The developments yesterday were nearly
nl of an encouraging nature and there
were a number of them The Atchison
directors declared 11 divntcnd of 2 per cent
semi annually on the craitnon stock plac
ing It upon a regular i per cent basis
llr W K Vanderbilt arrived In N w
York from Europe nnd although this
event may not b tallowed b any Impor
tant Yandcibllt deal there can be no
doubt that it is a bull fuctor The street
learned that a Standard Oil man has been
appointtd on the board of directors of the
Inlon Pacillc and began to talk of the
significance of this fact In connection
with a probable St Paul Union Pacillc
ilc til The Standard Oil people seemed
more Inclined to favor Amalgamate Cop
pir nnd It looked to some as If the were
ouv Ing the stock A number of good rail
way earnings statements were published
The recent sellers of Brooklvn Rapid
Transit became mi era and then- was
good Inside bulng in Norfolk and West
ern There was a persistent rumor tint
an ixtra dividend will be pnld on Penn
slvanin stock London was a hujer of
American stocks Mone was eas It
will be seen that quite an arrav of fa
vorable matters came to light The only
unf jvorablc factor was the report of the
Urookbn Rapid Transit Compnn for the
pnst ear which showed onl a slight In
urease In net earnings and certainl not
enough surplus to mike a dividend pos
sible this tar or prolnbe for two or
three vears to come The in irkct did not
respond In the wav that might h ive been
hoixil There was dullness for the most
part all da and the changes in prices
were few and not large I he best that
could be s iid of the market was that the
sm ill gams outnumbered the losses Cu
rious enough the strongest stock on the
list was Iirookln Rapid Irinslt nbuut
which the onl piece of bad news was
published while Atchison common was
not boomed nearly to the high price of
the da before and closed little if any bet
ter than the close on Tuesdav The put
look for the market undoubtedly is im
proved however nnd the tone of the
street is more hopeful decidedly than it
was a few das ago Careful people ad
vise bulng stocks on all recessions and
there are many predictions that there
will be a good advance before there is
much of a decline
The Atchison dividend can bo consid
ered in no other wa than as most im
portant m itter This common stoek sold
in IM at 3H It sold below 20 onl aa
long ago as the beginning of last car
During the present ar it sold as low as
424 No dividend was paid on the stock
from the luginning until the present car
and only one dividend Ins been paid on
it li per cent six months ago The
lurnings of the corripan four iars ago
were onl sufficient to pay a little over
the Kcd charges the record for 3S56 7
showing nnxtflMO net tb0Ck1 chirges
J4 CtK Cv and surplus n40flU something
over 1 per cent On the preferred stock
At the present time tho common stock is
Felling at i anu is iswiwiru un -
per cent basis with a surplus list ear
squnl to nearlv as much again as a 4 per
cnt dividend At present stoss earnings
aro double whit the were four cara
ago net earnings something like four
times as large and the surplus list oar
after all charges and dividends was very
near as much as the entire net earnings
in IW 7 This is a record that has never
been cquilcd in railway history and
thtt may never be oqjaicd again Some
people believe that the safe course would
have been to qnlinue the 3 per cent
dividend rate on the common stock this
car but with earnings eonstantly in
creasing over the phenomenal showing of
last car it can hardl be said that the
dlieetors have been less than conserva
tive In their action The stock seems
likely to go materially higher in the near
future though It may be held back or
even allowed to drag somewhat Imme
diately on account of the realizing of
profit that is llkel to take place Yes
terday it advanced to TCi and then de
clined to 76U at the close
There is a theory devoutly held despite
manv denials that the Atchison has been
or will be acquired by Pennslvania in
terests It Is certain that much of the
recent buing of the stock has been for
interests tnat in times past nave ueen
thought to be working for the Pennsl
vanii people If this deal is to be made
It seems probable that the Pennsvanii
people krew of the proposed dividend
action and approved of It This In Itself
should be considered an Indication that
it was a conservati e move It ma also
be taken for granted It the Pennslvanla

A remedy to really cure catarrh must
be an Internal remedy which will cleanse
the blood from catarrhal poison and re
move the fever and congestion from the
mucous membrane
The best and most modern remedies for
this purpose are antiseptics sclentiflcally
known as nucalptoI Guiiacol Sanguin
arl 1 and Hdrastin and while each of
these have been successfully used sepa
rately et it has been difficult to get
them all combined In one palatable con
venient and elllcicnt form
The manufacturers of the new catarrh
cure Stuarts Catarrh Tablets have suc
ceeded admirably in accomplishing this
result They aro large pleasant tasting
lozenges to be dissolved In the mouth
thus reaching eviry part of the mucous
membrane of the throat and finally the
stom ich
Unlike many catarrh remedies Stuarts
Catarrh Tablets contain no cocaine
opiite or any injurious drug whatever
and are equally beneficial for little chil
dren and adults
Mr C 11 Remhrnndt of Rochester N
Y sas I know of few people wjio
have suffered a much as I from Catarrh
of the head throit and stomach I used
spras Inhalers and powders for months
at a time with enly slight relief and had
no hope of cure 1 had not the means to
make a change of climate which seemed
my only chance of cure
Last spring I read an account of some
remarkable curts made by Stuirts Ca
tarrh Tablets and promptly bought a 50
ctnt box from my druggist and obtained
such positive benefit from that one pack
age that I continuea to use them dally
until I now consider mself entirely free
from the disgusting annoyance of ca
tarrh mv head is clear my digestion all
I could ask and my hearing which had
begun to fail as h result of the catarrh
has grcatlv Improved until I feel I can
hear ns well as ever They are a house
hold necessity in my family
Stuarts Catarrh Tablets are sold by
druggists at 50 cents for complete treat
ment nnd for convenience safety and
prompt results they are undoubtedly the
long looked for catarrh cure
