SHE CAN SEE NO BEAUTY IN THEM
A California Womans Judgment Upon the
New York Women of Fashion
The horse show brings forcibly home
to us an unpleasant truthnorth of
Mason and Dixons line we have not de
veloped an aristocratic type Southern
women by virtue of their descent from
English ancestors of birth and breeding
added to generations of luxury are in
dubitably aristocratic in outline and
bearing but the New York woman of
fashion is merely swagger a combina
tion produced by an expensive dress
maker and her own unswerving deter
mination to acquire an air She is
swagger withont being high bred self
conscious where she would be haughty
and her repose is mere lounging
I have studied this type for several
years and last night I was struck anew
with two of its fatal deficiencies
lack of nose and of cheek modeling It
is not too much to say that in all that
tier of boxes there was not one good
nose Only one girl had a nose of size
and hers was a proboscis She could
have pplied three of her meager sis
ters The others without exception had I
little pugs or an irregular piece of flesh
and cartilage that cannot be classed
One Japanese looking little beauty
had a queer peaked affair that seemed
to point derisively at her bang Anoth
er woman of middle age who is never
spoken of except as one of the most
Beautiful and distinguished looking wo
men of America has a minute appli
cation so unfortunately constructed as to
give her the effect of one whose fato it
is to stand constantly on the edge of a
sewer This woman is absolutely with
out beauty Her face is large and com
mon and colorless her languid eyes
with a wicked sparkle are as nearly
expressionless as eyes can be got She
is merely an astonishing newspaper pro
duction
One of the women mot frequently
extolled for beauty has the face of the
Parisian cocotte One can see it by the
dozen on a spring afternoon driving to
the Bois its other extremities banked
in flowers She is tall and has a charm
ing grace and two or three generations
have done much for her but the cocotte
suggestion is paramount Last night
she sat with her legs frankly crossed a
model of elegance the gaping throng
Another is as good a type of tho
French soubrette as you will ever see in
a Parisian theatera small dark
bright wicked little face its owner as
smart as a great milliner oould make
her Another beauty has merely a
bright good attractive face Not a line
there conforms to any standard Anoth
er has developed a Burgundy complex
ion and large knobs on her oheek bones
This is merely study and a truth
ful one I see no reason why the truth
should not be written about this much
discussed type for once The newspa
pers are responsible for the false im
pression regarding the fashionable wo
men of Now York To describe a beauty
makesinteresting reading But tho so
cial phase of any country is part of its
history and current history should be
treated with the same impartiality as
the more easily focused past As a mat
ter of bare fact there is hardly a beau
tiful or a high bred woman in New
York society hardly one that in profile
or modeling of cheek and chin or in
roposo and dignity of bearing suggests
three generations behind her And it is
a great pity one to be regretted by any
good < American for the New York wo
man of fashion is today accepted abroad
as the flower of American civilization
The blue blooded southern woman is
Beautiful the cosmopolitan California
woman is beautiful but the New York
woman of fashion without her bright
complexion and hair her admirable
grooming her superb gowns and ao
quired air could only be described
by the most damning of adjectives
commonplaceGertrude Atherton in
New York Sun
Dress Evolution
Persons who have been expecting
dress reform somewhat as they are ex
p pecting the millenniumrolling in on
a gold chariot in a cloud of fire or
something equally startlingwill be
surprised some day to be told that it
dress reform not the millenniumis
here Tho number of women who wear
different clothes from those they were
brought up to consider the proper and
suitable womens wear would amaze if
it could be accurately stated Union un
derwear and hygienic waists with no
corsets these are in such common use
as to be no longer in any way unusuaL
The bicycle has pushed matters a little
further In their attempts to design a
costume for this exercise many women
have worked out their own salvation in
a walking dress as welL Scores of bi
cycling women shop travel and walk
in their wheel toilets and nobody sus

Justifiable Sarcasm
It is claimed you know that wom
en are such emotional creatures it
will not do to intrust them with the
ballot Have you ever noticed how calm
and thoughtful and deliberate a crowd
of men were at an election celebration
Have you observed what strength of in
tellect what capacity for government
they showed as they cavorted around
the burning pile and added all the head
covering they possessed to the combus
tible material Probably you have been
there yourself and maybe this argu
ment may have occurred to youthat
man alone should be intrusted with the
ballot he is so much more calm and
unemotional than woman Kansas

In the memorial building of the Young
Women s Christian association Brook

last season It has been constructed to
meet the needs of youngwomen who
can give only the evening hours to ath

sum In addition to the gynnasium
hall with its visitors gallery and ele

bathrooms and needle baths For the
modest sum of 5 cents any woman
whether a member or not of the gymna

the gym comprises three gradescalis

women well known in Brooklyn society
who are generous supporters of the as

Mrs Clark Burnham Mrs G H Pren

One of the prettiest of gymnastic es

the line of girls moves in an elaborate
arabesque or scroll winding around in
concentric circles and then unwinding
to form a long line moving down the
length of the room in skillfully plan
ned curves The music grows slower
and slower until the line finally comes to
a standstill when the girls take their

Training Women Fur Business
A business womans college has been
just opened in London or to describe
the excellent institutions aims more
exactly a school for the business train
ing of women has been established The
school is mainly designed to train wo
men for clerkships and secretaryships
They are taught shorthand typewrit
ing accounts and banking in a course
extending over six ninths The oppor
tunities are offered gentlewomen who
suddenly thrown by financial mishap on
their own resources can catch up a pro
fession by which to support themselves
Besides this the school accepts as pupils
women who wish to learn how to keep
their own books and personally manage
their own independent fortunes Then
too women apply who have a chance
for a government position and must be
well up in mathematics and get through
special examinations From its gradu
ating classes the school supplies secre
taries to busy philanthropical ladies
who need help in their work in the form
of a capable head for figures and a neat
hand at penmanshipLondon Letter
Women In the Colleges
Colleges for women were nqver o
full as now Smith leads with a round
800 and Wellesley follows with score
or so less Mount Holyoke has the lar
gest class ever gathered in her walls
and overflows into the village for lack
of dormitoryspace while every facility
of Vassar is taxed to the utmost At
Smith a new course in English is of
fered to the juniors by Professor Mary I
A Jordan Mountain day was cele
brated by long drives and mountain
climbs and the roads in the vicinity
were filled with student pedestrians
Bryn Mawr notes a gain of 40 in its list
of students Miss Thomas formerly dean
of the faculty has assumed her position
as president in place of Dr Rhoades
whose resignation on account of ill
health has been tl opted reluctantly
The Mount Holyoke College Botanical
garden has been an unusual sucCess this
season and classes under Professor
Hooker have made constant use of its
treasures Home Journal
Sex Disqualified Her
The Cook county Ills board of re

Kane could not be printed as a candi
date for probate judge The petition on
which Miss Kane made her application
was signed by 3175 voters of the Re
publican Democratic Peoples and So

practicing attorney for years The deci
sion was broadly that the sex of the
nominee disqualified her Judge Scales
said in reference to the action of the
board that women were not yet enti

a woman was not qualified to hold the
position of probate judge
Poorly Shod
A businessman basin his employ one
of those quick witted sons of Erin who
are rarely if ever at a loss for a bright
rejoinder
One day when the streets were very
slippery with ice a truckman tried to
get up to the gentlemans door with a
heavy load Tho horses having no corks
on their shoes struggled and slipped
about in a desperate way without mak
ing any real progress
The good humored Irishman went
out and endeavored to assist the truck
man At last when seemed as if their
united efforts were all in vain Pat
looked up at the man and said with a
