in two startling Melo-Dramas, combining judiciously the humorous and the pathetic. The company, headed by Miss Ruth Aylmer and the author, is said to be an excellent one, playing with great success this season at the St. Charles and Avenue Theaters, New Orleans. The Xew York Sun characterizes "A Brave Woman" as "a great play," while "Hoop of Gold" has be come famous in all the Northern ami Western cities during an uninterupt ed run of nine successive seasons. We believe from reports that have reached us that our citizens who visit the opera home during this engage ment, have a treat in store for tliem.
