London Streets
The chief engineer of the London Gas
company has found that in some streets
the pavement of wood blocks laid on
concrete now forms a kind of arch capa
ble of supporting traffic while in many
places the earth has settled away to such
an extent that a man can crawl under
the pavement This is made a serious
matter by the fact that the space be
tween the soil and the concrete proves to
be filled by a mixture of gas from leaky
mains and aira mixture very liable to
reach explosive proportions to be ac
cidentally ignited when the street might
be blown into the airLondon Globe
To Adopt the American System
A London correspondent says the gov
ernment will probably grant a strong
petition recently presented for the ap
pointment of a commission to consider
the adoption of the American patent sys
tem in England The chief point at is
sue is whether a system of preliminary
examinations into the novelty of inven
tions should be introduced Legal and
scientific opinions are keenly and pretty
evenly divided on the subject
