IE INTELLIGENCER. ?'RIDAY MORNING, NOV. 26, 1858. .est Circulation of any Paper in West orn Virginia. JEW An Unconquerable Virago.?Ofight be f >rc last Mary Turner, one of those women ?' .vhosc lips- drop as an honey comb, whose months arc smoother thnn oil" (in the sacred pri vacy of parenthesis we protest against the ap ' plication of the^proverb in this case) and of who.su end it Is written, s'lall be "bitter as wormwood, sharper than n two edged sword" was up before Aid. McCourtney for committing an unprovoked assault upon a Mrs. Ilaake, Mar . ket street. The assault grew out of an ancient grudge which Miry bo-: Mrs. Ilaake, and which was engendered, vhi-if Uio former was a guest or servant in the lattcr'a house. Aid. McCourtnayj sentenced Mary to jail, but with fire i.i her * blefl? ^pyes, she s-.vorc she would die first.? She tflPkcd, reared, howled and yelled, and of ? -licer Scroggins was compelled to procure a ? vehicle, then bind her hand and foot aud thus execute the magistrate's sentence. It was a see. ^ of* shocking interest and caused no small sensa tion in the neighborhood. Found Dead?Drunk.?Early yesterday morning a inan was found lying with half his body under water in the river, a short distance above the city. The man. who discovered the body at first thought it was that of some unfor tunate deck hand whom the never-ceasing cur rent of the Ohio had become tired of as a bur then, and cast up here for the Coroner. Upon a closer observation, however, the body mani fested signs of life, and was dragged out upon dry land. It proved to be a tipsy Hibernian) who, in passing the spot in a drunken condition' had slipped down the bank and tumbled par tially into the water. A large load of bad whisky, together with .the violence of the fall, rendered the poor fellow insensible, and he might have been carried into the stream and drowned but for the timely discovery. lie had a slight contusion on the head, occasioned by coriling in contact with astonn when he full in to the water. Lam en tat ion* of Joseph.?The incorrig able Joseph McKensie appeared before Alder man Dn'^y, yesterday, "lameu tin'the loss of his own true love," and looking the innocent to the life. He said that he was indebted to the malice of his wife for one hundred and sixty days board at the jail, the last thirty days of which had just expired. During his imprisonment the wife of his "buzzum" had broken open his house and taken - therefrom the household and kitchen furniture and everything else, not ex cepting Joseph's wardrobe. Joseph said he wanted redress, if the law could give it him, nnd while the magistrate informed him that he could afford him no relief, Joseph sat batting his red, ftiaky eyes, and by and by he was overcome by his portions and the heat, when a touch from the gentle wand of Morphcous sent the poor inebriate to the gorgeous realms of dreamland, where he forgot his poverty and all his imaginary wrongs. " -The Hem] >fie Id.?At the late meeting of the stockholders of this road, a general report was read in relation to its present condition under the existing management. Some of the stock-holders expressed a desire for a full and itemized statement of the affairs of the company ?such statement to shwhat the board had received from their predecessors, and in what shape the same had been received, and also what had been done of all funds placcd in their hands. Tlie directors replied that they were not in possession of the means necessary to pay for the making out of such a report, but that they were perfectly willing it should be laid be. fore the public, provided the stockholders would pay the cost, which would be about five hun dred dollars. This, of course, put an end to the matter. ? ErW*Ifan Killed.?Night before last, about 0 o'clock, a man by the name of Reese was run over and killed near AVarrcn, by the evening train on the Pittsburgh and Cleveland road.? Reese resided at Martinsville, had been on a visit to Warren and was returning upon the railroad track. The engineer saw him as the train approached around a curve, nnd blew his whistle, but failed to arrest the man's attention, and he was knocked down by the engine and terribly bruised. He was taken to Wnrren nnd died some time during the night. The remains were brought down to Martinsville yesterday morning for interment The deceased was a shoemaker by trade, was about forty j'ears of age and leaves a family in Martinsville. E~dff~T/ie local of the Cleveland Plaindealer ?advances the 'opinion with great seriousness and deliberation that, "tho sensation of a man who dashed his head wildly against a feathered bolster would differ from that of a man who performed a similar operation against a pile of cobble stones."- Werry likely. However, the experiment can easily be tried. From the same source wc letrn that Mr. Gleason, of the Line-of-Battle-Ship, is not the author of Hamlet, a tragedy. He wrote "The Female Pirate," but did not write,Hamlet.? Hamlet was written by a talented but unscrupu-. lous man named Macbeth, afterwards tried and executed for "murdering sleep." We hope that n generous and discriminating public will not permit such industrious and laborious research as is here shadowed forth, to go unrewarded. Some engineers on the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Railroad have been arrested and bound over in Steubcnville, for running trains through that city faster than the law allows.? Several persons have made narrow escapes with their lives in crossing the track, owing to the rapid running through the city. There, has been but little change ir\ the river since yesterday morning. The Com. Per ry had anchored her flats in the river, and was taking in freight for below. The weather was moderating and cloudy, indicating more falling weather. TEST Remember tho ball to-night of the Ger man Rifle Company. It will be a grand and entertaining affair. it So??The Morgnntown Skirsaysj that a couple of responsible gentlemen of Jef ferson county, Va., have purchased the Times and Gazette office, and intend publishing a Democratic paper at Wheeling. On Friday evening a temperance meet ing at Bellair was largely attended, and was ad dressed by Henry Echols, Esq., of Wheeling. The Committee appointed at a former meeting reported in favor of organizing anSblfashioned Washingtonian society. Dead. Major Ar.uisted Beckham, a prominent citizen of Allegheny city and Warden of the