GOING WAS DECIDEDLY HEAVY Eommoncing with Selecting Frolicsome Lass to Wii. the Openmj Race, tho Talent Eopt Up Snettinir the Winners Throughout the Afternoon, Seating the Entire Gerd. Despite the weather being anything but pleasant lor out-of-door sport yesterday, thore wiis a good crowd made tho Journey to the Alesander Island track, and most of them, especially the "form players," wero well rewarded, five favorites winning. While the public found shelter from the rain during the progress of the afternoon's sport, most of the visitors had to brave tho inclement weather, after the olose of the racing, by waitinr for a train for nerly half an hour. and there was much complaint at the long delay. The bookmakers, of whom thirteen Were on, lost hoaxily, every winner and no some of the placed horses being well ba Led. Considering tho weather and tho uncertainty oi racing over a track deep in mud, the betting was very brisk. Frolicsome Lass, wbo sinnJy galloped home in front of Mattie Chun ana swen others in tho opou ing evont, had been backed down from 5 to 2 to 6 to o, and Fredericks, the winner of the second event, was so well supported that his odds fell from 4. to 1 to 5 to 2. Master Duffv for once in his life showed eomejockeyrhip by placing Fredericks in a WUJ1UIU.U1D .w,.uu.. , t, f"'"- y '- the Department of War; in error to tho court of the race, and after Iri.vey Gardner had so. of appeals of lho District or Columbia; Judg a merry pace for a out half a mile, Master ment affirmed with costs.
