"LET US HA VE PEACE."
VOL. 4.' ALEXANDRIA, LA., SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1.872.
AuXLI IN AStA.-Lem than a year ago that
errant Prince, the Grand Ihlke Alexis, was in
this at centre of relnblicanism, adopting
Yankee customs and falling in love with Yan
. . institutions, with an abandon that was
quite delightrfnl. Since then he has drifted
ith ral m leisure artotld the worll. tonching
octasually upon a cummunicable ,xit and
then dropping out of sight again for a seaion. s
At last advioes he hobnobbing with t he Ma
harajah of Jahore, and receiving at the hands
bf that monarch the entertainnment conmmon
to the chhntry. The prinilipal fete was an
elaborately arranged tontest between a tiger
and a buffalo, most appropriate in its concep
tion, considering the tastebhr blood that the
Grand Duke acquied in chasing the bison of
our plains, but injundicionsly carried out. To
snake the combatants equal, :he tiger was 1
given opium and the buffalo arrack This com- 1
pensation arrangement was overdone. When
the curtain rose the tiger tried to sneak away,
but the intoxicated buffalo was eager for the
fray He charged his feline enemy and knock- t
edher about fearfully, to which she made 0
4ery little opposition. At last, by means of
a rope and pulley, the tiger wes raised by the
heek and let fall upon the buffalo's back.
This w s worse than pulling corks from soda
bottles With a co'k-sarew; some little claw
n and chewing was done from this post of
vantage but the enraPge'i hest soon shook
off his burd'x and butted her to death. The
transfer of the royal RuIsian .n the Mahara
jah's barge, and the subsequent fetes and ban
neucts at the palace were moren auspicious.
His Majesty drank the health of his royal
guest in a truly cosmopolitan way and the
reply of Alexis n as in the biief but sutheient
phrases with which his entertainers in this I
tountry are familiar.
