Washington April 15 Secretary of
the Navy Meyer today announced that
he had decided to grant the request
of tae people of the states of Mis
sissippi Louisiana Arkansas and Ten
nessee to allow the battleship Mis
sissippi to proceed up the Mississippi
river as far as Natchez
He has notified the governor of
Mississippi of this decision stating
that the navy department is perfectly
willing to have a battleship at Horn
Island on the gulf coast in June 1
so that the presentation of the ves

work upon the construction of a
handsome club building for the Prog
ress Club will commence and once
ground is broken the work will be
pushed forward rapidly to comple
tion While the club has been con
sidering the erection of a suitable
home for a year or more it was not
until a recent meeting that every
thing was arranged for the awarding
of the contract Bonds sufiicient to
erect the building have been sold
the entire issue being taken by mem
bers of the club
THREESTORY STRUCTURE
The building will be three stories
in height and every floor will be de
voted to club purposes On the first
floor will be the dining room kitchen
and store rooms The second floor
will contain the parlors reception
rooms etc while the third will con
tain a large ball room with a stage
at one end for amateur perform

The building will be of brick ve
neered trimmed In stone and marble
and will be a handsome buiiuing
along Colonial lines It will occupy
the site on Vest Chase street now
