.X,ubI'Ntellige;?iek [from the Great Republic Monthly.] DEAD. BY JIAKV FOCST. Come down from tlio mist-shrouded mountain, Zimino, I am weary nnd cnid; Comedown in thy glorifiedIbMUfy, Zi.nino, The night is wearing old, All its long hours I have waited for yon, Have stood in the chill of thu gathering dew, And listened and waited for you. Fearful soundscouio muttering nigh, Fearful shapes go shuddering by ; But I stand still in the gathering dew, Listening and wailing for you. Here, in the gloom, arc two eyes, Zimino, Stabbing the dark and inc; Two great, round, motionless eyes, Zimino, That seem, and seem not to sec; And from under these motionless eyes Come owlish and strange roplies. To the thought that within mo lies: Tu-whit! tu-whoo! Untrue! untrue! Tu-whit! tu-whoo! Untrue! Tu-who? But I stand still in the glare of these eyes, For the thought that within me lies. I could not be jealous, Ziuiine, Of an angel; 'Tis because you are pure and a saint, Zimino, Ttie blessed Evangel Comes down to the .mountain to yon, And I stand hero in'tho chilling dew, With a thought so s-veet and true. So the demon-eyes are harmless. And the owlish song is charmless, For I echo it back; Tu-whit! tu-whoo! Untrue! tu-who? Vet I am alone and cold, Ziuiine ? Lonely and cold; And the night is wearing old, Ziniine? Dreary and old; Then stay in thy mystical flight; Say to the angel "liood night," And comedown with thy crown of light. Bring t<? thy lovjr a token ? A word by the angel spuKen ? A silver star from thy coronal bright, Toset in my night. Only a low mocking echo, Ziminc; Only a wnil. As of pain, or madness, Zimine, Whispers the gale. Still glistens the great round eyes, Still mutter the strange replies, And the thought that is in me Dies! I Jisten no more fur yon, 1 wait no more in the dew; From the grave where my dead thought lies, No chost will arise. THE W?J W - YO rt t? TiiiBUJffJS, lSo8-9.
