JEN'ERAL MARKET REVIEW. LOCAL FINANCES. The money market here la In au unusu ally satisfactory condition. Tbo Urge dis l.ur-onienta ot the past two mouths for hoss " . and corn, of which Indianapolis nas pro duceil an abundance this season, are finding their way back to the banks through the various channel of trade. Collections hare been rt-eftdily improving for the past two months, and since Christmas cprir-ideraUe amount of old indebtedness have been' set tled with the merchants here. The full pur chssjs were made prudeutry, and, inconsc .qaeuco, tocks are well reduced, and in place thereof there are handsoino bal ances to their credit iu bank. The bank are well supplied with loanable funds, nd are giving- their customers any reau-'iMe accommodation that may be re quired. 1 here U but little inqniry recently lor long loans, and a much larger demand in thst direction could now 1 accom modated. But while money U abandaut, the greatest care U exercised iu the granting of favcrs. The best ' commercial paper, or that which is backed by good collaterals, 1$ used at ten per cent, for regular customers, nd for outride parties at oue per cent, a mouth. Hankers look upon the business situation as exceptionally good; they have aot knowu the wholesale trade of the city working so easily as Tjow tor a number of years. FREIGHT FACILITIES AT PIULADKLI'DiA. The following letter from a Philadelpbian to the Chicago Tribune will bo read with iu ere&t here. The trade relations between rmladdlphu and Indianattolts nave ever been intimate, and merchants here have boon favored with a liberal share of orders from the Quaker metropolis: : I notice every day some item of news re garding Chicago's outlet to Europe via the Kas'ern seaboard cities of mltiraore, rew York, Boston and Portland, but notono word for lTila Jelphia; and people may be led to think that the Quaker City, or City of Brotherly Love and the largest manufacturing city in this country, aud we think the largest in the world, Manchester not excepted Is drying np. Hut not so; her c-itizsnsare wide awake. They have quietly built and own a strictly first-class line of iron steamships the only line plying between thi3 country and Europe carrying the United States flag. These vessels hare all the modern improvements for pas sengers and freight, making good time from .Liverpool to Philadelphia and from Phila delphia to Liverpool, forming a weekly line, J4iid through the diligence of their officers and agents at Philadelphia, Chicago, and elsewhere, they are being filled with freight and passengers in both iirt-cti;ti. This, the American line, has a hire and growing business with Chi osgo. fc?ome of the heaviest importers of good1 in this market are importing exclu sively bv this line. Philadelphia also owns and controls an Antwerp liuo of new iron steamships, built for tbem on the Tyne. This is the ime of the International Naviga tion Company of Philadelphia, and is called the Red Sur Line, aud, like the American lino. is running full cargoes fortnightly, gathered up from the Pennsylvania railroad and Is feeders. The export and import trada are iucreairg as rapidly at Philadel phia, if not more rapidly, than at any other of the Eastern seaboard cities. Phlladel r hia his three elevators for grain, the first at the Weft Philadelphia terminus of the Penn sylvania railroad. This el3va:or has a svstem of 000 bins, and can keep COO "car-loads of graiu as if in so many cars, and can be easily aud speed ily handled. The advantage to bo derived from this is, that the Western shipper can have the verv identical grain he ships sold upon its merits. Then they have a Becond elevator built ot iron and brick, stuated at the Washington dock. This has a capacity of ft quarter of a million bus-heU of grain, aud Is used for storage and transfer into steam and Bail ships, and is kept constantly employed in this service. Next Jn order is elavator three as we will call it having been but recently completed. It i, without doubt, the fiuest . elevator ever built on this continent. It is located at Girard Point, the junction of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, and is thoroughly fire proof. The bins are of wrought-iron, the walls ot brick and stone, the roof of iron and slate. Six railway tracks pass through the building, and 21 cars can be unloaded at one and the same time. This elevator has a storage rapacitv of 800,000 bushels, and a transfer capacity of 1,000 cars in 24 hours. This great elevator has a covored track of dock on eaeb side. The last features of great Interest to Western shippers, when it ia un derstood all freights to Europe go by this means directly to the ship's side. Flour, provisions and other products are loaded iu through cars at Chicago and points west.and Ko directly from the car to the steamship, not being from under over between point of shipment and Europe. Ivo greater perfection . can ever be reached, and