A Maine Liquor Law to be Urged
At the late Tcrapcranco State Con
vention at Columbus it was resolved
to submit the following resolutions to
the State Legislature, which meets
next January :
The coramittce-to whom was referred
the subject of ft memorial to the Legis
lature of the State respectfully report
the following recommendations ; That
the Convention request the Executive
Committee, at an early day, to take
the best legal counsel, and mature the
most radical, and at the same time the
most practicable measures, looking to
tbe attainment ot the iollowmg objects:
1. The enactment by the General
Assembly of tho State of Ohio, at -its
next session, of a , law prohibiting en
tirely the of intoxicating liquors
within tho State, except for medicinal
or mechanical purposes, and providing
that rales for these purposes shall be
made only by persons under bonds of
t least one thousand dollars not to vio
late such law; and
2. The enactment of a law providing
for the establishment within the Stute
of an asylum for inebriates; and that
the Executive Committee be requested
to prepare and distribute throughout
the State suitable forms of petitions for
the signatures of the people, and to use
tho most efficient measures to secure
tho passage of such laws by the Legislature."
The Man Who Getteth on a Spree
The following, from the Richmond
Examiner, may possibly have somi ap
plication in this latitude :
There is a class of men of peculiar
habits in every community, not only
in the populous city, but in the quiet
and peaceful country villnge, whose
hearts nre opon to generous impulses,
and whose minds are not unfrequvntly
endowed with gen ins, at whom. the
Thariseo points the finger of scorn, and
for whose short-comings nd failings
society in general has but little sym
pathy. We allude to the habitual
epieer the man who gcttcth up be
times in tho morning and cock-tuileth,
and repcateth the dose an indefinite
number of times, until his brain
whirlcth, his legs refuseth their oflice,
and he binketh down on tho soft side
of the pavement, u helpless victim to
the wiles of Bourbon or needle gun
whisky, as the case may be. Such men
often Jiecp sober for many weeks, and
then, uudcr the influence of the times,
fancied misfortune, or a well-tilled
purse, think they may venture to take
one drink. It will dixpel care, raise
the spirits, and set thorn on their feet
cguiu: The drink is taken, and this
drink begettelh an appetite for another.
The spirits begin to rise, and a happy
feeling of prosperity warms up the
heart. The devoteo of John Barley
corn has commenced his practico at
the bar in earnest. A purty of jolly
fellows come in, and he treated, and is
treated in return. Ilia little pile ol
currency becomes -'small by degrees
and beautifully less.'' So long as it
lasts he is generous, and never lacks
for "appends" to join him in a drink.
Finally his legs begin to get drunk,
but his brain ia clear. . Ho knows what
he is about, and will stop when he has
got enough. Another drink, and
another, until a search of tho inner
most recess of his pocket fails to bring
to light another dime. Ho asks the
barkeeper for credit. "AVe don't do
business in that way," is tho ready re
ply. By this time ho is pretty drunk
all over, staggers out, and falling into
Borue friendly doorway, finks into the
arms of "nature's swoet restorer, balmy
sleep." If he happens to escape the
notico of the vigilant policeman, he
awakes at . a luto hour of tho night,
minus hut and shoes, whioli have been
taken possession of by some wayfarer
whose necessities doubtless drove him to
the act. Hatlces and shoeless he goes
to his lodgings, and after a troubled
sleep wakes up with a burning thirst
xie bis no money, nut must nave a
drink and he gets it. In fact, a man
can manage by shrewd engineering to
got wh'iBky when he can't get anything
else. The experiments ot the peevious
day are repeated, and kept up, per
haps, for a week, when the jolly chap
becomes sick, takes medicine, sees the
folly of his course, makes marvelous
resolutions, and swears ho will never
touch another drop. And, generally
speaking, ho nevor does until the
next time. Upon tno least rising or
sinking of the mercury in the mental
thermometer, hois olt'uguiri, showing
that fair promises, liko pie-crust, are
There are many young men of ex
