A TRIP TO WHF.ALTON ? DEDICATION
OP F.MANTK.I. CHURCH.
Capt. M?M ' do th;iif_'s half
way It looked as if all Irvington was
onboard The party numbered 118
There were bon nie lacees, staid matrons,
old gentlemen and youngsters, all
dressed In their Bonday-goto-meeting
elothetj and all ready for a pit
day. Capt Messick had replenished his
larder the erentng before, and there was
a bounteous supply for ell. A ride of
two hours brought the pirty t i Wheel
ton. Five y<\?re ego there was only
one boose at Whaalton, now then? are
;,i re than twenty, all newly painted
and the place has an air of thrift about
it. that indicates that it Will be one of
the most important point? on the river.
The oyster business il very large and it
1? e inducted principally by Capt. J II
Whaalton and Ospt Win. Uoulbourne.
We were told that Ospt Ooulbourne
shipped over 100,000 gallant of shucked
oysters to the North.'ru and Western
markets the p ??t season,
The object of the excursion was t?i at?
tend th?- dedication of the new Ktnan
nel Church (Methodist), whioh had
been built at Whaalton. Rev. J. P.
Stump, of Fredericksburg, was to
nreach the dedication sermon. Mr
Stump's reputation a- a Bnc speakei
had preceded hi n, and there was u
great desire to hear him.
The church is a pretty frame build
ing, situated a quartet of a mile frorr
the river, and was built at a cost o
$1,500 The interior is tastefully finish
ed and provided with comfortable pews.
A beautiful new organ adorns tho raised
choir stand, ami the pnlpit is built in
a recess, back of which is four windowc
for light and ventilation The pastoi
is Rev, W \j Ware. When we arrived
the chnrch was full and it w:.s vvith
difflonlty the Irvington party obtained
seats. Rev. J. P. Stump was present,
and was aaeisted by He vs. .1. O. Bab
cock, W. C. Burch and W. !? Ware.
Mr. Stnmp preached an able sermon
from Romans, 1st chapter, 111?? verses
The most pleasing featnre of the music,
all of which was good, was the dedica?
tory anthem sung by Mrs. Dr. Farmer,
Who has a fine voice and sings with
much expression. Put the most pleas?
ing feature of the exercises to the trus?
tees was tho successful elf irt of Mr.
Stump to clear a debt of f.,00, which
the church owed. After the sermon he
pointed to the woods nearby, where the
long tables were loaded with good
things for dinner, and said this debt
had to be paid before anybody could get
their dinner. It was not long before
$:>('..> ..0 was subscribed and then every?
body went to dinner, and a good one
it was. Rev. J. O. Babcock preached
at the afternoon service, and Rev. W.
O. Buroh at night. The Irvington
party left at 6 o'clock, immediately af?
