PEACEABLE SNAKE INDIANS
Young Chief Delivers an Eloquent Address
Replete With Love For the Whites
A delegation of Snake Indians visited
the red men of the Uroatilla reservation
recently When they started for home
Young Chief delivered the following
eloquent farewell address to his visitors
We part tonight Not as before for
once hate was between us Now there
is love Once war now peace Once
wo swung tomahawk and aimed the
deadly rifle at each others hearts Now
the pipe of peace we smoke to show that
the past is passed and buried In other
ways it is different There was a time
when some of us lay in ambush against
the whites But we have all put aside
the implements of war and cultivate the
arts of peace Our fathers swore eter
nal vengeance on the palefaces This
was because of the tradition handed us
by them of an invasion of trappers and
traders who valued not the Indians life
They went to the sea and found their
friends at Astoria by the great water
and left sesue to mourn their Indian
dead But fits live side by side with
him now and from the rising to the
setting sun we know no foe for whom
we would put on the warpaint and
ride forth to return with scalps hang
ing at our belts Our ponies no more
carry us to bloody attack We own the
great father at Washington as our great i
chief Him we obey The past is for
gotten Major Jim go to your people
and say Young Chief sends them peace
and good will Portland Oregonian

SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE

the Electrician Nikola Tesla
Mr T C Martin editor of The Elec
trical Engineer writing on the work of
the ServianAmerican electrician Nik
ola Tesla says
Mr Tesla has advanced the opinion
and sustained it by brilliant experi
ments of startling beauty and grandeur
that light and heat are produced by
electrostatic forces acting between
charged molecules or atoms Perfect
ing a generator that would give him
currents of several thousand alterna
tions per second and inventing his dis
ruptive discharge coil he has created
electrostatic conditions that have al
ready modified not a few of the accepted
notions about electricity
It has been supposed that ordinary
currents of 1000 or 2000 volts poten
tial would surely kill but Mr Tesla
has been seen receiving through his
hands currents at a potential of more
than 200000 volts vibrating a million
times per second and manifesting them
selves in dazzling streams of light This
is not a mere tour do force but illus
trates the principle that while currents
of lower frequency destroy life these
are harmless After such a striking
test which by the way no one has
displayed a hurried inclination to re
peat Mr Teslas body and clothing
have continued for some time to emit
fine glimmers or halos of splintered
light In fact an actual flame is pro
duced by this agitation of electrostat
ically charged molecules and the curi
ous spectacle can be seen of puissant
white ethereal flames that do not con
sume anything bursting from the ends
of an induction coil as though it were
the bush on holy ground
With such vibrations as can be main
tained by a potential of 3000 000 volts
Mr Tesla expects some day to envelop
himself in a complete sheet of lambent
fire that will leave him quite uninjur
ed Such currents as he now uses would
he says keep a naked man warm at the
north pole and their use in therapeutics
is but one of the practical possibilities
that has been taken upCentury
