TUE INTELLIGENCES. MONDAY MORNING, DEC. 0, 1S38. Largest Circulation of any Paper in West era Virginia; Alleged Murder on the it earner Ben On Friday last a man named James j>.. vis made information before the Mayor of I'iusfiurgh charging an engineer on board the Ben Bolt with murder and implicating other of ficers in the crime. The poli e at the instance of the Mayor arrested all tlie parties they could find on the boat, and from our Pittsburgh ex changes w e take the following evidence elicited at the examination: James Davis, the prosecutor, was sworn and testified tha-. he, together with John Jones, shipped at St. J. ???!< >? ? Ouard the Ben Bolt, for Pittsburgh, they |-yi-g through; at Cincinnati tiie mate asked thcui if they would work up to Pittsburgh, which they consented to do; on the 22d ult. passed a boat aground below Marietta; the missing man shipped from that boat on the Ben Bolt; at night the Ben Bolt stopped on the Virginia side, [near Millersburg or Milk-report, Tyler county, Va. we suppose;] to fix a wheel, all hand got out to get a log, which being ob tained, most of the deck hands turned in to sleep; after this witness saw the engineer?did not sue him among the defendants arretted?go to the bunk of the deck hand, and tell him lie wanted him to go up and help fix the wheel, the engineer then pulled the man out of the bunk by his coat collar, befoie he was quite awake, knocked him down on the deck, kicked him two or three times, and then pushed him from the btink into the wheel house. Soon after the watchman and mate came along, and made in quiries for the man to go and help at the pump; when they inquired for the man, witness and others said they beiieved the engineer had pushed him overboard, to which the mate re plied, "It's a small loss?there are plenty more like him," and the watchman smiled but said nothing. Afterwards, the engineer who had pushed the inan into the wheel house came and sat by the stove, and said, "Look how I've kicked the sole of my boot by kicking that fellow." There were no other oflicers up at the time that witness was aware of. The boat started from the place the same morning about day break, but witness saw nothing of the engineer that day or the following night; the next morn ing (the 24th) when about two miles below Wheeling witness saw the engineer jump off the steamer into a flat or coal boat and go ashore. The day after the event happened wituess heard n deck passenger, who got oil' at Marietta, ask the matu for the name of the engineer, to which the mate replied that he did not know it. Wit ness had seen the deck hand the day before when he shipped from the boat aground ; he was a small young man ; was a stranger to witness; said he had worked at Pittsburgh, Wheeling, 1 ronton, and Cincinnati, and that he cainc from Cilen Morganshire, South Wales. Witness was certain that it was the engineer who left the Ben Bolt below Wheeling. John II. Jones corroborated this testimony, and the good character of Davis was proved by other witnesses. The Mayor held Capt. Alford, Fitzsimmons and Hays, oflicers, for a further heating on Friday, in $5,000 each. Fulton, the engineer, and apparently the guilty party, left the steamer at Wneeling, and is probably in this State. The watchman, who smiled so sig nificantly, and the mate, are missing. The for mer, engaged as a watchman on the Clara Dean, has made himself invisible. Wo presume all possible effort will be made to capture the mis sing parties. the Market.?Our market on Satur day morning! Such a scene as it, and the streets leading thereto, presented, we reckon will never be witnessed again. The rain poured down incessantly from early morning till the market closed with its "fluctuations and its vast concerns." Three or four hundred women with baskets on their arms, sweat upon their brows, saturated heads and shoulders and muddy, drag gled skirts crowded round the stalls hurrying to buy their provisions and anxious to get home out of the the wet Those who catne into the market house dry, had only to pass through, in order to become water soaked and ornament ed with mud. Every coat, every basket, quar ter of beef and piece of calico dripped with moisture, which was pretty well distributed among the attendants in the general crowding and shuffling. There was "water, water, every where and not a drop to drink." Up to ten o'clock in the forenoon the streets were dotted by women with heavy baskets who stopped at every convenient place to rest and stood recov ering their breath and strength in the falling rain. However fair or foul the weather, the marketing in this city is done by the women, as the hucksters and butchers can testify to their sorrow, and as men can substantiate with do light. A Bridal Party.?We noticed the other day, a stolen marriage on the Wheeling steamer J. B. Ford, in which the clerk of that boat was the principal party. The Louisville Courier has the following: A magnificent dinner parly was given yester day l>y Capt. McCullough, of the Wheeling packet J. B. Ford, to the clerk, Mr. A. B. John son. Our clerical friend had the good fortune to woo and win one of the finest daughters of old Virginia, abstracting her from the paternal roof at Parkersburg, and marrying her at Pome roy, O. At the entertainment, yesterday, the handsome and venerable editor of the Democrat, Col. J. II. Harney, presided. The Ford is due hero to-day. ?? ?)