Lizzie James a twelveyearold ne
gro girl who was arrested by Chief
of Police Sanders pleaded guilty yes
terday morning in the recorders court
to having stolen three finger rings
from Miss Marguerite Drennon a
waitress at Hotel Escambia
The girl is also charged with hav
ing stolen several dollars from Miss
Drennons room at the hotel
The rings have been returned to
their owner and the girl is now in
the county jail awaiting sentence by
Judge Beggs of the criminal court

G Spence who yesterday failed to
pay his balance at the exchange
clearing house and was given twenty
four hours to make a settlement had

Stevens the aeronaut makes his next i
balloon ascension he will take with
him a wireless telephone through
which he is assured by the maker
he will be able to carry on conver
sation with persons on the ground
no matter at how high an altitude
he may fly One of the telephones
is attached to the basket of a balloon
which he is rigging up for an ascen
sion He expects to test it in a
flight over the city in a few days

The business of Mr Jungen was not

Harriman party did not advertise his
visit to the city or its purpose It
was given out however that he will
leave this morning It was also stat
ed but not authoritatively that he
will prcceed from here to Panama
Yesterday the yacht took on a
quantity of coal and supplies and is
ready for the trip

was today elected for the tenth time
as president of the Conference for
Education in the South which closed
here tonight Before the conference
adjourned the following resolutions in
part were adopted
Improvement in country supervis
ion as a strategic point in the entire
educational system
Professional training of teachers
would meet the just demand for more
efficient service and especially the
strengthening of the department of
education in higher institutions for
the training of men as teachers and
principals of high schools and as sup
erintendents
Extension of local school improve
ment leagues to every community in
the South and an earnest effort to
place in hnproving the work upon a
selfsupporting basis
Continued efforts in behalf of com
pulsory education in such a manner
as maybe deemed wise for each state
We are glad to note that congress
has begun to make a distinct increase
in appropriations of a national bureau
of education as to what hitherto has
been made was totally inadequate
to the needs of the office and pain
fully disnroDortionate to the impor
tance of the interests It serves We
respectfully urge upon congress that
it undertake without further delay
the placing of this bureau upon a plan
of efficiency such as will enable it
to render in full the service which
the states represented in this confer
ence require and expect from such
federal office

American missionaries have been
killed in the antiArmenians outbreak
at Adana Asiatic Turkey according
to information received hero from
that place by telegraph this after
noon At midnight neither the Amer
ican ambassador nor the British em
bassy had received any further news
concerning the massacre or confirma
tion of the reported murder of Ameri
can missionaries at Adana
Conslar telegrams received lore re
port half the town of Adana has been
burned and the attacks upon Armen
ians extending into tho Vilayat Com
munication with the disturbed district
is interrupted however and reports
received must be taken with caution
A large number of Christians are said
to have been killed One report says
sixty Armenians have lost their lives
and many houses looted and burned
Tho Selamlik today was visited by
a great cdowd The sultan was loud
ly cheered His majesty gave an au
dience to ministers and reiterated to
them his solemn assurance he would
uphold the constitution The city is
returning to normal conditions