Western Penitentiary, died at his resi dence in that city on Wednesday, lie was a native of Virginia and once Master Armorer at Harper's Ferry. EST"Accident.?A Mrs. Hager met with a painful accident at Littleton Station, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the other day, by falling down a pair of stairs. She was not expected to recofrer, though there are still sanguine hopes. Sheep Killed.?On Sunday night of last week some dogs got into the sheep-fold of Mr. William Bebout, of Washington Co. Pa., and killed twenty outright, and wounded twenty others so badly that they cannot long survive. They were of a superior quality, and tho loss will fall heavily upon the owner. $p$f~Fire.?A private letter informs us that the engine house and water station at Fetterman on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were de stroyed by fire on Tuesday night. Two engines were destroyed, No. 115 and 127. Engine 115 was comparatively new, having been lately re built. Engine 127 was a ten wheeler used for passenger service. They are both badly burned and the loss is estimated at $20,000. HUSINES8 NOTICES. f^fStop that coughing! The "Hoarhound Balsam" will do it. Cure that hoarseness! Really a Capital Production!?The ce lebrity ofGayetty's Medicated Paper for the wa ter?closet is rapidly being extended throughout the United States. It is one of the best articles ever put before the public. It obviates tho use of chemically-poisoned white paper, and paper stained with pile producing printers' ink. It is a sure cure and preventive of piles. This may be relied on. It is as fine and light as bank note paper, and as tough as stout wrapper.? Nothing of more value and utility was ever be fore offered to the public. 1000 shebts cost on ly $1. 500 sheets 50 cents. Each sheet of the genuine contains the name of J. C. Gayetty, water-marked. Age and Debilitv.?As old age comes creep ing on, it brings many attendant infirmities.? Loss of appetite aud weakness impair tho health, and want of activity makes the mind discontent and unhappy. In cases where old ago adds its influence, it is almost impossible to add vigor and health and although many remedies have been tried, all have failed, until B<eiiave's Hol land Bitteks were known and used. In every case where they have been employed they have invariably given strength and restored the appe tite. They have become a great agent for this ?ulone, and are used by many people who are suf fering from loss of appetite and general dubilty. In eases of long standing chronic diseases, they act as a charm, invigorating the system, thus giving nature another opportunity to repair physical injuries. AN luvidioug and impudent card, recently "publlkhed by the" proprietors of, the Mustang, teems to call for some notice at our hands, and although we dislike newspaper controversies, and hare, always avoided them* we shall In this instance depart from our usual custom.; The card allu-. ded to Is aimed at BRAGfi'& ARCTIC LINIMENT, and very evidently has a pecuniary origin, these <ll?interested geur. tlemen disliking to see their-article supplanted so*rapidly by BSAQG'd ARCTIC. LINIMENT., Tlje card Is too desul-. tory for us to follow serfdom, but states that Dr. Bragg had published a card announcing th*t he'had no Airther con nection with the Mustang and would not hold himself re sponsible for its deteriorated quality, or for the injuries resulting from the use of the spurjpus nrtidfrwith which the market was glutted. Br. Bra git's son -li the only per son of that name having any interest In the Arctic Liniment. BRAtiQ'S ARCTIC LINIMENT is now and <has always been owned by Oliver T. Bragg and M. Bu'rrowes, doing business under the style of Bragg * Burrowcs, and the only connection Dr. Bragg ever had with it was in the slm-. pie fact ihat he invented it, Since inventing the Mustang, Br Bragg lias had many years of experience, and It is bet reasonable to presume that in his matured manhood he could produce a better remedy than in his comparatively inexperienced youth.? The instantaneous success of Bragg's Arctic Liniment, wherever it was introduced, bears conclusive testimony, that such was the fact. Before ihe Arctic Liniment had been introduced six months, it had superseded all other liniments, including th? Mustang. Iu the meantime a spu rious article of the Mustang made its uppeaVance In tl.e market, put up externally exactly like the genuine had been by Dr. Bragg, but as unlike it in q .ality as possille. Dr. Bragg was constantly annoyed by letters frcm various person) who had used this deteriorated and injurious arti cle of the Mustang, complaining o( its bad'i fleets, uuder. the mistaken impression that he was sti'l its proprietor. If: Dr. Bragg considered it to be his duty to set the matter be fore the public in a card announcing that he had no further counectiomvith it, tfiat was his allair, with wnich we have nothing to do. The vaunt of the Mustang prqpi ietors that they are well known to the business community is most amusing to-those who know tkeir status. ?+he tronlle l?, they are too well known. Their motive in the card alluded to is transparent; they dislike to see their^Cheaply made preparation superceded by Bragg's Arctic Llnituent, an article po greatly its superior, but which they affect to con sider a failure. Notwithstanding this affectation, they of fered a large sum for its suppression, and falling in that are now'expending much money for rewspappr cards, in the vain attempt to persuade the public that the Arctic Lin iment is a failure. The public are not so easily gulled as these gentlemen suppose, and can readily comprehend that if it were such a failure us these unscrupulous persons pre tend, they would i?e the last to disturb its quiet oblivion.? The fact is readily perceptible that they, are alarmed for the prosperity of their owu article, and well they, inay be, for they know that for an article to attain the substantial cel ebrity of BRAGG'S ARCTIC LINIMENT,it must possess an intrinsic value capable, of. posmve>.dexnoMtj;aUonr>tcd hence their only hope is In so abusing it th^f people may be deterred from trylng-.it, w;ell assured that 'if they ence tested its merits, they could never again be Induced to uso the Mustang. In conclusion, we claim that the Arctic Lin iment is the best article ever offered to the public, and that it will bear triumphantly every test that may bo applied to It.
