FOE THE SCHOOLS
Delegate Rawlins last winter suggested
cested the opening of the TJinta and
Uncompahgre reservations to white set
tlement and the allotment of the lands
in severalty to the Indians and the
conveying of the residue to the terri
tory to be sold for the benefit of her
common free schools We had deter
mined to treat the subject then but in
the preSs of other important matters
this duty wan neglected and finally for
gotten Yesterday our good friend
Bishop Tanner referred to the subject
urging its advocacy strongly upon us
No more important matter lies nearer
the interests and the heart of Utah
than this In this Way if the genera
government can or will do it we will
acquire a million or so acres of the fin
est1 lands in the territory arable and
irrigable also If this deal can be
made let the territory sell to actual
aetflenS at the market price of the
Tunas ahdsix per cent interest giv
ing the settlers as long time on it as
they may desire This would furnish a
sum quite sufficient to support all of
our schools royally and relieve the
taxpayers of all the burdens of their
support
We trust that those und ersta11 d
in thesltuation of these lands and the
rfghlfof the United Slates to make
such disposition of them will set
about the task of looking up this mat
ter and memorialize the president the
secretary of the interior and congress
to thi effect If we have a man in the
territory able to devote his time and
efforts we liav not a doubt but it dan
ba accomplishedand that too without
much loss of time These lands in
excess of what will be necessary to
furnish homes on a liberal scale to the
Indians will if put to this use
give Utah an endowment for
her public free schools which
will b e second only to that of Texas
which is the richest endowment in the
kMowri world Of course the univer
31tnid all normal schools under state
direction should be beneficiaries upon
a perfectly fair pro rata i
NoW that sort of good thing does not
come to a people without labor hard
labor and a great deal of it We feel
sure that Mr Rawlins will do all in his
power to accomplish the task but he
will require aid from Utah herself
This aidmust take the form of mem
orials petitions and personal appeals
The sooner we set about the work the
onerwill it be accomplished Texas
entered the union upon a different
plan from any other state being an
independent government In her treaty
of annexation she reserved every acre
of hSr public domain Her congress
had life wisHom to set apart many
millions of acres for the sustenance of
herschools The state has wisely ap
piopriated the residue to the encourage
ment of railway improvement and up
to a ery few years sinde nbt a new line
was projected which didnot get alter
nate acres along the line and large
tracks any part of the domain where
they preferred to place their claims AI I
the close of the late war she had but
sixty miles of railway completed now
she has nearly ten thousand miles in
successful operation and is the fifth
railstin the broad union Her
university is very rich her normal
schools are well sustained and her I
pufiiic free schools the envy of the i
world We hope to see the day when
Utah will have a system of public free I
schools second only to the system in
Texas I
Tm LJhan Nation approves of our I
Ideas on the subject of the encourage
menli of newspapers as being home
manufactures It is a fact that the
apers are expected to push this ne w
idea of the encouragement of our
home mills merchants soap factories
and the like and to do the work to
tally without cost to the mills etc It
we went into a mill and asked them for
enough cloth to make a suit of clothes
simply because we were a home manufacturing
ufacturinjj enterprise in all probability
wed get kicked down stairs Yet they
do not hesitate to ask this service of
us It is however the right principle
and the papers do the work freely on
that account and not from love of the
managers of the mills Let the man
agers study this thing a bit and while
the papers are pulling them up see if
they cannot do something for the pa
pers in return
THE Salt Lake Herald defends its
position ably but still it even must see
that the stoppage if not lopping off of
t e normal attachment gives Provo
aspirations in this way a very great
impetus if even the suspension lasts
but one year The Herald should be
satisfied with the other great enter
prises she has concentrated there and
patriotism and general good feeling
for our neighbors should dictate the
policy of the Herald to the extent that
it could say Go in peace with your
normal school and school center both
The Herald should recall the fact that
in the normal department of the B Y
A the science of teaching alone is
taught not sectarianism
THE Splatterbloteh has been steadily I
predicting the downfall of THE Dis
PATCH notwithstanding its advertising I
and subscription business both have
increased from the very day we tool
charge The Splatterbloteh knows all
this well and it knows also that it lies
in its dirty throat when it says we are
waning There is no depths of infamy
which that paper will not gladly ex
plore to hand this paper the smallest
possible injury There is no shame
and less decency in it there is no tri
umph in beating it Its black charac
ter cannot take on another shade of
turpitude because it is full up
THE position of school center is a I
glittering crown for Provo to work for
It is within her reach Let her with I
strong hands reach out and grasp it
Why not It is not sufficient that the
Salt Lake papers oppose the ambition
That ought to be rather a spur to
greater efforts as it is a sure augury of
success if the requisite effort is made
If the Salt Lake papers dont look out
we will get the university here as well
as the capital in good time
