STATUE OF WASHINGTON."
Dr. Laws Girt to the Unlvcrtilty mt
Columbia, Ma, Augv 5. Laws has
laid tho University and Missouri
under an additional debt of
and honor, by securing at an
expense of over 55,000 tlio bronze
Btatuo of Washington in tho Monroe Park
at Richmond, Va., to ndorn tho University
Campus, 04 a companion picco to tho
monument over tho grave of Thomas
Jefferson, which bos recently been transferred
there. Tho stntuo is an exact
bronze copy of IIoudon'B marblo statue
in tho State House at Richmond, Va.,
which is tbo only marblo statue of
Washington executed from life. Tho
artist came to this country from France, at
the request of Mr. Joffcrson, then
to France, and the immediate purpose
of his visit was to sculpture a Btatuo of
"Washington. lie spent some time with
tho latter at Mt Vernon, even taking accurate
measurement and cast of his person
and otherwise securing a faithful and lifo
likeness. There are but three other bronze
casts of tho statuo in existence. One is in
Lexington, Va., one in Washington City,
nnd one in Raleigh, N. 0. Eucn of these
costSlO.OOO. Tho ono just purchased is
obtained from tho family of tho artist
himself. Tho purchaso was effected through
Prof. Fleet, wlio lias had tho statue boxed
and shipped It will arrive here in a few
days. Washington is represented as standing,
bare headed, dressed in a civilian suit
with tho exception of military boots and
epaulettes. His right hand rests on a cane,
and his left upon a column of Roman
fasces, from which arc suspended his sword
and military cloak. The left foot is a few
inches in advance of tho right, and tho attitude
is cosy and natural. The size is precisely
that of tho original, tho height being
six feet two and one-fourth inches.
