The Alters o* Eli Thayer.?-The coursc of the Argu*, recently, put? us in mind of some ferocious animal, (in fact it reminds of that '"hun dred eyed" monster?its illustrious name sake?) which is constantly casting all its eyes about in search of prey. Qaving fora while fastened its fan its and tushes in EJihu Burritt, it suddenly, in the twinkling of one of its eyes, withdraws itself licks its lips ami sets ofT full chase after Eli Thayer, down at Guyandotte. Coming up with Kli, it lays hold of him, drays him hack to its lair, here in Main street, and at its leisure commence2 the bloody work of endeavoring to eat him up by inches. It is not with any hope of abating the ferocity of the Cerberus propen sities of the Aryvt that we resume further con sideration of Mr. Thayer's projected immigra tion. The article of the Ar<jus is but a piece of frothy captandom?showing a great deal of virulence towards Mr. Thayer and a great deal of humbug irrelevancy concerning matters in our State. The article, we arc sorry to say it, does not rise to the dignity of criticism, and we shall not therefore attempt it, but merely pass on to show what a need there is for the proposed influx. Some time ago, we had put into our hands a report of one of the Sunday School celebrations of our State, a report of which wo to-day avail ourselves, as tending to show what great need , there was for a renovation of the dilapidated j condition of some of our interior counties. The report was sent abroad as an appeal for relief, ] and we publish it verbatim as it came to us: j "Si:nimv-Sciiooi.s in Vikoivia.?At the Sun day-School Convention, which was held in Lynchburg, Va., in the month of June, a com mittee of twelve clergyman and laymen, repre senting all the six evangelical denominations in j the town, was appointed to prepare an address in behalf of the great cause of Christian educa tion in South-Western Virginia. It has been published, and presents some suggestive statis tics. 'According to the census of 1S-jO the pres- ! ent entire white population of tiie State is about 971,770. Of the*c there are, over 20 years of j age, about 452,832; of whom there are who can- j not read about 86,180. That is nearly one in five of all the grown whites of the State.* "Where will these adults learn to read, if not in the Sunday-School ? They are too old, or too poor, or too proud to attend an}' other. But again, there are this year in Virginia, of young persons between 5 and 20 years of age, al?out j 379,845; of whom there are at school or college j only about 111,327; leaving as attending no ji school of any kind, 268,416; that is, for every J < young person in the State between 5 and 20 < years of age receiving any instruction, there are j j two others who receive none! In other words I two-thirds of that portion of our population I who are to become citizens within the next lif- j teen yearn, arc, in these most precious years of i their history, going totally untaught i "To the questions, What can be done to jc change this sad prospect? How is light to be j * poured upon the darkness which is thus settling ' t all around us? How are the blessings of gene- ' 1 ral. and especially of Christian instruction, to a 1m? here diffused ? the Report answers as follows: i i ? The best hope, we have no hesitation in an- 'jc swerinjr, is in that admirable institution of our 1 age, which is so peculiarly conformed to the f spirit of Christianity and to the genius of our jc country, the Sunday School. This agency, ; I whether conducted on individual responsibility, >t or under denominational direction, we cordially ! r recommend as eminently beneficial in tendency, i But there is one great Sunday School organiza- ? t tion of which we would especially speak as pe- . | culiarly adapted to the wants of the land?the j American Sunday School I niori. This is a 11 great national association of good men, belong- t ing to the leading evangelical denominations of ? t the country,' etc. "The address then explains the Missionary en- j I terprise of this Society, for the organization of : schools in destitute places. 'Thus the best ap- j< pliances of a neighborhood are set in action j i toward the cultivation of religion there, and i tnak.fng the wilderness indeed blossom as the j! rose/ |' "The field immediately under consideration comprises twenty-six counties. Apian is pro posed for its immediate cultivation thoroughly and systematically; and an earnest apneal for action and liberal contribution concludes the ad dress. * 'These facts, we :yiy, arc startling. One in five of the grown white persons of the Old Do minion unable to read! Two thirds of those who are to become citizens in the next fifteen years, going wholly untaught! Can any oth er State furnish such statistic-? We fear the answer. Is it not lime to apply the remedy V" The above certainly is suliicicnt to lay before any candid mind to convince them of the urgent necessity for some waking up in the "South Western" portion of the State, but it seems ; from the following advertisement, which was j published in the Country Gentleman, that there : are other portiods of the State, which need some recuperative energy. Here it is: "Viur.isiA Lanx?.?I have for sale 1,121 acres Wood Land. It i- well watered, and has plenty of Meadow Land on it The railroad and plank road both pass through it; the distance from Fredericksburg is 18 miles, and the same from Orange Court IIoum?. "Distance from , Fredericksburg eighteen miles!" And where ! is Fredericksburg? We find it to h<5 a town j of 6,000 inhabitants, at tho head of navigation, | and below the falls of the Biver ltappahannotk, 110 miles from Chesapeake Bnv, and 60 miles north of Richmond. If our historical read ing arc correct, this town was the seat of gnat wealth and refinement in tho olden time; the heart of a country peopled by the aristocracy of the land, and near where "Mary, the mother of Washington," lies entombed. A few mites below, in Westmoreland, Washington himself ! was born. So were the four brothci s Lee (Rich ard Henry, a signer of the Declaration of Inde pendence, and Thomas, Francis and Arthur),* ! Gen. Henry Lee, James Monroe, and Judg? Bushrod Washington. A renowned country was that lying along the Rappahannock, in those days, and our 1,131 acres o! woodland, which can be bought for $?