Mrs. Angeline Smith, who lives three miles north of Leon, reached that honored age of four scores years on Monday, and the day was a most pleasant one for her, as her Children remembered her with some beautiful greenhouse flowers and Other present. The man who threshes forty bushels of wheat and sixty bushels of oats to the acre and has a clean corn field all tasseled out, needn't worry because he wasn't elected a delegate to anything anywhere. B. W. Lanning departed last Thursday for Winfield, Kansas, having been delayed a day on ac count of being unable to secure a car. His family went to New Hamp ton the previous day to visit over night with Mrs. Lanning's parents. Mrs. Thomas Penisten and chil dren, of Maryville, Mo., who had been visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Smith, at Pleasan ton, came to Leon Monday for a visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mr. and Mrs. Abe Moyer, of Pitts burg, Penna., an uncle and aunt of Dr. F. C. Hume, came last week to visit a couple of weeks here. They came in their auto and were accom panied by Dr. R. A. Foster, of Piano, 111., and Mrs. Hattie Foster, his mother, and Mrs. L. A. Mooney, a sister, from Mazon, 111., Mrs. Foster being the grandmother of Dr. Hume, and Dr. Foster and Mrs. Mooney, an uncle and aunt. Our old friend Lyman Forgrave, for many years a prominent citizen of Leon, was one of the successful candidates at the primary election held at St. Joe, Mo., last week, and was nominated for Justice of the peace by a handsome majority. And Lyman will be elected by an even greater majority, for he is one of the most popular men in St. Joe, and has never failed to land any office he ever went after. Friends in Leon have received in vitations to attend the wedding of Mliis Lucile Elizabeth Warner to Dr. Hugo Bruno Carl Riemer, which will be solemnized at &race Epis copal church in Ellensburg, Wash ington, on Monday, September 2nd. The bridal party will leave at once for an extended wedding tour in Europe. The bride is quite well known in Leon, having spent last summer in this city with her grand mother, the late Mrs... J.. R. Bradshaw re turned Saturday from Minneapolis, Minn., and other northern points where they enjoyed a two weeks stay during Rev. On Wednesday he went to Keokuk to be present at the dedication of the new soldier's monument in hon or of the unknown dead. Mrs Brown left here Wednesday morn ing to join him at Keokuk. Mrs. Rosanna Baxter returned Tuesday to her home at Valley Cen ter, Kansas, after visiting for sever al weeks In this city at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jas. A. Arm strong. Her grandson, Estey Arm strong, accompanied her to Valley Center to visit a few weeks before returning to college at Pella, Iowa. Mrs. Dr. J. H. Reynard, of Osceola, wis an over night guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Lemley in this city last Thursday. She came down especially to hear T.haviu's great band at the Chautauqua. Several autos of Os ceola people had arranged to visit Leon Thursday, but the heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday pre vented them coming. Mrs. J. Wesley Chew and Mrs. C. M. Wheeler, of Pleasanton, came in Tuesday evening on the train. In company with their husbands they had taken an auto trip to visit rel atives in Hplden, Kansas, but had to leave their car at Grant City on the way home on account of the mud. Mr. Chew and Mr. Wheeler came in on the night train. Dr. and Mrs. A. Brown and daugh ter, Mrs. John Lindsey, of Des Moines, came down Saturday for a visit with their many friends in this city. Dr. Brown, who is a gov ernment pure food inspector, with headquarters at Des Moines, had to return to that city Monday morning on the early train, but Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Lindsey remained for a few days viiit. Dr. Geo. F." Wagonei^ wife and son and daughter, Geo. E. and Florence, of Creston, drove down Sunday morning in their auto to spend the day with their son, F. A. Wagoner, The Reporter's linotype operator, and wife in this city. Just west of Leon they broke a small part of their auto and had to leave it here for repairs. The Drs. Elino Evans, of Bisbee, New Mex ico, who had been to New York City on business, stopped off in this city last Wednesday and visited until Friday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Evans. Miss Hazel, the seventeen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat rick Griffin, of Grand River, was stricken with a strange illnes last Saturday afternoon, which complet ly baffled the physicians, a specialist being called from Des Moines in con sultation. She remained uncon sciousness until 1:15 yesterday af ternoon, when she passed away. Miss Olive Gwinn, one of the pop ular young ladies of this city, was operated upon by Drs. Mayo at Rochester, Minn., last Wednesday for appendicitis. Reports received are that she is doing fine, and is well on the way to recovery. She was accompanied to Rochester by her aunts, Mrs. E. H. Leon Cement and Brick Co. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Cozad, of Eden township, left Tuesday evening for Carter, S. D., where the Cozad boys have a big farm, and Mert will help to harvest 1,000 acres of flax. They will be gone for several weeks. Fred Fisher returned last Thurs day from Cainsville, where he has been working for some time on the carpenter work of the new school building being erected at that place by C. H. Harrison, the St. Joe con tractor who built the Burlington depot in this city. Mrs. M. Tolbert, of Des Moines, who was visiting at the home of Win Cash in this city, went to De catur City Monday where she will visit a few days with relatives and then return to Leon for a longer visit before returning to her home in Des Moines. The fine rains of the past week have insured a bumper corn crop in Decatur county this year, but they have interfered considerably with the many threshing crews at work in this county. Mr. Harry L. Johnson, of Salem, Iowa, came last Thursday to visit a few days in this city at the home of his cousin, Mrs. E. E. Bell.
