NEW YOUK Sept 21 The Mock rair
Kct continued to bo dominated to day ai
moyt exclusively by the mmemmts In the
so called Copper stocks together with the
trade conditions which are penerallj
credited as being responsible for the fail
ure of the directors of the Amalgamated
Copper Company to declare the H per cent
extra diidcnd heretofore ordered on the
qinrterly
Holh Amalgamated aml Anaconda
scored further exceedingly sharp declines
or the opening of business nnd the gen
tifil Influence of the break In these stocks
extended cen to the foreign stock ex
changes where nil Copper securities were
notably weak Wo Tlnto shares declined
nearly 3 points in the Lordon market
and in addition the metal market at
that point showed a ery snarp shrink
age In the quotations for spot copper
It might be said indeed that specula
the interest centred almost exclustely
around the conditions prc ailing in this
Important industry nnd AVall Street was
Hooded with dcspitches from the
point of production setting forth all
manner of untoward dedopmcnts
It seems scarcely probible that there
should liae been nt this particular time
such a remarkable combination of unfa
vorable deeopments in the copper trade
but at all ecnts Wall Street is now learn
ing of them virtually for the first time
now that Amalgamated Copper has de
clined some a points within a fortnight
It might be added with propriety that a
further sinister Influence bearing upon the
dealings at large today was furnished by
reports that a large llnanclil institution
which hid been closely Identified with the
promotion of the Amalgamated Copper
Company was discriminating against the
stock as collateral
So far as could be ascertained these
statements were misleading and the fact
was said to be that the Institution had
refused to accept the collati ral In a loan
an undue proportion of which was made
up of Amalgimatcd Copper Probably any
other bank would hae followed the same
course but the ldentlt of the institution
in question together with the rectnt col
lapse in Amalgamated stock gave of
course exaggerated importance to the in
cident in question
As alread noted the London market
particular for American stocks was
materially affected by jesterdas break
in Amalgamated Copper and the quota
tions from that point showed declines
which In several cases were in excess of
one point Foreign houses followed up
this lead by heay selling In this market
of the international stocks disposing on
balance of upward of EOOud shares The
local dealings showed more general liqui
dation than has been observed in a long
time This liquidation was not confined
to any particular stocks or special quar
ters of the market but on the contrary
was fairly general A few stocks of the
general class of C C C and St Louis
Canada Southern and Lake Erie and
Western were comparatively firm on light
dealing but otherwise market move
ments were more or less uniform

The action of the stock market yester
lay vns peculiar and it gave rise to
mor than the usual wide divergence of
opinion regarding the future outlook The
break in prices begun on the day liefore
was continued jesterday morning ana
Ibo level went off an average of a point
or more all over the list The weakness of
Amalgamited Correx was the most con
spicuous feature of tho decline and as
far as could be peel caused much of the
selling In either directitms There was a
pretty general oplnion at this time that
the break would extend further and that
the market might fee tho worst tumble
of recent weeks Soon after the opening
however he silling became lesi persist
ent and later In the diy the orders to
sell were outnumbered by the buvlng
orders nnd there Was a recovery to a
level somewhat better on the nverago
tlnn that at the close on tho day before
Meanwhile business became extremely
dull
The optimistic view of this condition
of things was tint the market was oer
sold ord that the decline Is over and
will lio succeeded another good ad
vance It was pointe d out that the m ir
kit had acted verj muih as It has done
heretofore during recent months on a
break As scon as tho professional sell
ing 1ms stopped In other words the de
cline has stopped or so raid the hulls nt
least The argument rmn this is tint
no one wlshc to sell stocks nt tho present
level neither the public nor the big
The other view taken of tho situation Is
that tho Standard Oil neoDo aro the sell
ers of the market and that they believe
it win go much lower 1eopie noiuing
this view stld that tho temporary rally
at the close jesterday ai slmplv duo to
the covering of sliorts to take profits and
that there will be a reiewal of the at
tack In all probability this morning and
later In the week
The gossip of the street nslde from the
Copper talk was not important The di
rectors of the United States Steel Com
pany will hold a meeting next Tuesday to
take up the question of dividends It Is
generally believed that the dividends on
both classes of stock will be declared
The outlook for business for the coming
six months is excellent nnd at the same
time it is said Uiat during the strike the
dividend on the common stock was earned
This is a very good showing If It was
actually made The Steel securities he Id
their own well during the break In the
market
A meeting of the Tennessee Coal and
Iron people was scheduled for jesterday
afternoon It was not thought that the
directors would tatc any action on the
nuestion of a dl Idend for the stock
Opinions regarding the stock are various
but on the whrle the street Is perhaps in
clined to optimism regarding it There
Is the good chance that the company will
be bought by the Steel Trust and there
is the understanding that the earnings of
the past few months have shown a good
Increase To be sure there is no great
probability of a dividend at present on
account of the large expenditures that are
said to have been planned by Mr Bacon
Manhattan was again strong jesterday
afternoon making the best rallj on the
list It was thought at une time that the
Gould interests had been bujlng the stock
on Mondav and that thej had
given up their bull campaign jesterdaj
for the prescnL If they did give It up
the advance afternoon was
good evidence that reconsid
ered their withdrawal The bujing of the
stock at anj rate was of the same char
acter as that of Mondav The earnings
of the are good and the outlook
for the future saj Its friends Is excel
