Wk have elsewhere culled some gems from theV'ritins" of the funny man of the N. Y. Tribune. The N. Y. 11 trail seems to be afflic ted with an attacheo something after the same style. He has been trying his hand of late upon the " Watering places," in the course of which he tells us that the proprietors of tho va rious hotels in operation at Saratoga, Newport, &.C. "are full of promises of the most gorgeous description. Everybody is to have every earth ly tiling dono for them for next door to nothing at all." Ho further more communicates the agreeable intelligence that The best beds, the best dinners, Nio best attendance and the best wines?in fact, the best of everything?is to be given for a much lower price than has been paid heretofore for tho worst of everything. The Irish waiters are not to light any more, and will givo up whisky; the colored persons are not to assume superiority over white guests, but are to be polite, respect ful and altogether perfeet gentlemen. Both Celtic and African servants arc to wear white gloves constantly, and to spurn bribes with tho lofty scorn of a member of Congress. Every thing is to be of the nicest description -there are To be no annoyances, no ripples to disturb the serenity of the stream of enjoyment. Ill some places regular prayers arc to be offered morning,f noon and night. Tho dcttipere in low art is to be practised to perfection, so far as Boniface is concerned. The funny man of the ITertild has much ad vice, (which commodity is dogg'd cheap in the Herald olllcc,) to olfcr to "persons (visiting these Springs) who call themselves gentlemen," among which is the caution to Pay attention to their linen, wear less than seven pounds of watch chain, discard breastpins, swear less, chew less tobacco, above all spit less, refrain from smoking in carriages or upon promenades in the faces of ladies, avoid rusty black clothes, and comport themselves general ly in a sober and discreet way. _ Fascinating young inert must cease to mistake impertinence lor wit, and try to avoid being made the laugh ing slock of sensible people by mischievous co quettes. Ho tells us that the ladies "might mend their manners" also, and that The young ones should dress simply, and never wear jewelry; the matrons and dowagers should remember that maturity has its duties as well as its priviliges. Above all, the size of the hoops should be reduced. Our W estern belles look like so many beer barrels, and, as they waddle along Broadway, provoke merri ment rather than admiration. As a matter of taste, crinoline ougli to be dispensed with alto gether; but we cannot have its area increased in the present state of things. We cannot increase the area of the world, and unless that could be done, the exoansion of crinoline must be arrest ed at some point- The point has been readied. if these advices of his are earned out, the IleraUl man thinks it nuitc likely Things at the watering places may bo expected to go on smoothly enough, and the season will be too brilliant for human contemplation. We shall bo obliged to look at it through a smoked glass. Is the Second Congressional District of Ala bama, there is, just now, a man running whose name is Pugb. He has never been in Congress vet, but he has an ambition to get there, and he means to get there, if the biggest splurge of words that any fire cater has yet given vent to will take liiin there. Just now, Pugh is in the hands of the Now York Tribune. That journal has delegated its salt and pepper man to look after Pugh?even as he did after Keitt Tho salt and pepper man of the great Humanitarian organ, feels in duty bound to be intense, in his way. And he is quite so. lie commences, for instance, thus: There is a certain cavalier now making tracks in the lid District of Alabama, lie is headed for the seat dignified in the XXXV th Congress by the incubations of the lion. Eli Shorter. He is running with wonderful wind, and, if ?e mav be allowed the expression, bottomless hot torn. The name of this clattering candidate is Puch and wo are sure that he most be a scion of the house of Pugh-Pugh, the obscurity of which is very illustrious. "The obscurity of which is very illustrious!" We call that good?"dem foine."* The Salt and Pepper man heicgets on a strain after a keen shot, which, in our eye, very near lets him down to the level of. the ridiculous. We do not hear of anything of the late Snor ter?we mean Shorter?but we fancy that when Puch entered the arena, Shorter becoming, more decidedly abbreviated, bad a wholesome fear of passing from tho comparative into the superla tive decree, and declined to go his length, lest he might have no length to go, and, having en tered himself with respectable dignity as bhort er, might be compelled ignouuniously to retire as Shortest. He recovers, however, in time, as the auc tioneers say, and proceeds on quito a unique "run" (as the Billiard men term it) of entertain ing take off. For instuncc. Mr. Pugh cominenceshismanifesto by remind in" the free and enlightened electors o 1 lie Sec ond that he "has grown up among them from infancy"?from which we infer that lie is a kind of phenomenon, and that other distinguished characters are in the habit of "growing down among them from "manhood. ^ "Growingdown among them from manhood, is good. The next "run" is tame in compari son with it and wo shall "let it slide," as Banks said about the union. But here is something which like Jecms Yel lowplush will make a fellow "Inrf:" Mr Pugh will not commence belligerent de monstrations until after "the election of ai Black Republican President." Simultaneous y with that event, tho crimson orb of War will .egm to roll. Also, the drums in Alabama. A fright ful panorama of siege and sack, of confla^ratio and of confiscation, of rapine andiof ravening, bursts upon Lhe agonized vision! tor alas. Ml. Puirh leave* us in no doubt of his infernal in is words are dreadfully distincL |"l pledge myself to raise an Alabama regiment to light tho torch or revolution in the Capitol ut Washington." His very wortls! Heavens, l>ut to think of it! The Treasury rifled, al though fortunately there will bo very little in ill The Capitol occupied as a barrack! Tho White (louse in the possession of tho Generalissimo I'ugh! An exasperated soldiery knocks the nose from tho sacred statue of Washington! ? Tho ;ltc|)ublican President is conducted in chains (borrowed from a neighboring baracoon) through Pennsylvania avenue! The liquors of the principal hotels are seized 1 Pugli is creat ed Perpetual Dictator, and tho curtain fulls. The Salt and Pepper Man sagaciously pfcr ceives that if something more, by way of an addenda, were not vouchsafed tho readers of the Tribune, after such a terrific closing as the above, they would naturally and unconsciously either lift the "curtain" again or elso buy a i/erultl, in the hopes of getting something fur ther on the subject. To prevent such mischicf, especially the last step, he considerately, after taking breath, continues: As such will he the nwful consequences of tho election of a Republican President, we would suggest the immediate and patriotic abandonment of that project. Mr. Pugli tiny not lie trotted by "sickly apprehensions," but we aro. "File, famine and slaughter"?doubt less his "great revenge has stomach for them all." But we havo no particular desiro to be "killed and eaten." We do not wish to he car ried captive to the Sunny South, to assist at the triumphal entry of the indomitable Pugh.? What will be the henulit of electing a Republi can President, if Pugh means to attend the In auguration, halter in hand, ready to hang tho new officer the moment lie has taken thu oaths and finished his specch ? If Mr. Pugh will agree to terms, and will, for a consideration, promise not "to fling his banner to the breeze," and not "to light the torch of revolution in the Onpitol," we are for securing his forbearance, if not by abandoning our political organization, at least bv the payment to him of a subsidy suffi cient to keep him in juleps and tobacco juice during the remainder of his earthly career. f"\IKKCT from tho Importer* ami Manufacturers, a VKRY / I#AIICK and iieautirui assortment of Cold Wiilrlicx iii Kfi'rr ."?lyle ?
