A Straw M Poultry House
Tenauts and other persons do
siring a temporary shelter for
poultry would do well to consider
n straw shed house, according to
T. S. Townsley, of the University
of Missouri College4 of Agricul
ture. Such a house is very simple
to make and will serve ns excellent
quarters for poultry during at
least ono winter. If a supporting
frame is built boforo threshing
time it is no trouble to blow the
straw from the threshing machine
oyer and around this frame to
form, a shed completely closed in
with straw on all oides excepting
the south. A supporting frame,
can bo easily made by getting a
post for each corner of the pro
posed shed and placing across the
top of theso posts heavy poles to
form tho supports for tho frame
work of rails, boards, or light
poles which will hold up the
straw. After the straw has been
thrown over this frame, a front
such as is used on any modern
poultry house can be built on the
south side. This front should in
clude some open, space and4some
windows to provide ventilation
and furnish light. The iiisidn of
tho hoiioo may bo equipped with
dropping boards, roosts and nests,
just the same as any other poultry
house. A straw shed house of
this tpye 20 feet square on the
farm of George Hoettler near St.
: Peters, Missouri, furnished shelter
for 125 hens. Theso birds came
through without a frozen comb
and laid all winter.
If such u house becomes infested
with mites during warm weather,
the birds can bo allowed to roost
outside dHt ing tho summer months
and n new house can be built each

Missouri has a Catholic popu
lation of 538,092, according to
the 1919 edition of the "Offliciul
Catholic Directory," which lias
just been published in New
York. The publication gives
Missouri ns the ninth among 28
states having a Catholic popula
tion of 100,000 or more. The
total number of Catholics re
corded in the United States is
17,549,321, an increase of 133,021,
over the preceding year. Ac
cording to the compilers of the
directory, it is probable that the
number of Catholics in this
country is at least 19,500,000.
Several dioceses did not take a
new census this year, and the
lloating population not accounted
for in any diocese would make
the figure larger, it is said.