> an acre, is only j eighteen miles from iU commercial center, ami on both a railroad and a plank road. 1 his tract, like many more of the same kind, was once, probably, the family scat of soul*..lesccndfiit of the Cavaliers, Abounding In wealth, tint run out, thrown to commons, and long apt. destrte.U-r some fresher and more productive sud. further south or west Poor ami exhausted as the land round about it is, the ltapahanock is a large navigable stream for coasting vessels, with lino fisheries ? anil delicious climate, yielding all the fruits and vegetables of the latitude of 38 I -3 drg north; a grand water-power above the tide; and "the soil round and about it. poor and worn as it is, is far superior ill its natural qualities to V the most populous and highly cultivated parts of ; either Khode Island or Massachusetts, from which I numbers ol bard/ farmers are anually emigra ting a thousand miles to the Free States west In I search of new homes. Having thus passed through the Various ope rations or heating, melting, squeezing, rolling, cutting, re heating, rolling, clipping, annealing, cutting again, annealing, weighing and packing, it seems hard to realize the fact, that we now stand hv a keg of nails, which, but a few hours aco. was nothing more than a chunk of samlj looking pig iron nnd a little pile of stone coal. niFFEKEXT KISD3 OF KAILS MAOE. The nails made bv the Belmont Company are disposed of ju..t as fast as they can be turned out. Along the Ohio river, they And a market in every town and city, from Wheeling to Cairo; then down the Mississippi to many distributing points as far as Now Orleans, they eventually lind their way to every Southern State. Orders are, also, very frequently filled for the East, and occasion ally as fur, in that direction, as I>altirn< re. Having thus completed what is intended to l>e a detailed description of one of the most perfect nail factories in the country, I feel as though Davy Crocket's idea of the woolen factory he found in the North, is calculated to convey a more perfect conception of its perfection than all I have said. Davy, having examined, vary attentively, the compound complicated machin ery of one of these celebrated Northern estab lishments and watched with deep interest the various processes through which the :rool was made to pass, from the time it entered the pick er until it came out cloth, attempted, on his re turn home, to give his "feller citizens" a descrip tion of it, but before he had proceeded far, .1 want of technical term* overtook him, and find ing himself thus hedged in from that quarter, he broke out in another direction, as follows:? "Well, now, feller citizens, it are no use to be goin* so fur around a thing in order to git at it; so to cut the matter short, it looks jist like a place what a man mout walk in at one end with a bundle of wool under his arm, and cum out at tother with a new scot ov close on his back." A. SUMMARY. One day last week Michael Cromer, of Mer-? cersburg, Franklin county Pa., cut in ten con secutive hours ten acres of wheat, In thoroughly workmanlike manner. It turned two hundred and fifty-two shocks, or three thousandan&ticen iy-four sheaves; being nearly three hundred and three par hour, and over five per minute during the whole time of cuting. This is, perhaps, the most extraordinary cradling ever done in this country, fn amount it is considerably beyond the average of Heaping machines. At the close of the performance, Mr. Cromer did not appear to be much fatigued, and expressed his ability ind readiness to undertake the cuting of an ldjoining lot of seven acres the following day. Tjie London Artisan, recently described a iood and armor for enabling a person to go into 1 vat filled with noxious gas, or into the hold of m infected vessel, down into wells containing "oul air, ?fcc. The device consists of an India rubber hood, furnished with glass eyes, a mouth piece, valve chamber, inhaling and exhaling cubes, where the wearer is.out off* from 'he gas ?s and foul air which surround him, and at the <atne time breathes fresh air through the tube carried to the external atmosphere. The device s thought to be of great practical utility. The Eastern papers are charged full with re ports of college commencements, and a consid erable portion of the space thus occupied is de voted to the "poetry" of the students, which is about the paltriest and most unmitigated twad dle that wc have ever had the misfortune to meet in print. It docs not rise in conception or execution above the general average of schoolboy effusions. The press by publishing these specimen efiort3 is preparing the way for 1 deluge of trash in the shape of rhymes that will be visited upon it, and for which it will be responsible. The trial of Miss Smith cost the defence about ?,4000. A greater sum than was sub scribe! for the purpose by a few of the lead ing Glasgow merchants. One old batch tdor put down ?1,000 as his own share. The Dean of Faculty's fee was ?250, and a "refresher" of ?70 every morning of the trial. Mr. \oung, who was associated with the Dean in the de fence, received ?400 altogether. It has been urged in several quarters, that the British Colonies should have representatives in the House of Commons, with authority to vote on colonial questions only. A writer in Blackwood's Magazine advocates the measure with much zeal. He says that the voice of the Colonies should be heard, and their influence felt in the National Assembly, whenever mat ters affecting the whole British Empire r.re un der consideration. It is proposed by the employees of tl- Balti more and Ohio Railroad, to have establi ' i d by law, a Board of Examiners, for the exam'nation of the qualification of persons wishing to be Locomotive Engineers, and for granting licen ses?none to be employed who are not licensed. A friend suggests that Cape May is not good for female health. Going down there reccntlv, on the passage he [was introduced to a lady, neat, notable and nineteen?plump as a part ridge: a few days after this he saw her bathing, and the natant naiad was nauseating)? narrow. Tiie prospectus of a pro-s'avery paper to be published in Manchester, England, is announ ced. It Is to represent the cotton interest, and will discuss the nature and government of the negro, without being influenced by "tho abstract theories of Exeter Hall, on the one hand, or by the brutal ideas of the Cuban planters, on the other."