<??*. EdgT" The Weather.?A great deal of water has fallen during the past month. It rained all day yesterday, and with as much earnestness as though the ground had been drying out for a month. The amount of water that fell during November was 5.G1 inches. The mean tempera ture of tlio month, was 42 degrees?just 2 de gress below the average during a period of 32 years past. The highest temperature during that period was 05 degrees arid the lowest 25 degrees. Eif"Fortlalling.?Anthony Brown, 'on Satur day, purchased a box of dressed^eese, in a sort of monpolizing manner, and commenced to re tail the them in the market He was arrested by officer Wickham and fined five dollars by Aid. Wright. Ho would not pay the fine, whereupon an execution was issued and the geese were sold for the benefit of the city. It is strange that people will continue the practice of forstailing the market, when they know that de tection and punishment is almost sure to follow. stranger, a jolly fellow, drunk ami beside himself, sought shelter in the Market House on Saturday morning. He curled him self up on a bench, and in a voice resembling the wheeze of a chronic donkey, proceeded to discourse? "Oh,-'Us my delight of a shiny night," a song which drunken men have a peculiar pas sion for humming. The song being very inap propriate, with the rain pouring down in torrent?, and the singer chilled in every limb, the attention of an olficer was attracted to the carcass, and the two departed in quest of more comfortable lodgings on Fifth street. Ian Killed.?A man by the name of Purvis was run over and killed by a train of cars at Yellow Cieek, on Friday night lie was not found until next morning. Large.?Craig, the man who escaped from officer Deafenbaugh the other day, is still it large. The charge against him is, that ho seat a widow woman in the first ward.? kVhon taken before a magistrate Craig wanted ;o put the trial off, and started with the officer ;o hunt some one to go his bail for his appear ance. Not finding the desired person he con cluded leg bail was better than none. &TOdd Fellows' Hall.?The Odd Fellows' [fall Association met on Saturday evening and iccepted the bids of the following persons, for .he building of their new llall on the corner of fourth and Main streets. Brick Work, Jos. Britt. Stone Work, J. & T. W. Bennett. Carpenter Work, W. Hamilton. ?lastering, John Jones. Iron Work, W. & J. stewart Painting, B. Pratt. Tin Work, Stcw irts & Caldwell. Finance Committee. Isaac Cotts, Alfred 3aldwell, Jacob Berger, and G. W. Franzheim. Building Committee. Isaac Colts, John Hamilton, Jauies M. Todd, and Alonzo Loring_ The building will be the finest public struc ture in Wheeling, excepting, perhaps, the new Custom House. It will be commenced on the 1st of April, 1859, and completed as rapidly as possible. liicer.?The river was rising on Saturday night with over seven feet in the chan nel. The Morning Light left for New Orleans. The recent rains will swell the river considera bly if the mild weather continues. The Endeavor, in addition to being injured by the Telegraph swinging in against her oppo site the mouth of the Big Miamn, it appears that ii portion of her cargo?a lot of flour?was swept or knocked overboard, and a number of barrels stove in. The pilot and mate of the Nat Holmes killed a couple of deer while on their recent St. Louis trip. Mr. Geo. Burks, the pilot, shot a noble buck in the Mississippi, at Tower Island. The mate, Mr. Hunter, killed his pet with an oar and jack knife, while it was swimming across the Ohio at Urand Chain. i Sunday.?Somebody says that Sunday is the golden clasp which binds together the vol ume of the week. TALK of beauty, it cannot exist without a fine head of hair, then read the following, and ir you ask more, see circular around each bottle, and no one can doubt: tliOF. WOOD'S IK A IK KE8TOKATIVE. We call the attention of al, old and young, to this won derful preparation which turns back to its original color, Rray hair?covers the head of the bald with a luxuriant growth?removes the dandruff, itching, and all cutancous eruptions?causes a continual How of the natural fluids; and hence, if used as a regular dressing for the hair will preserve its color, and keep it from falling to extreme old age, in all its natural beauty. We call then upon the bald, the gray, or diseased In scalp, to use it; and surely the young will not, as they value the flowing locks, or the witching curl, ever be without it. Its praise is upon the tongue of thousands. The Agent for Prof. Wood's Hair Restorative in New Ha ven, received the following letter in regard to the Restora tive, a few weeks since: Dbbp River, Conn., July 28,1855. Mr. Leavenworth?Sir: I have been troubled with dan druff or scurf ou my head for more than a year, my hair began to come out, scurf and hair together. 