I the Tines. * Office Fhoue a °s> Editor’s Residence 86 A, & M COLLEGE EXHIBIT. ________ f Makes t-lne Showing at the Missis sippi State Fair. Th re is no abatenvnl in the crowds which dai.y gather at the [run 1 of the A & M exhibit, and there hsien to ihe > xp ana lions by ihe young man in charge and examine lor them selves everything from the cast of boll weevil up to the beauti fully completed bill of dress goods made on the wonderful power l*oin. The college has nude exhibits before, but never one so complete in ail of its de partments as is ibis one. Nor ! one with young men so courteous ad anxious to please ad those who c me their way. Timre can be no question as to I this being the mo-l interesting and instructive of all the ex hibit on the grounds and the ; p'ople demonstrate their wis dom in coming to see it often and slaying late. The least striking, tn that it ds but a series of photographs, piutone of the most important, , sections of the exhibit is the se ries of photographs on the South and West walls which show the college a it is, and as trie man agement hope to have it, when all their contemplated improve ments are made. The new hundred thousand dollar chapel dormitory, Chera ical laboratory and Mess Hall ’i 1 bring the place up to some thing like it ought to bn, in the eyes of its real friends, and many of these are a'most ready , now for the finishing touches. The display of iron work is excellent, and shows that the boys are carefully trained in all that belongs to this important department. The beautifully de signed bent ,rou work, as well ss Hie plainer, and more neces sary pieces constitute a beautiful exhibit. This torge shop work, as it, is called, is under the direc tion of Mr. Caipeuter a good man for the place evidently. 1 here is also a fine showing from the drawing department, of free hand, mechanical and architectural drawings Mr. Bragg is in charge of that Ve . r y important section, filled by the wood workers and the fur niture makers. One glance at the many people of small pieces made therein and a careful study °f the furniture which is on dis play convinces one of Mr. Bragg’s efficiency at once There is furniture there, made by the students, which would be highly creditable to the ablest manufacturer in the country, and iljs hard to make some peo ple believe that the toys make it- Mr. Bragg also assisted Mr. Meadows in arranging this ex hibit at the Pair, and it is highly cremiaolo to both gentle men. Avery interesting part of the display is the lathe which is be operated b, Mr. Foster and *here he is constantly making l iuy wooden souvenirs for the children. Mr. W. B. Mont gomery operates the engine or lr on lathe next to this. But, with all due respect to all of these fine exhibits, the special attraction of the whole show arej 1 o looms One if these is an o fashioned hand loom which run as a proof of the slow I methods of ancient times to ne cessitate the pushing of the old ones were as they were so made to necessitate the pushing of the shuttle by hand, while this one has a string to aid the operator. Mr. J, B. Shelton opera*es this, and all the old ladies stop .and talk it over will) the young man, before going on to the big power loom ul Mr. T. S. Savela, close by, where the big bolts of figured dress goods are made with such marvelous swiftness This ma chine is indeed a wo .der, and when the day comes that our boys will understand the impor lance of learning ail about the inanufactuie of our own textile, it will be a glorious day for Mis sissippi and her staple product —cotton. Perhaps the most acutely in terestiflg point in all this space, for the farmer and his family, is the space devoted to the Colton Sta'es, of which the boll weevil stands easily first, with us, just now. This small, insignificant looking creature makes more .ban the young folks turn pale as they gazi into the glass case. It, makes the old farmers sick as they contemplate its awful p s sibilHies, and see in the near fu ture. th ir devastated fields. But it is not well to dwell up on these unpleas *nt possibilities, every variety of the bug, good and bad, there is a display of new work, to repoi torial ears, though the science itself is not by any me ms new This is the “Department of Agronomy,’’ if you please, and shows the length of the staple, the number of bolls to the stalk, and all that pertains to a knowledge of rec ognizing and selecting the best cotton for a given purpose as well as bo a* to avoid the bad. Prof. Perkins has a fine lot of fi st class Johnson grass hay on display in which the gentlemen lake very evident pride. We should think it very necessary for them to have a good grade of bay up there inasmuch as they have plenty of sleek to eat it. right along. One visit to the stock pen will prove this. Some of their cattle look quite able to eat a bale of hay at one fell chew. Prof. Hand, the stale chemist has a fine display of the com parative value of our feed stuffs. f Enjoy Good Health. There are eleven different varieties of feed stuffs, and the protein, carbohydrates, crude liber, and crude fats are shown in alt of the eleven. Small in compass, but large in importance, and exhibit with in this exhibit is,not under the big dome, as they have a splen bid lot of stock, some of which was their display last fall. In his cus we recognize the mag nittceut thousand dollar two year old horse, Inverness St. Thomas bled in Scotland, which look toe first premium at the Madison Square Garden Horse Show last jear. There are two superb draught horses, each weighing 1,600 pounds, and thin 100, they tell us. A jack of r.ire value, some fine mules, and a mnlecollof winch they are immensely proud, as it is but 17 months old and looks every bit the grown mule, miy be seen likewise. All the cattle from the animal husbandry department is fine They have with them several specimens of dairy cattle—such as their Holstein Presians; and of their beef cattle their Aber deen Angus herd, each of which looks capable of furnishing food for any army; all by itself. With thesadaler “Dr. Hart” of Kentucky, one reaches the end of the A. & M. Exhibit, except the chickens, which will be de sbribed elsewhere. The Pair is grertly indebted to the college for thus helping out, while the people are indebted to the de parlments for letting them see for themselves just awhat tlr y have and what they are doing up there. Under the care of suchj young men as Mr.- Meadows and the gentlemen who are with him, the display is bound to be a suc cess and will result in unlimited good to the college and to the slate which suppoles it so liber ally. This school for our boys ought to he the biggest thing in the state, if properly managed, and with these young men to help it along, it will go far on ihe way toils destiny.—.lack son News For thirty Years. “Inclosed find money order for one dollar for which please send me its Morth in Simmons Liver Purifier, put up iu tin boxes.
