SOMETHING FOR. YOU, SIR r it j j ; j m s&Z THE COTTON MARKET n :: New Orleans NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 15. Fairly wide advances were made by cotton in the early trading today but in the later trading the gains were lost and replaced by net declines. From ad vances of 33 to 42 points over the close of yesterday, the market fell to de clines of 18 to 41 points below-. The close was two points up to 18 points down, net, on the session. Decern ber traded as high as 16.23, as low as 15.42, and closed at 15.63. The early grains were due to a much better Liverpool than expected and to the bullish figures on American mills for October from the census bureau. Consumption of 494,745 bales, however, was disappointing to some traders who had in mind the forecast of 533,000 bales issued by a private bureau sev eral days ago and, finally, the com parisons of 484,647 bales consumed in September and 401,323 in October of last year were lost sight of and enough selling came On the market to chee the upward trend. Reports that Lancashire spinners were voting on a proposition to reduce their running time to 24 hours a week, increased -the selling and further weak ness developed following the report that Germany had announced that it would be unable to meet reparation payments early next year. The near months were weaker than the distant and this wag eaid to be due to hedge selling of both December and January. New York. XEW YORK, Nov. 13. An opening advance in the cotton market wa,s fol lowed by a break which carried Jan uary contracts off from 16.85 to 16.18, or within ten points of the low level touched at the close of last week. The market then steadied on renewed cov- last half hour with January closing at 16.44 and with the general market closing steady at a net advance of 3 to 10 points. The market opened firm at an ad- the prospects for limitation of arma- ments. This carried prices back to nearly the best figures touched on the rally of yesterday morning, but there complaints vl a pour iiulub uniwuu, and apprehensions that the scattered southern selling here might be the forerunner of snot liquidation. De- comber broke from 16.85 to 16.23, or " 1 20 to 23 points below last night's close figure after which there was a spurt J 'of cove.rlng accompanied by talk of a better feeling in the stock market. Last prices showed rallies of 20 to i'5 points from the lowest on most po- tuitions. year's consumption of 401,325 bales. The early afternoon break vas due partly to reports from Manchester that Lancashire manufacturers would vote on A proposition to reduce the number of working hours from 48 to 24 hours per week in mills using 1 .'American cotton.