no "cheaper and more exixditious means of handling or transfdrring freight be devised than the one now used by the Pennsylvania Railroad at Philadelphia. The Girard Point elevator and dock have 30 loet ot water on each sids and at the east end, and have ample capacity to receive and discharge freight ten or more . strain or sail snips at one and the earn time. WEEKLY REVIEW. As was anticipated in oar last review the trade of the past wetk has not been entirely clear of the holiday Influence, and of the eolncldtnt one of the annual settling period. The grain mar ket has been devoid of excitement. Orders have oome bat slowly and generally with limitations a cent or two inside the views nf holders. The stock of corn in store I accumulating steadily; aboul 1(MU baohels having been added dur.ng the week. On Wednesday and Thursday there was a perceptible weakness in the market and some Mile were made at 1 cent decline from pre vtoua quota lion. Tnre vu, howTT, too much confidence that the decline would beaoon recovered to permit of anything approaching a froe movement. Ou Saturday the advice were of a more encouraging tenor to holden, bat the evere cold with Die thermometer marking be low zero all day effectually suspended business so that there were no transactions. Nearly 60. Ota) bushel ofoau were sold dating the week at very aatUiaclor y prices lo the party wbo bad been holding them sometime. There was no general movement of that grain, however, al most all of It being controlled by a si ogle nrm. la h beat Utere baa been but little doln; there ha been no shipping demand and millers find so much d Cicuity in disposing of product that they are bot buying bo tree!) as usual. 1 here Is bat little dolDg In needs aud that In a very small way and price are without quotable change. Hay la in abundant supply fully equal to the demand aud sellers axe willing to make concession on car lota. THE PROVISION MARKET has been very dull and transastions have been limited in volume. The heavy receipts of hog at Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis and at thin point has had a depressing influence upon the market aud there has been considerable fluctu ation tu the principal market. The packers here have superior storago facility and their ar- rauct meats contemplate tbo holding of the best of their produotuntll the later season. Tempo rary tcpreMion in the market, therefore, but suspends sales, sometimes to tue great annoy auceot the broktrj. Lard has been growiog nnneraurinr me wees under the influence ot advancing prices at Liverpool, and prlcea are better, TUt Ouclunall Price Current, usually ery accurate in its packing statistics, naa in some way been led to stale that ue average wetgnt oi Hops and laid at this point la euual i laut year. The average net weicht of hogs packed is 16 pounds less than last scAfrou, and the yield of lard is 7 pounds less per nop. au accouuu agree luai ma nog arriving On Western markets during the past week have been of a much better qua'lty tnn previously The number has surprised everybody, and docs not Indicate the exhaustion of tho supply iu the country uy any means. GENERAL MARKET. tlusihess generally has not been particularly active, but is still unusually good for the week after New Y ear. In groceries the only change was au improvement in coffees of about cent od ail grades of Klo, and a firmness with advan cing tendency In sugars. Eastern advices indi cate that holders have a decided advantage. Prices have advanced at KloJaoelro. liiestocx ou the matket are unusuilly light; on January :d there was in New York bat ,792 bags of all kinds as against 39,012 in 1S74, 7., 217 in 1S73 and ti,2s4 iu Uli. The trade is represented as on a very bound basis, and the small stock Is chang ing bonds freely. The dry goods trade has been unexpectedly eood durin the week, prices have varted but little. In New York there was on the 5th a reduction of 1 tent per yard upon almost all kinds of denims ticking and otner colored goods, .stock here are unusually light and this cocdlUou i said to characterise tho smaller markets. This Is also cited in the Eastern mar kets as evidence that there must soon he an In cread demand upon that section. The drug market is quiet. Just a fair business doing. I'rlcc are ruling steady. There has been an ad vance of 2c. per gallon In linseed oils and from 1 tol'c. In petroleum, while the improvement In lard has given an upward tendency to lard oils. The Iron market is in a healthy condition. Trade is eood. coilectious are gool, and stocks arc s low in the country that au Improving de mand 1 anticipated. Hull t Co., of Cincinnati, rerort as to pig iron that the market is steady, and alluougn there are tome sales of round lots, tho larger number of buyers ate still delaying tuelr purchases. . i Quotations are given for the buying prices of zrain and produce, and tne seaing prices lor Hour aud other merchaudise.l BREAlTUKS.
