The 'Squire being libera! in his political views reads both know nothing and democratic news papers. After finishing the perusal of the two newspapers one day, lie had occasion to absent himself from the office. Folding the newspa pers up neatly he left them, placing the demo cratic sheet underneath the other. When the Squire returned, he found the top sheet removed to the desk and the democratic sheet missing. Happening to look out just then he was amazed to see his visitor, the raven, tearing the spirit of democracy into little bits and stuffing it through the Crevices of the adjoining floor. The 'Squire told the story to several of his acquaintances and atiioug them the owner of the raven. From that time the Squire never saw his dark plumed visitor?he was no where to be found, and a fearful mystery surrounded the aiiitir until it occurred to the observing magistrate that the oner of the bird was a violent democrat. The Squire is unable to rid himself of the impression thai his visitor has proved a martyr to the na tive American cause and has been assassinated. Fatal liailrothl Accidcnt.?An accident oc curred last Sunday on the Marietta & Cincinna ti railroad, near Marietta, which resulted in the death of James Chamherlin, of Hat-man. A freight train was coming down a W, and young Cliainberlin was seated on the top of one of the hajr^age cars. As the train moved backward over one of the legs of the \V, this baggage car was thrown off" the track down the hill. It is supposed Chambvriin was thrown some distance as the car tilted over, and either killed by the fall, or so stunned as to be senseless; and the car rolled down upon him, crushing him into the earth, and dreadfully mangling his body. Jlunamnj Ifegroet.?On Wednesday night last, three runaway negroes were arrested on the Pennsylvania line in Monongalia county, and lodged in the Morgontown jail. They wer? the property of a man by the name of Pendle- j t >:i, of Berkely Go., Va., but they ran away from a faruj in Allegheny Co., Md. These ne groes hail been on the National Road near Smith field, I'a., but when arrested were on the Bran* donvillo and Morgantown turnpike, en route for M"rgantown, instead of "making tracks" for a Vreo State. They uiado no resistance to their capture, being nearly exhausted from starva tion. Hurglarict.?0 hear of quite a number of p' tty burglaries lately, in different sections of the city, chiefly "draws" on the culinary de partments of private residences. There are a ?lumber of energetic gentlemen in this city, who iite entirely upon the practice of tho liberal profession of plundering, and too much caution cannot be exercised in (irmly securing doors and windows. *' foundling.?A little waif upon the ocean ?( life, in the shape of an infant child was found "rapped up in some old clothes near tho resi ilnce of Mr. Grcathouse, a short distance from M "inUsville, on last Monday night The pub ho '<nr>v as little how it came thero as the child 'tself, though strong suspicions are entertained as to iu Paternity. Correspondence of the Intelligencer. TH12 FIRE AT BETHANY. Bkthasv Colleok, Dep. 10, 1857. lfc*&rt. Editors: There is nothing left this morning but a few piles of charred brick, to : mark the spot where once stood the proud : structure of Bethany College. The fair child i that was warmed into existence and nurtured by the untiring labors of our venerable presi dent, has passed away like a drcain, and now . lietjin unsightly mass of smouldering ruins. This morning about half past one o'clock, fire was discovered in the Laboratory of Dr. Itich- | ardson, in the north western portion of the building, and so quickly did it communicate to i the other departments, that in less than fifteen ? minutes after it was first discovered, the entire college building was wrapped in Dames. The Chemical and Philsophical Apparatuses, i the College and the four Society Libraries were ? totally consumed. This sad occurrence has cast a gloom over our village that will not be dissi- I paled until another College edifice rises above i the ashes of our lately dearly beloved institu- ' tion. The effect upon the students, whose sad faces were seen grouped around the burning pile, is "melius sen tire qitum wire." The Faculty, I believe, have not concluded upon what course they will pursue, as yet, nor will they, I pre sutnc, until a meeting of the Board of Trustees is called. Have not learned what the probable loss will be, but suppose thirty-five or forty thousand dollars, at least. The fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. I understand the in surance had expired and had not been renewed. Yours, &c., ClIALYBS. ??? The Hirer was comming up rapidly yester