1 saw in a New Haven pap. r about "Wood's Hair Restorative" as a cure. I called at your store on the 1st of April last, and purchased one bottle to try It, and found to my satisfac tion it was the thing; it removed the scurf and new hair be gan to grow; it isnuw two or three i ches in length ichere it tcas all off. I have great faith in it. I wish you to send me two bottles more by Mr. Post, the bearer of this. 1 don't know as any of the kind is used in this place, you may have a market for many bottles afttr it is known hire. Ycurs with respect, RUFUS PRATT. Philadelphia, Sept. 9,1166. Prof. Woon?Denr Sir: Your Hair Uest5ratlve is proving itself beneficial to me. The front, and also the back part of my head almost lost its covering?in lact iiald. I have used but two half pint bottles of your Restorative, and now the top of my head is well studded with a promising crop oi young hair, and the front is also receiving its btnefit. 1 have tried other preparations without any benefit whatever. I think from my own personal recommendation I can In duce many others to try it. Yours respectfully, D. R. THOMAS, M. D. No. 464 Yine street. Vincenhks, Ia., June 22,1658. TROF. O. J. WOOD: As you are about to manufacture and vend your recently discovered Hair Restorative, I will state, for whomsoever it may concern, that I have used It and known others to use it?that, I have, for several years, been in the habit of using other Hair Restoratives, and that I find yours vastly superior to any other I know. It en tirely cleanses the head of dandruff, and with one month'* proper use will restore any person's hair to the original youthful color and texture, giving it a healthy, soft and glossy appearance; and all this, without discoloring the hands that apply it, ?rthe dress on which itdrops. I would, therefore, recommend its use to every one desirous of hav ing a fine color and texture to their hair. Respectfully yours, WILSON RING. O. J. WOOD k CO., Proprietars, 812 Broadway, N. LETCHER NOMINATED Peteiisburu, Va., Doc. 4th.?The Democratic Convention rc assembled at 11 A. M. Letcher's vote was 85,532, a majority over all of 17,520. The nomination was declared unanimous. Gor don of Albemarle, Wise and other bitter oppo nents were formerly pledged to do everything to secure tho election of the nominee. John Randolph Tucker was nominated for Attorney General by acclamation. The merits of six or more candidates for Lieut. Governor was being discussed. The convention will ad |journ to-night. The Buchanan vote in the State was 89,706, so that it is clearly a mistake in the dispatch that Letcher received 85,532. AVe presume that it should have read that the latter was tho total vote cast?which may have happened from some counties not being represented, or from some other cause not apparent. By tho latest mails we have the following in nddition to the dispatch.?Eos. Intel. I'ryor concluded his speech (in behalf of Letcher) amid tremendous applause, and was followed by AV'm. jr. Tredwoy, also l'or Mr. Letcher. O. Jennings Wise also made another speech for Mr. Letcher, and is still speaking as this dispatch is sent off. (This is also another telegraphic blunder. Or else Wise has turned the loftiest somerset known to even latter day Virginia politics.) STII.r, FURTHER. Tho convention continued in session until 4 o'clock this (Saturday) morning and Mr. Letch er was nominated by a large majority on the first ballot. The candidates were Letcher, Hop kins, Edmondson, Smith, of Greenbriar, Brock - enbrough, and John Randolph Tuckcr. Letch er was nominated by about 12,500 over all? each county being entitled to the number of Democratic votes cast at the last Presidential election. Letcher's friends arc in exstacics. Columbia, S. C., Dec. 4th.?W. D. Porter of Charleston has been elected President of tho Senate in place of James Chestnut, elected U. S. Senator. Resolutions wcro yesterday intro duced in tho House, instructing representatives in Congress to use all efforts to secure tho repeal of all measures of tho general government re strictive of the slave trade, the samo being an indication of the rights of tho South.
