TO FIGHT THE FRUIT PEsTS
We congratulate the fruit growers
upon the appointment of BiShOP Wride
to the position of fruit inspector for
Provo He is certainly the right man
in the right place exactly We would
have our citizens awake to the vast
importance of thoroughly spraying the
trees during the season so that there
may be made a clean sweep of the
pestiferous insects which work so much
mischief to the fruit of Utah If the
court is i strictly obeyed in this matter
and the work is thoroughly done this
I
Beasons fruit will make a great ad
vance in both quality and amount and
in two years the fruit pest will have
become a thing of the past Here
there is little or uo care taken as to
the insects In other fruit countries
every care is taken to rid the orchards
of insects and to keep them clean A
law should be passed making it crim
inal to neglect the work of destroying
insects
i
The laws of Colorado are very strict I
as to the importation of diseased trees
or vines into that state and are strictly
enforced BUG they are no less severe
about importation of diseased trees
than they are as to dealing with di
seased trees in the orchards So it
should be here Just a little attention
to this matter would soon rid the entire
territory and give us good wholesome
fruit instead of the imperfect and
faulty trash we now have
This is a very important matter to
the people and we hope to see every
farmer or fruit grower second our good
bishop in his efforts to exterminate the
pests we now have and to keep them
out forever It can be so quickly so
easily and so cheaply done that every
man should go at it at once and stick
at it unil our orchards vineyards and
gardens are entirely freed from it
There is a fortune for every fruit
grower In Utah it the county commis
sioners plan is per v followed
Another thing on
ing in importance
ing Every patti
wood should be ca Jy
scarcely r trees too much
prune y
The time to pruJ iB when your knife
is sharp say the best and most ex
perienced fruit growers Let every
man in Utah demand a thorough ap
plication of uis principle and soon
Utah will be 3 as noted for the ex
cellence of Ler ruits as she is for the
value of hero ijjfactured articles
A Hn EXHIBITION

suggestion
Let it be only of Utah county pro

artistically and then invite all Utah

see just why we claim for Utah county
the crown for Utah territorial produc

here to see what we have already done
let us show them what we may do in
the future if our energies and possi
bilities are wisely used Not a clear
sichted man of business but would
wonder that no practical use has as
yet been made of the greatest natural
waterpower in the entire west Here
are centered more natural resources
than can be found at any other point I
in the territory Let UB awake to the
reat riches which are rusting away
here yielding nothing when if used
they would be enriching our beautiful
city with a rapidity perfectly bewilder
ing We offer the suggestion to our peo
I ple for what it is worth and trust they
will look well at it ere they throw it
aside as ot nothing worth THE Dis
