The great prize fight for the heavy weight championship of the world held at Toledo, Ohio, on July 4th, made a new world's champion, Jack Dempsey winning the bout in the third round, defeating Jess Willard, who gave up the fight at the, end of the third round, stating it was use less for him to continue, although Dempsey had him whipped in the' very first round, and the sounding of the gong was all that saved Willard. When the men entered the ring Willard weighed 243 pounds and Dempsey 187 pounds, but Dempsey had the advantage of age, being 24 years old while Willard admits being 38, and it is claimed he is nearer 4T than 3S. It is the old story of youth against age, and no champion has ever been able to come back af ter reaching the age of 35 years. Dempsey sent Willard to the floor time after time in the first round, closing one of his eyes, and Willard seemed to be dazed from the blows. When the gong sounded at the end of the first round Willard was on the floor the referee having counted nine when the gong rang, and this was all that saved Willard from being knock ed out. Willard received a guarantee of $100,000 for his share of the fight, which is consfderaDle more than Dempsey will get, but the lat ter will now make a fortune on the stage, having already been offered 510,000 a week for twelve weeks. Willard says he is through with the fight game and will devote his time to looking after his oil interests, as he has saved his money and is quite wealthy. diaries Morrison Dearl.
