The problem of caring for delegates and spectators became more complicated today with the announcement of the date for the preparedness parade. It was believed thousands who would come to Chicago to view this spec tacle would remain over- for the con vention week. Delegates to the republican conven tion who bring their wives to Chica go as spectators will have to provide entertainment for them themselves. The bull moose, however, have ar ranged an elaborate series of pink teas, receptions and dinner parties at Lake Shore Drive residences. The woman's party convention headquarters sent a rapid fire speak ing corps, headed by Miss Mabel Ver non of Wilmington, Del., through the middle west today to draw coowds to the convention. A statistical atlas of the United States has been sent to the Industrial association. The book was secured through the co-operation of Congress man Charles A. Kennedy. According to maps shown In the atlas, Keokuk, in 1910 was In the center of the cereal district of the United States. This might be taken as a little hint to some of the cereal plants of the country, if they are thinking of moving. The 1900 mark showed the center between Hannibal and Keokuk. CHICAGO, May 18.—Government intervention in the strike of 2.000 ex press drivers was threatened today by express company officials who an nounced their intention of applying for a federal writ to restrain strikers from picketing. Johnston Served Notice of Ap peal on Mayor Lofton and Manager Kellogg In Tax Mattsr, The Lee county board of super visors In session yesterday at Fort Madison laid on the table the pro posed resolution which was presented to them, asking for the services of the county attorney in prosecuting the appeal of the city assessor, S. H. Johnston, from the action of the city council sitting as a board of review in the matter of taxation of the Mis sissippi River Power company. It is intimated, according to ad vices from Fort Madison, that the as sessor may carry the case to the dis trict court. It was thought that it was in this regard that he asked for the services of the county attorney. The full text of the resolution which was presented by the assessor and which the board laid on the table is as follows: "Be it resolved, that the county at torney be and he is hereby directed to assist and join in the assessment appeal on behalf of 8. Johnston, assessor, the board of supervisors and any other officers or taxpayers who may desire to appeal from the action of the city council of the city of Keo kuk. sitting as a board of review, in relation to the reducing of the assess ment of'the Mississippi River Power company upon its property. And the county attorney Is directed to take such steps and proceedings as may be necessary to effect and prosecute said appeal to a final termination." 8eeond Appeal Served. The city oouncil was served this morning with a second notice of ap peal from Johnston. This notice is addressed to Ed. S. Lofton, chairman of the board of review, and C. W. Kellogg, manager of the Missisippl River Power company, and in this document the assessor slates that he will appeal from the decision of the council in the matter of reducing the tax on the power company. Visitors invited. —Wednesday's Quincy Journal says the steamer Gardie Eastman came out of the bay yesterday morning and took the big dredge of McWilliams Brothers to Keokuk, where it will go on the dry docks. F., at Odd Fellows hall at 8 o'clock tonight Visiting brethren fraternally invited to attend. —Nauvoo Independent: The sprout ing buds and foliage on grape stocks in Nauvoo appear to be very "thin." Judging from present indications there will be a short crop of grapes again this season. The stocks seem to have been injured—no doubt by the heavy coating of ice that hung on them so long last winter. This had a smother ing effect on the vines. If our grow ers get two-thirds of a crop they will do well. Ft. Malison Democrat: Cameron, Joyce & Company of Keokuk received the contract for the building of the reservoir of the Citizens' Corporation on Denmark hiU. The Keokuk con tractorse were represented by Mr. Joyce in the city today and Engineer Burns of the Kansas City engineer ing firm of Burns and McDonnell cared for the interests of the com pany as designers of the reservoir and engineers retained by the corporation. Arrangements for the beginning of work will be made at once with the successful bidders so as to insure the completion of the container at the earliest possible time. Candidate on 8peaklng Tour.
