t
At last the worm has turned < >
N Crushed for years even for centuriesunde the tyrannical heel of a
espotic autocracy the common people of Russia have arisen in their might
Jn aa effort to free themselves
from a barbaric
thralldom that not only de
prived them of the God given right or life if the Czar so willed but of the
s very means of existence lor themselves and their children and made thcr
condition but one step removed from the must abject slavery
J 4 t Revolutionists have always been more or less active in the Russian em
pire but acts of violence have in the main been confined to the mOte
c radical of the inhabitants nihilists anarchists and the likewhose bloody
i > deeds while they horrified the world evoked little if aay sympathy with the
r cause which promptel them t
But the present instance is altogether different Anarchy and nihilism
d have little if anything to do with the revolt that has bathed the streets of
the Russian capital in the blood of slaughtered hundreds it is simply
i D downtrodden people who their demand for relief ignored hounded
t4 lashed and driven to desperation willing gave their lives in the hope that
t1 by their sacrifice posterity may not be compelled to suffer as thev have
i suffered t
r For years the handwriting has been upon the wall for months meetings
1 have been hold throughout Russia culminating in the recent gathering of
t 1 Zemstvos in St Petersburg from which have emanated petitions almost
without number asking the Czar to grant reforms in government No
5 threat was made or implied the petitions aifd representations being couched
i
In the most conciliatory language Reforms were promised and promises
S broken by the government the Czar finally declaring qutright that the
people were presumptuous and impudent that hcwas the ruler and would
rule absolutely
T 5 When the strikers first became active they a ked that the Czar listen
to their petition and a Russian priest even offqred to head the delegation
aE an assurance hat its mission was pacific and that no violence to the
royal personage was intended This request met with absolute refusal many I
t t of the leaders were arrested the priest was excommunicated from the Rus
sian church and the people told in substance that they had no rights which
< the autocracy was either bount to respect or cared to even consider The
revolt followed as a natural consequence
What the outcome will be none can prophesy Russia weakened by
S the titanic struggle in the IFar East is illy able to withstand revolution at
S home and must depend solely upon the remnant of her army which has
r i not been sent to the front If the army deserxrs the Czar the tottering throne J

4 I IN DEFENSE OF
JUDGE CHARLES SWAYNE
I The Westville Advocate and Adver

i that has come out openly in the de
fense of Judge Swayne believing that
1 the impeachment proceedings against
t him areto a large extent the result
of personal animosity In a recent
issue that paper says 0
The impeachment of Judge wayne
0rn our opinion originates mostly from
S pure personal animosity not unmixed
perhaps with some degree of political
prejudice I
I
When we first heard of Judge
Swayne several years ago we even
then heard him charged with t rnJlny

shortly afterwards we became person

under such circumstances asAvas a

southern people and democrats And
I 4 to our great surprise we found that
there was not a word of truth in the

+ Some of our prominent citizens will
remember the circumstances and will

ACCOMMODATIONS
I FOR WINTER VISITORS
l That South Florida cities appreciate
ii the patronage of the thousands of
1 tourists who annually visit the Land
of Flowers during the winter months
is evidenced from the following which
1 appeared in a recent issue of The
Tampa Times and the suggestions
f contaIn therein could be adopted in
this city with profit to the community
l and satisfaction to the tourists who
make Pensacola their home for sev
t eral months in the year
j Tampa is crowded with transient
I visitors as it has never been betora
People coming in since the new year
began are haying much difficulty in
securing quarterns of the kind desired
As has always been the case a largo
proportion desire accommodations at
a rate in thh neighborhood of a dollar
a day aimnly desiring such sur =
roundings as < that money will procure
When they arc not able to find hero
what they want
they move to sur
rounding villages largely Manatee
and the West coast or go hack up
the state
One thing that is very much neeled
here Is accommodation for a large
number of people whose wants are of
this class Roomy and comfortabla
I apartment houses and semifurnished
I cottages to rent for housekeeping
would meet the wishes of hundreds of
I people right now and the roll would
grow to thousands In a year or two
It would be to the interest of tho city
and of the parsons who go Into the I
undertaking if suitable preparation
wore made to house
a thousand more i

0 Some people of the Northern states
have more or lefcs of a desire to live
in the Sunny South and especially in
Florida as It is the state of roses
sunshine fish birds alligator and a
general good easy living place The
Inhabitants of Florida are the most
generous gpod natured and hospitable
people on earth They have good
churches and schools and are them
selves well educated
As to the industries of the Florida
man ho is net the moat energetic man
on oarth for most all he wants is to
keep his table supplied f and a tessi
clothes to wear and he does that
with is little tolPas any man living
Here he can raise two and throe crops
a year while his northern brother I
only makes one and that with hard I
work 9
Just to show you how this Florila
man lives and makes his living Now
the peas are being shipped from here
In carload Ipts and they arc bringing
from 350 to 5 per orate they con
sider themselves on tho even or safe
side if they get as high as 200 per
crate I was out in the country last
Saturday to see an old negro and ho
was busy with about a dozen women
and children picking peas he haU al
ready picked forty crates and had not
finished Now this was the first pick
Ing from two and onejhalf acres Be
sides this he had just shipped the
last of his beans and they netted him
something like 20000 He has just
set out about four and onehalf acres
of cabbage and one and onehalf1
acres of lettuce If these are success I 1
ful which likely will be be will net
anywhere between oQO and 1000
This gives you an idea what can be
done here and just from one season
for next spring he will do the same
thing over again with the exception
of cabbage for that grows all winter
long To prove what can be done I
know personally of one tvoman and
her son not twenty years old that
cleared above all expenses from one
acre of lettuce eleven hundred djl1
