disabled by wearing out
their hoofs. The war-horses

Kind Words.

never
There is a ma,ic power
gentle words, the potency of
which few natures are so icy as
wholly to resist. Would you
have your home a cheerful hal
loweu spot, witnm which may
ever be found that happiness
and peace which the world de:
nieth to its votaries,' let no
harsh word be uttered within
its walls. Speak gently to tlia
wearied husband, who with an
anxious brow, returns from the
perplexities "of his daily avoca
tions, and let him in his turn.
speak gently to tho care
woman, who, amid her
ending round of: little duties,
finds rest and encouragement
in the sympathy of him she
loves. Speak gently to the
wayward child ; a pleasant
smile and word of kindness
will often restore good humor
and cheerfulness. Speak gently
to the dependent who lightens
your daily toil ; kind words in
sure respect and : allection,
while the augry rebuke . pro
vokes impertinence and dislike;
speak gently to the aged ;
many are the' trials through
whlcJV they have passed, and
now a little while and they will
be missed from their accustom
ed place ; the spirit will have
passed to its rest. The remem
brance of an unkind word will
then , bring a better sting.
Speak gently to the erring one ;
are we not all ; weak and liable
to error? Temptations, - of
which we cannot judge, may
have surrounded him. Harsh
ness will drive him on the single
way, gentleness and love
win him back to vlrtuo.
