Maxims for the Farmer.
. vOnJy good farming ; pays
Ho who Bowsi'dr plants without

assurance - of good
crops annually, had better earn
wages of some capable neighbor
than work for so , poor a pay
master as he is certain to prove
2. The good farmer is proved
by the steady appreciation . of
his crops. Any on& may reap
an ample harvest from a fertile
virgin; the good farmer alone
grows good crops at first, and
better and better ever afterward.
3. It is far easier to nuintaiii
the productive capacity or jst
farm than to restore it. To ei
haust its fecundity', and then
attempt its restoration by buy
ing costly , commercial fertili
zers, is wasteful and irrational.
4. ! The good farmer sells
mainly such products as - are
least exhaustive. , Necessity
may constrain him for the first
yetr .or two to sell grain,' or
even hay ; but ho will soon send
off his surplus mainly in the
form of cotton, or wool, or meat,
or butter and cheese, or some
thing else that returns to the
soil nearly all, that is taken
from it A bank account daily
drawn upon while nothing is de
posited to its credit must soon
respond, "No lunds." So with V
farm similarly treated.
5. Rotation is at least nega
tive fertilization. Ic may not
positively enrich a farm; it will
at least retard and postpone its
impoverishment He who grows
wheat after wheat, corn after
corn, for twenty years, will
need to emigrate before the
term is fulfilled. The same
farm cannot support (nor en
dure) him longer than that
All
our great wheat-growing
sections ot fifty years ago are
wheat-growing no longer, while
England grows largo crops
thereof on the very fields that
fed the armies of Saxon Har
old and William the Conquer
or. Rotation preserved these,
as the lack of it ruined those.

When to Sell Grain.
: A correspondent of the Even
ing Wisconsin writes : I would
say to you, the one great mis
take of the farming community
is this : the practice of contract
ing debts to bo paid in the fall
of the year instead ot having
them come due in June or July,
in order to have the benefit . of
the fall and spring markets. I
find ' a great many of the far
mers sell their, last bushel of
grain atpne-half,or two-thirds
its value in order to pay their
liabilities, and so lose the prof
its, thereby damaging them
Bejyes and the surrounding com
munity.by draining the country
of every dollar, leaving nothing
to make improvements with. I
have - noticed that the miiklle
.ineo, are fully aware of your ob
ligations, or, if . not, the first
-thing you do is to inform them,
by saylngj' "1 must raise some
money to pay debts j what can
you give me a bushel for, my
grain H. That gives them to un
derstand that you are obliged
' to soil, no matter what you get,
and they take the advantage of
you

Sowing Plaster.
A correspondent of the West'
rn Farmer writes: The best
1 7.
method of sowing plaster is un
doubtedly a. machine made for
that particular business, as it is
heavy to' carry and rather dirty
to handle. la the absence of
that, one J have practiced con
siderably is to put your plaster
in a wagon near the hind end ;
then, with a driver, a person
can sow his plaster very evenly
and comparatively with ease.
Another way is to carry it in a
basket and sow by stakes simi
lar to jsowing broadcast. . As, tq
too proper time to sow on
wheat, I would state that if you
seed with clover, immediately
after seeding is the best time ;
if not seeded, I sow
t
faster,
nop:
as
I have never . received any
benefit" by-putting it on wheat
The best time to sow plaster on
clover is after it ' gets a good
start, generally about May, 1,
but neVer efore the grass
sWrtWas have noticed L some
farmers doing this spring.

How to Insert Screws in Plaster
Walls.
; lij .often becomes desirable to
insert screws in plaster ' walls;
without attaching them to any
woodwork'1 but when we turn
them in the plaster gives way
and our effort is vain. And yet
a screw may be inserted in
plaster so as to hold light pic
tures!' etc., very firmly. The
best plan is to enlarge the hole
to about twice the diameter of
the screw, fill it with plaster of
paris, such as is used for fasten
ing the tops of lamps, etc., and
bed the screw in the soft plas
ter; When the. plaster has set
the screw will be held very
strongly.
