THE WASHES GrTOE" TIMES, MONDAY, OCTOBER 29. 1984. 3 CRIP SPORTING GOMMEHT Botk the" Virginia Race Meetings Are Meeting with Success. LOCAL POOTI5ALLISTS ACTIVE f Btfe the OtlaaWa Athletic (Hnb and George tws QeHage Ilevoss Are in. Preparation for tie Thanksgiving Dav Game for the CflinmphmTiMp of the District. JuOgi&C iwm ttit atteadauoe and tbo num ler oC books at tiie two Virginia race tracks there te bat little doubt that both are clearing erpottces, H not making any money. There has boon a lart?e increase during the -week of strangers, and the local people are patronis ing tbe racing better than ever. "With tho ad vantage of -being located nearer Washington and considerably lose expense in its operation tbe Alexander Island track has fully held its own since the Inauguration ot racing at St Asaph. Tbe projectors of the latter meeting have certainly provided a high class of sport, and deserve encouragement, but they are louiewbat disappointed 'with the financial re mits. Tbey are forced to admit the island :rack bat butt tbem more than expected. I'hi6 has necessitated a reduction in ex penses and greater liberaHty with badges, so that now tbe meeting promisee to clear ex penses if bo money is made. An ioteNrtfag incident occurred at St Asapfe one day last week, tbe principals being two unknown ladies and Bookmakers Ike Thompson and Sol Lfcbeasteia. Tbe w-c-ilers obiserved tbe ladies glaacim.' curiously down into tbe betting ring from their position on tbe promenade in rear of the grand s.aud Beats. To give tbe ladies an insight into the game Ike and Rol began betting thousands of dollwre on different corses carded to start. Ike would yell out f 100.000 on Albert A. add Sol would wager an equal amounf on some other horse. Tbe ladies opened wide their eyes and months in wonder at tbe wealth of the universe being gambled away, seemingly without the turning of a hair by tbe plungers. The latter kept at their banter for a while, and then got bacfc to bard pan and commenced taking in 1 bets as usual. m Botfa the C. A. C. and tbe Georgetown foot ball teams are putting in hard licks in prepa ration for tbe annual championship game on Thanksgiving Day. Tbe boys are attending strictly to baainess and will not rest from their labors until after tbe big ganv;. As both teams have already been seen in pubtie the friends of either have bad an opportunity to get a Hue on tbe respective work of tbe elevens. An observant critic said yesterday be fancied Georgetown from what he had al ready seen, but was liable to change his opin ion after the "winged arrow" boys had played more in public. This evening at S o'clock the arena of the Eureka Athletic Chjb, adjoining tbe Alexan der Island race track, will be crowded with too interested m sparring contests. The Mar bout of the evening will be for twenty lounds. or more, between Bill Dunn, of Jer iey Otty, and Fred Morris, Muldoon's " Black Dycteac" Both men are in tbe finest condi tion and a hot fight is expected. The record f these men are about equal in merit. A prehmintry bout of fifteen rounds will Ind as contestants Sol English, of Baltimore, wd Johnny Glynn, of Wilmington. English is tbe undefeated 115-pound man of Mary land, while Glynn is tbe champion bantam Freight of Delaware. He is well-known to the sporting fraternity of Washington as hav ing twtoe defeated Joe Batemau. Tony btaunard will be Glynn's best man, tnd English will be looked after by Jake Kil rain and Johnny Murphy, who recently lougbt Billy l'limrceaw before tbe Olympic 3lub of Kew Orleans. Tbe winners of these bouts will be matched ritfa Mick lunu. of Australia, and Bobby Dunaiturhum, of New York, respectively. Snapper Garrison, tbe well-known jockey, Kill officiate as referee. One-tenth of Each iMcmbcr's Income Given irs Aid of the Poor. There has existed !n this city for tho past year or more an institution that has done much in tho way of unostentatious charity and in a manner worthy of the highest com mendation. The name adopted by its mem bers is the '"Tithing Society." Its members are all prominent young business and profes sional men of Wusnlngiou. Tho methods pur sued by the organization are at onco novel aud unique. The Tithing Society is ouo of tho many similar organizations attached to llamliue Methodist Episcopal Church, and owes its birth to the earnest work and far-seeing efforts of tho pastor, tho Hov. E S. Todd. That gentleman has been tireless in his efforts to relieve the needy and distressed In tho city, and his endeavors havo met with flattering success, as is evidenced by the growth of this, bis latest scheme for the alleviation of tho sufferings of the worthy poor. A Times reporter called on the Bev. Mr. Todd at his residence, near tho church, yes terday to obtain a synopsis of the plans, etc., of the society. The latter seemed loath to speak on thesubjoot, evidently considering it a part'Of the general church work In which the public at largi would have no particular interest. On being pressed, however, and assured that the people of the city were much exercised over the welfare of the many un fortunates in nnd about Washington, and es pecially so in view of the rocent hard times and probable worso winter. Dr Todd out lined the work of tho society thus: "The Tithing Society is formed for tho pur pose of charity; how