dry. The weather was cloudy with indications of rain. The Altaniont left last evening for Cincinnati with a moderate trip. She took a large quantity of nailsatBenwood. The Courier, from Wheeling, had arrived nt Cincinnati, with a slim trip, nnd reports dull ] times at stations along the river. On Tuesday the Emma Dean sunk a flat-boat loaded with coal, a short distance up the Ken tucky. The Tennessee and Cumberland rivers are re ported rising fast, and it is cxpectcd the banks of these streams will be overflowed. The late 1 rains have been heavy along both rivers. At lust accounts the Philadelphia was aground at Devil's Island, and the ferry boat alongside i taking off her freight. On Monday last a difilculty took place on the steamer Jennie Whipple, lying at the St Louis levee between the officers of said steamer and several hack and cab men because the former i refused the latter the privilege of boarding the i steamer for passengers and baggage. The diffi culty at one time assumed appearance of a riot and several arrests were made. Mr. Charles Seeds, pilot of the steamer Mel notte, who was arrested some days since on the ? authority of a telegraphic despatch, on a charge of having attempted to poison his family at New port, Ky., was discharged Tuesday night, no further intelligence being received, although the parties sending the despatch have been telegraphed four times. Mr. Seeds, on his libera, tiun, immediately proceeded to Newport to in vestigate the affair. Cadiz, Ohio, July 7th, 1857. Mr. T. B. Logan & Co., Proprietors. Also by E. Bockini* and Beed & Kraft. It is a most undoubted fact that Dr. Sanford's Invigorator, or Liver Remedy, is one of the greatest discoveries made in medicine the past century. It has been a study of the Dr. during twenty years' practice to find what particular organ, when diseased, caused the greatest num ber of ills or pains, and his conclusion is, that the liver is the greatest regulator of the system and the mostliable to disease, while if kept free from disease is preventive of Dyspepsia, Jaun dice, general debility, 4c., while last but far from least wo mention consumption; for our ex perience is that more cases of consumption occur from diseased liver than from all other causes put together. Taking this to be a correct hypothesis, we have but to find a remedy with which to correct the liver, and we have r cure of nearly all the diseases wo arc subject to by simply using a preventive. That the Ir.rigorntor is such a remedy, is beyond doubt to all who try it, for its virtues aro such that for all complaints aris ing from liver derangements, jt is on unfailing remedy, while as a family medicine, for all dis eases of the stomach or bowels, which.are caus ed in a greater or less degree by liver derange ment, it is the safest, surest and most efficacious remedv known.?Prill. WASHINGTON* NEWS. Dec. 11.?Senator Bigler in order to correct a misrepresentation, states in conversations which have been had on tho subject, that the meeting to which he alluded in his speech on Wednes day, as having taken place in Mr. Douglas' room last year to consult on the Toombs' Kansas bill, was unofficial and rather a private meeting of the committee on Territories and one to which the other Senators had been invited. The death of Hon. Andrew P.Butler, of S 0 will be announced in the Senate on^Mondav ac cording to the present understanding auionethe Senator#, and the death of- Hon. James Bell, of N. II., on Tuesday. At a caucus of Democratic Members of the Senate, which was held to-day, the Standing Committee were agreed upon. Mr. Mason wjfi continue as Chairman of Committc on Foreign relations; Mr. Douglas of Committee on Terri tones; Mr. Hunter of Committee on Finance: Mr. Stuart of Committee on Public Lands; Mr. Brown of Committee of District of Columbia; Mr. Clay to he Chairman of Committee 011 Com merce, \ ice Dodge; Mr. Bayard of Committee on Judiciary, Vice Butler, and Mr. Yulee of Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads, Vice Rusk. An effort was made at the caucus to elect new officers of the Senate, but the proposition was postponed. The nomination of a public printer will comc up in a caucus to be held 011 Monday next; much interest is manifested con cerning their action on this subject. Dispatches from Coh Johnson were received at the War Department to-day, dated South Pass, Oct. 18th They include several letters from Col. Alexander, the present Commanding officer of the- main body of the armv in Utah, lie, It appears, questions, by the hesitation with which ho assumes them, his right to exercise fully all the duties of Commander, but Johnson thinks his authority to exercise them without