An enthusiastic and well attended meeting wns hold at Giirtl's ball In Lohl last Wednesday evening. Tho mooting was addressed by Hon. B. II. Roberts, Democratic candldato for Congress, and Hon. II. Roberts will bo our next Congressman. Ho referred to the Democratic plat form as a glorious exposition of poli tical principles and to the Republican platform ns an effort only entitled by courtesy to tho name of platform. Ho called to mind the glaring InconsUtcu clcs of tho Republican Stato platform, In which (list occurs an endorsement of McKluloy, tho pronounced enemy of silver, and second a counter declar ation In favor of bltnemllsm. Mr. Harris s. illles In connection with this manifest and glaring contradiction were received with thunders of ap plnusc. Aflcr a short refeience to the war isuo Mr. Harris retired with tho cheers of the audience. The next speaker introduced by Chairman Davis wns HON. 11. II. llOIIEHTS. Mr. Roberts commenced Lis address with a leferenee to the Statu platform of the Massachusetts Democrats and rend tho portion reuowing allegiance to the Chicago platform and demanding tho restoration of hlmetnlism at the ratio of 10 to 1. Mr. Roberts declared tho sliver question tho paramount issue In 1003, us it will bo In 11)00. He stated that the llnaiiei.il question and Its proper solution Involves tho propotty of tho pcoplo, and made an able com p.nlson of tho conditions prior to 1873, the date of silver's demonetization, nnd tho present. Ho illustrated tho effect of an increased or diminished supply of money and compared tho price of whoat nnd other principal commodi ties will) sllvor, showing how closely thoy adhered to each other, thus show ing the dependence of all industries upon tho proper settlement of tho bt motallc question. Mr. Roberts with tlno sarcasm paid his respects to tho so-called Wolcott ulmotnllc commission and Its fore-ordained failure. Ho then read the financial plank of eaoh Na tional platform, to show tho inconsis tency of Republicans claiming to bo a blmotallo party. Mr. RoborU referred to tho woman suffrage contest In tho ConsUtutlonul convention and stated that the question had been fought out and settled and was no nioro an Jusuo. Ho closed by tho declaration that ho hlimolf was not an issue In this cam paign, repeating In effect tho close of his Spanish Fork address of Tuesday. Secretary Jos. M. Cohen. Treasurer Win. II Dalo. Sergeant-nl-arms W. E. D. Barnctt. Assistant sergeant-iit-anns Thos. Fowler. POLITICAL ST11AWS. Tho Provo Republicans have nomi nated S. K. King for precinct Justice, and Frank Tucker for constable. Nearly a dozen of the faithful attended tho "mass-mooting" lust Tuusday i evening. Tho Enquirer says tho people will "fined," oto., In regard to the Republi can Legislative ticket. It would bo moro nearly correct to say that they should ''bo fined" for voting that ticket. ' i Some papers havo a groat deal to siy concerning men who are recent comers to tho State and are nominated for olllco because In a short time they have tho pcoplo's conlidenco. Theso men are at least as worthy of suppoit us those, who by tih-kery and manipula tion of a ring, havo always held or sought office but never gained the con lidenco of the people. Lohl Banner. Prof. John P. Meaklu will rcclto nt Sprlngvlllo next Friday evening, at Spanish Fork Snturduy afternoon and at Provo Saturday evening. Ho will bo assisted by tho lessor lights of tho combination, John Houry Smith and Alma Eldrcdgc. Tho local goldbug organ says: "It seems to be a mistake that Is becoming gonerally recognized to elect mon to office who havo made a failure of life In n private way. If ihey are' not a success in tho private- affairs of life, the chances are that they will be Just as great a failure In the public offices. The Republicans have this year got up a lot of candidates wljo are successful citizens, nnd It goes without saying that they will bo successful officers." Our only response neal be, "ditto," from a Democratic standpoint. But ns most of our candidates are proved and theirs unproved, wo certainly have tho best of tho aigumeut. E. B. K. Ferguson, prominent Dem ocratic politician of Lnko Shoro, was doing busluess In Provo Thuisduy. A. O. Smoot nnd S. A. King nttended tho meeting of the State Democratic committee In Salt Lako Thursday evening. John E. Booth went to Salt Lake jostorduy, on political and lej;al busi ness. Tho looil g. o. p. organ says that Moses Thatcher Is In ttiollold and that at least ouo ot tho local Democratic LegUlatlvo candidates is pledgod to his suoport. We deny that report and challnngo tho proof. Our candidates aro not pledged, nnd will not ho pledged, other than to support a ster ling Democrat for Unltod States Sena, tor. Iu this connection we will say and nlso will challongo contradiction that tho local Republican Legislative candidates aro already pledget) to John Deary Smith. The Enquirer wants to havo "profes sional office-seekers" wcoded out of Utah politic?. 'Wonder what tho En quirer will dp with Its boaid of direc Tho Trlbuno snys that In Utan, ns nobody Is lighting silver, let the mat ter rest. If tho Republicans of D'ah by their endorsement of President Mc Kinlcy and his policies nro not lighting Silver, In tho uitmo of common sense, what aro they iigntlng. ..