accomplished, or where is the matter that concerns the member who contributes alone. Each moinber of tho society pledges himself on joining the society to give one-tenth of Ifis annual income, no matter how great or how small, to charity, himself to determine in what direction, or how to be distributed. The officers of the Tithing Society are: President. John W. Scott, proprietor of tho Howard House: vice president. Edgar Wil liams, teacher in the Capitol Hill High School, and secretary, Frank lieofer, with Perry's drvgoods hous " The organisation, which started with hnlf a dozen members, has grown rapidly since its inception and now possesses a membership roll of fifty-seven, whioh is Increasing at each meeting, and gives promise of becoming one of Washington's most benevolent institutions. DOINGS IN ANACOSTIA. Two Negro Women Engage ina Lively Fight Sun'day Services. A fight took place at Hillsdale in the locality known as the "Bottom" Sunday alternoon about 3 o'clock between two colored women from South, Washington, who had filled up at a Hillsdale "speak easy." About a 100 negroes of both sexes gathered and a general riot was prevented by news of the approach of Officer Thomas Andcson. Thetwo princi pal combatants, whose names could not bo ascertained, made for the cars and escaped to the city, aud the officer dispersed the orowd. The fight took place in front of a little shop kept by aegro named Goouloe, who has been frequently arrested charged with running a "speak easy,' but has always managed to escape conviction. Miss Mary E. Wilson, a Methodist mission ary, who has returned irom Japan, conducted the morning service at tho Anaeostin 31. E. Church Sunday, and recited intere-ting epi sodes of missionary life. In the afternoon she addressed the Sunday-school ' children. Mrs. J. MeKendree Riley, wife of the late pre siding elder oTthat name, took an active port in the morning services. At the Baptist Church, Pastor Bev. Hugh Stevenson, the morning sermon was delivered by Rev. I. Newton Earl, a Biblo studmt of Philadelphia, tho subject being "Foretastes of heaven." In the afternoon Dr. Earl delivered a lecture entitled "A bird's eye view of the life of Christ." using illus trated charts. His style is rather that of an earnest and thorough student than an orator, but is pleasing nnd interesting. This morn ing he lectures at the usual weekly confer ence of local Baptist clergymen at Calvarv Baptist Church. Sunday afternoon Peter Hlckey, a forlorn roadster from Washington county, drifted down Monroe street so scantily and raggedly dad as to administer a decided shock to the modesty of Officer J. F. Beagan, whoarreted Peter as a vagrant. At tho station the kind hearted officer donated an old pair of trousors to provide against a similar shock to Judge Kimball this morning. Walter L Crawford, of Bowie, Md., has haed his farm at that place and become a resident of Anaeotia. Judue Benjamin Cross, of Buena Vista, Md., is visiting Mr. John Middleton. or Joffcr son street CALLS HER A WAYWARD WIFE. Mr. Norman Hincs Has Had a Large Dose of Domestic Uiihappincss. Mr. Norman F. Hines, of tho Hines Manu facturing Company, No. 1937 Fourteenth street northwest, manufacturorof pickles, etc., has an attractive, well-furnished residence at No. 3030 Twelfth street northwest, but he says a wayward wifo has nearly destroyed his do mestic happiness. She was Miss Adellard Roach, of King Georga county. Md.. and they were married at Ca lvary Baptist Church, by the Bev. Dr. Greene, on December 25, 1892. Ho was tiien a widower with two children and she a young girl After about two months of married life she wearied of him. said s"he did not lovo him enough to be his wife, and went back to her mother. After about four months she returned to him, and for tho sake of her unborn child ho took her baek. They lived together with fre quent differences and very unnappiJy till a week ago last Thursday, when she aguiu left him to go to her mother, Mrs. Sallio S. Roach, on 0 street She took her child with her. HER FIRST HUSBAND LIVING. That Is Why Moulton Yaegcr and His Wife Agreed to Separate. When Moulton Yaeger. a waiter, of No. 1139 Twentieth street northwest, learned from his wifo, Mary, that sho had just found out that her first husband was still living they agreed that they ought to separate till sho could get a divorce. Sho was granted tho divorce Sat urday by Judge Hagner. She was married in April, 1885. by tho R6v. Walter Brooks to Henry M. Middleton. She was then only fifteen years old. After a month and four days ho disappeared. Shortly sho received a letter from him saying ho had gone never to return. Ho was later reported dead. In 1892, believing Middleton dead, sho mar ried Yaeger, and they lived happily together till May last While in KansAS City in April with her mother, she received a letter from Middleton saying he wanted to see her. As soon as ehe returned eho informed her husband, and they separated. On May 2i sho sued for divorce. LOKDOH PLAYS AND PLAYERS Initial Production of Mr. Gilbert's Kcw Opera, "His Excellency." IT IS A WELL ADVERTISED PIECE Bcorbohm Troo's New PlayjWill Bo Included in His American Bepertoiro Miss Lillian Bnssell's "Qucon of tho Brilliants" Re written by Mr. Bam Langtry's Plans. Copyrighted, 1B91, by tho Associntod Proas. Loxdon, Oct. 