THOUGHTS IN A SNOW STORM.
Ai loaning from the casement,

Which wear a crown of tliorns,
Serenely peaceful eyes, which prove.

Worth Remembering.
A gooJ tvomaii never grows old.
Yenrs may jiass over Iter head, but
if benevolence and virtue dwell in
her heart she is as cheerful as when
the spring: of life first opened to her
view. When we ho': upon a good
woman we never tli nk of tier age,
she looks ns happy as when the
rose first bloomed upon her cheek.
The roio has no; fatl.nl yet; it will
never fade. In her neighborhood
she is a friend and a benefactor; in
the church the devout worshipei
and exemplary Christian. Wht
does not lova and respect the wo
man who has passed her days ir
acts of kindness aud mercy; wht
has been the friend of man antl
God, her life has been a scene ol
kindness and love, devotion to
truth and religion? We repeat,
such a woman cannot grow old.
She will always be fresh and buoy
ant in her (spirits nd active in hei
humble deeds of mercy and benevo
lence. If the young lady desires to re
tain the bloom and beauty of youth,
let her not yield to the way fashion
and folly; let her love truth and
virtue, and to the close of life she
will retain those feelings which
now make life appear a garden oi
sweets ever fresh and green.
A STRANGE STORY.
MOUNTAIN PEOPLE ALARMED AND
FORTIFYING.
FORTIFYING. [Jamesboro (Tenn) Flag and Advertiser, 14.]
A gentleman recently from
the Slieltou Laurel district of
North Carolina, some forty
miles from this place informes
us that the people in that "dens
ely thicketed" country are
greatly excited in regard to the
appearance, upon several diff
erent occasions, and in Rcver.il
places, of a huge mountain
monster, the species of which is
unknown. Mr. Gerge Ander-
son, one of the
gcntlemen re-
siding
in the Laurel country,
.IT 1 1
being one of the persons who
saw the monster, also furnishes
us with the following descrip
tion of it:
"I was out in the jungle
huuting up some lost hogs,
when all of'a sulJen there came
into my path a beast, the ap
pearance of which, I must con
fess, caused nie to quake for
the first time in many years.
Aside from its strength and un
usual appearance the unearthly
yell it uttered on perceiving
me, which reverberated and re
reverberated through the forest,
was enough to shake the sense
ol the most daring adventurer.
The animal was some hundred
yards distance from me, and
appeared tr be a Luge black
bear with mane and head like
a lion, but had horns like an
elk upon it. Its tail was long
and bushcy, with dark and
light rings around it to its very
extremity. Its eyes gleamed
Jike a panthers, and its size
was that of nn ordinary ox, but
somewhat longer. Just prev
ious to its making its , appear
ance I had shot off my gun at
a squirrel, and felt little pre
pared to meet such a ferocious
beast without any weapon of
defense. I relreatcd in as
good order as possible, and. I
must say I did some good run
ning, not looking back until I
had reached an open fipot,
when I found the animal had dis
aneared in the laural. thicket.
This is no story, Mr. .Editor,
gotten up (oFcare naughty Vbil
drcn. I am not the only one
. who lias seen the iiionster
several have wen it since I did,
and as sheep and calves are
lately miKsiu, it is presumed
to be ft carnivorous brute.
Many have fortified : their
houses to i) re veil t & night at-
tack from the fdratigc' monster,
the like of which was ' never
seen in these mountains before.
borne think it has escaped from
some, rambling menagerie, while
others superstiiously think jt Is
sent, to warn people of' some
great approaching daagcr."
