FOREIGN GOLD COMING IN Reactionary Tendency in the Afternoon Reflected in Stock Dealings Many Shares Hecover Partially From De clines of the Opening Hours. NEW YORK, Sept 16. Interest in "Wall Street was dominated again today Ijy the monetary conditions and outlook, and this fact directly contributed to a further considerable contraction in the dealings, for which the principals ot commission houses were largely re sponsible. Notwithstanding the lighter volume of trading, the stock market showed a hardening tendency which was not only due to the reported gold Im port arrangements, but to the more gen eral belief that further and moro com prehensive monetary relief will be forthcoming in the now improbable event of acute financial disturbance. The current reports that Secretary Shaw ls disposed to deposit Government money in the national banks on security other than Government bonds do not find ac ceptance. It is intimated, however, that the Secretary has by no means reached Mie end of his resources. Gold on the Way. In addition to tic 2,500,000 in gold that will be diverted Ty the National City Bank to New York, that institution was" generally credited with a direct purchase of about ?750,O00 in gold in the open market in London for direct im port to this city! A consignment ot.gold to this hank will arrive within a week. There is also Jl, 250,000 in gold on the way from South Africa to a prominent "New York banking house. Payment will e jnade tomorrow, probably over the subtreasury counter, for the lot of $700,000 in gold or thereabouts received today in San -Francisco from Australia for account ot still another banking firm. The limited dealings in railway stocks Were fairly well distributed and although in the early trading declines were sus tained by some of the more prominent railway issues, the market, after a spell of llstlessness, developed a brisk rally ing movement so that final prices in the majority of the list showed net gains. Due to High Honey. The early losses averaged a point and were due to the high opening rates for call money. The extreme figure was 14 per cent and the ruling rate 10 per cent, the Jast loan being made at 4 per cent. The reactionary tendency in money in the afternoon imparted steadiness to the market for foreign exchange. Missouri Pacific led in volume of dealings and, at a recovery of a point from the low est price, finished nearly 1 per cent above .Mondays close. Union Pacific came next in activity and made an equally good rally from the early de presslon, but the net gain was slight. Small net improvements were also es tablished by Atchison common, Balti more and Ohio, Southern Pacific, and Illinois Central, while Pennsylvania, Wabash preferred, and Manhattan Rail way enjoyed gains on the day, extend , Ing to 1 per cent in the first men tioned. St. Paul Recovers. St. Paul recovered almost all of an early decline of nearly 2 per cent. The "Wisconsin Central issues were fairly ective and scored the greatest improve ment in the railway, list. The common left off 1 and the preferred 2 per cent higher. In the miscellaneous stocks "Western Union Telegraph finished 1 higher than yesterday. The Detroit Southern issues were only moderately active, but participated in the rallying tendency, and closed at fractional net Improvements. On light transactions substantial net gains were made by Chicago Terminal common. Fort Worth and Denver City stamped, Iowa Central preferred, and "Wheeling and Lake Erie common. United States Express, on nominal deal ings, left off 3 per cent higher. In the industrAl list fractional im provements were recorded in Amalga mated Copper and Colorado Fuel and Iron, and gains of a point or more were established In Cast Iron Pipe and foun dry preferred and People's Gas. Curb and Bond Markets. The railway bond market was only moderately active. The curb market was Inactive, but the tone was mainly firm. The stock market quieted consider ably toward the close, but left off gen erally firm in tone. New York Stock Exchange, Sept 16. Predictions of rain in the Northwest tonight made a strong wheat market early, but It gave way later, and the close was easy at a slight net loss for the distant mouths, and c lower for September. There wero changing operations by local elevator people, which indicated a desire to mar ket the September, but hold the De cember firm, while it was being done. The weather was fine for the move ment to market. Minneapolis and Du luth receipts were 1,060 cars today. against 712 a week ago, and 1,479 a year ago. Chicago was being shut out of Eastern markets on account of the cheaper wheat that was offered there by Duluth. The latter point reported large cash sales, and the seaboard re ported forty loads engaged for export. Foreign markets did not follow yester day's strength here, and they were eas ier today. At the close there were numerous private reports that it was raining hard In the Red River Valley. Corn was strong early, but weakened later. The September was the weak est of the list, and there 'was a sus picion of quiet selling by a local holder. The Illinois weekly crop report was said to be bearish, but Its details were not known during trading hours. The light estimated receipts for tomorrow helped the market for a time. The weather was all that could be desired for the movement, and temperatures were rising in most of the corn belt. The local stock of contract corn decreased 288,000 bushels for the week, and. Is now onjy 1,295,000 bushels. There was a little easier cnsli market, but no par ticular change In prices. Foreign mar kets w,ere a little lower. Out of 4S0 cars received here today, 100 were con tract. Primary market receipts 393,- 000 bushels, against 516,000 bushels a year ago. Oats were the weakest grain of th list, with the September the weakest month. The weather was favorable for the mcivninent of thn first hnnrls. nml there was no Improvement In the de- mand from the East. Cash markets here were slow and easj', but not quot ahly lower. Receipts were 29!) car3. with eighteen standard, and there were aVo twenty-five cars standard out tf private elevators. Receiving and ele vator Interests were the principal sell ers of September. There was an In crease of 129,000 bushels In the local supply of contract oats. The following are the quotations: WHEAT. Open. High. Low. T3 73i 72 CSi W, ns 70 70 fi'J CORN. 5Si 5S7i 3?