28. After a period of wintry weather, London has recently been enjoying a few spring-like days. This, coupled with the fact that people aro nearly all back from tho country, has served to crowd tho leading theaters. At tiio Criterion, for instance, it has been impossible to buy seats, oxcopt in advanco, and tho same may bo said of tho Comedy Theater, tho Court Theater, Adolphi Theater, and a fow others. In fact at some of theso places of entertainment it has been impossible to buy 6eats a fow days ahead. Tho principal dramatic ovent of tho week was Saturday night's premiere of "His Ex cellency" at the Lyric Theater, and it may bo added that Mr. W. S. Gilbert provided plenty of stimulating advertisement for this comic opera, which ho has written in conjunction with Dr. Osman Carr. The production of "His Excellency" has been awaited with considerable interest upon tho part of thoso who aro desirous Of know ing how Mr. W. S. Gilbert nnd Dr. Osman Carr will work in doublo hnrness. Suppos ing tho attempt should he a failure, perhaps tho production of "His Excellency" may bo immediately precedent to a reconciliation be tween Gilbert and Sullivan. Below the sur faco there is much moving in this direction. The action of the story passes at Elisnore, Denmark, and deals with a freak of the Prince Regent, who palms himself off as a strolling player, and in that disguise plays many a prank upon tho peoplo over whom ho ruled, naturally in strict accordance with tho Inws of a country lying within tho domnin of comic opera. Tho romantic interest, which is dovetailed into the satire of tho pieeo, is concerned with tho love of a young sculptor, Erling, for a ballad singor. Of Erling's han diwork, an example, heroic sine, will bo pro seuted on the staue. It is said to havo cost 200 to construct it. Tho opera is, of course, in tho Gilbortian two-act form, the scene of tho first being tho market place, Elisnore, that of the second the court ot tho custlo at the same Danish town. For historical reasons the period of the play is llxed in 1S07. There are in tho cast Rutland Barringtou, George Grossmith, Nnncy Mc intosh, Jessie Bond, Ellalino Torrlss, Alice Barnett, and Gertrude Aylward. Tho latter has a part originally intended for Ada Jeuoure. Beerbohm Treo's next production at the Haymnrket Thenter will bo Haddon Cham bers' new play, which tho London pres3 havo annouucod ni "Two Men and a Woman." but which. Mr. Tree writes to tho Associated Press, "Will bo called, when produced, on November G or 7, 'John O'Drenms.' Tbo play has a particularly strong part for myself and an equally good one for Mrs. Patrick Campbell, who will, with this production, mukt her first appearance at the Haymarket. If it is a success you never know I shall iu cludo it in my American repertoire. Although I havo not decided I think it not improbable that I shall open with tho 'Ballad Monger,' as played beforo her majesty. Later in tho engagement I shall bo seen as Hamlet and FUiStalf, as well as in soveral other characters familiar to Loudon. I am not going to Amer ica simply for dollars. I want to conquer the good opinion of Amorican playgoers." Mrs. Laugtry and her company left for New York Saturday on board tho American lino steamship Pnris. Among tho members of this company are Missos Beatrice Solwyn, Loclercq, and Hall, and Mrs. W. T. Lovell, Frank Fenton, fjlvan Watson, Oscar Adye, "Williamson, and Wentherby. Durinc her American to'ur Mrs. Langtry will rely upon society plays at first, and later upon Shakspear- in pro luctions. She hopes to open iu New ork, if it is posib!o to get a theater there, but her programme is still un settled. When tho "Queen or tho Brilliants" is seen at Abbey's Theater. New York, it will practi cally boa new piece, as far as tho libretto is concerned, and thfre will bo somo new num bers by Jakobowski. When Mr. Abbey found upon presentation of tho piece here that tho book was practically a fiat failure he commissioned H. J. W. Dam to rewrite it. In this connection Mr. Dam writes to tho Associntod Press: "Correcting another man's work is a deli cate matter, and I have no desire to mnke capital out of it. I havo reconstructed the .'Queen of the Brilliants,' putting in a strong dramatic plot such as tho spectacle needed. The new numbers include two solo songs for Miss Russell, ono of them being n slumber song, to which sho goes to sleep before tho tableaux. Thcro aro also two new solos for Hubert Wilke, and a new duet for him and Miss Russell. My changes have not inter fered with tho spectacular groupings and en semble movements which will be given in New York just as they wero first seen in Lon don. Tho piece looks woll in its present shape, if I may say so, nnd Miss Russell and Jakobowski are delighted with it." WINTER EXCLUSION RATES. The Southern Railway Begins Sale of Win ter Tourist Tickets November 1. Tho sale of wintor tourist tickets has been ar ranged by tho Southern Railway Company to buRin November 1, 1894. Iho rates for tho coining season will be about tho same as here tofore and tickets will bo good to return until May 81, 1801. Tho n o w w inter schedules of tho Southern Rail way will afford most excollont accommodations aud through enr facilities to winter resorts in the Carolina1, Florida, along the Gulf Coast, and to Texas, Mexico, and California.