restriction is clearly granted. Johnson s ys Alexander, in pursuance of the hitter's design, had advanced to Hams Fork of Grun River, thirty-live miles above the crossing, and there directed the movements to Le made by his own immediate commahd, and the troops in his rear to form a junction, which, from an crronous supposition, would be wholly impracticable. Johnson continues: Col. Smith is at this camp with fifty men, his regiment. I overtook him 011 the 10th, about twenty miles east of this atid have added my escort, fifteen dismissed dragoons, to his force. Lieut. Smith, in command of a squadron of dragoons and fifty of the 10th In fantry, a force of about 200 men, may be ex pected here in three or f..i:i days. He is aware of the necessity of promptness and I am sure will lose no time. Col. Johnson noticcs Muc graw's assistance and enters into minute details of the supply trains which are expccled and of the stale of the weather, for the reason that the order transmitted to Alexander may not have been fully comprehended. Col. Johnson says in conclusion, I will how ever mention, that uuless a large forcc is sent here from natives of the country, a protracted war on tho part of the Mormons js inevitable. 'I he great distance from our source of supply makes it impossible to operate with a small force, it in fact requires the employment of such force to guard the numerous trains of the supplies, leaving but a small supply if any, for offensive operations. The movement of troops from California and Oregon nod by this route would terminate the war with the Mormons speedily and more economically than if attempted by insufficient means. In live or six days I think we will have all tho force available here for such forward movements, by that time all the trains will be up, they should be here sooner. In twelve days from this time I expect to join ('?1- Alexander at or near Fontenelle Creek. The General may be assured that no retrograde movement will be made by this force. 1 his document bears tho endorsement of Lieut Gen. Scott, cordially approving Col. John son's conduct as to the expedition from the Pa cific, lie, however, concludes the Col. is not aware of the difficulties which would attend it. 1 his part of the dispatch he now concurs in as it is the opinion of the Commander in chief, that Johnson can be reinforced earlier and far more effectually from this side. The amount of treasury subject to draft is less than $(>,000,000. Receipts for the week ending 7th, $5,60,000. Wood?Dear Sir: I have heard much said of the wouderful effects of your Hair Restorative, butha\!ng been so often cheated by quackery and quack nostrum*, hair dyes, Ac., 1 was disposed to place your Restorative in the same category with the thousand and one loudly trura peted qUitcK remedies, until I met you in Lawrence coui.ty sotnc mouths siuce, when you gave iae such assuraucr as induced the trial of your Restorative in my family?fiwt by my good wire, whose hair had become very thin and en tirely, white, and before exhausting one of your large bot tles, her hair was rettored nearly to its original beautiful brown color, and had thickened aud become beautiful and glossy upon, and entirely over the head; ?he enmmuts to use it; not simply because of its beautifying-* ITect* upon the hair, but because of its healthful intluence upon the head and mind. Others of my family and friends are using your Restorative, with the happiest effects; therefore, my skepticism and doubt* In reference to its charactar and value nre entirely removed; and I can aud do most cordial ly and contidentlatly recommend iti use by all who would have their hair restored from white or gray (by reason of sickness or age,) to original color and beauty, and by young persons who would have their hair beautiful and glossy. Very t uly and gratefully yours, bOLOMON MANN. PaiKSD Wood: It was a longtime after I saw you ?tBKsa field before I got the bottle of Restorative for which you gave me an order n your agent In Detroit, and when 1 t:ot It we concluded to try it on Mrs. Mann'* hair, as the SureM test of Its power. It has done all thut you assured lue it woulu do; and others of tny family and friends, having wit nessed its effects, are now using and recommending its uso t-> others ns entitled to the highest consideration you claim for it Agalu, very respectfully and truly, yours, SOLOMON MANN. Caki.yle, Iix., June 23,1852 I have used Prof. O. J. Woo-l's Hair Restorative, and have admired its wonderful effects. My hair was becen. ing, as I thought, prematurely gray, but by the use of his Restorative it has resumed Its original color, and, I have no doubt, permanently so. S. BRESSE, ex-Senator, U. S. O. J.
