A Simple Remedy. Dr. Ui.ow
i:r, of Liverpool, states that he
has for the past twenty years
employed compressed sponge
very successfully in the. treat
ment of in-growing nailr). His
method is to render the sponge
compact by wetting, and then
tying it tightly until it is thor
oughly dry. A bit of the
sponge in size less than a grain
of rice, is placed under the nail
and secured by strips of ' adhe
sive plaster. In this Svay the
point of the nail is' kept up
from the toe until the surround
ing soft parts are restored to
their normal condition by. ap
propriate means. Of course
there is no pain in this remedy,
and its application requires on
ly ordinary skill.
Sometimes a taint almost im
perceptible, will be found on the
chicken killed yesterday and
meant for dinner to-day, or on
the last of the steak in the bot
tom of the jar. If it is a really
suspicious taint, really decom
position, throw it away; but,;
if not, it can be easily removed
in boiling. When you put it on
to cook, take cold water, into
which you have put a few
lumps of charcoal, tied up in a
thin white cloth. After it has
boiled awhile take out the char
coal. The meat will be found
to be all right. In cooking
corned beef or pork, or a boiled
dinner, if the smell annoys you
and you have to keep out of the
kitchen, it will be lound to be
effectual to put a bit of red pep
per in the boiling pot, say
twice the size of your thumb
nail.
A Test of 1ji kk Wateu. An
rhiglish technical periodical
points out an easy way of test
ing whether .water is good and
lit for general use. It says:
" Good water should be free
from color, unpleasant odor and
taste, and should quickly afford
a lathor with a small portion of
sonp. If half a pint of the wa
ter be placed in a perfectly
clean, colorless, glasS'Sloppered
bottle, a few grains of the best
white loaf sugar added, and
the bottle freely exposed to the
daylight in the window of a
warm room, the liquid should
not become turbid, even aller
an exposure of a week or leu
days. If the water becomes
turbid it is open to the grave
suspicion of sewerage contamin
ation ; but if it remain clear it
is almost certainly safe. We
owe to Ileisch this simple, val
uable, but hitherto strangely
neglected test."

healing properties in the new
oil extracted from hen's eggs
are said to be very great, and
it can be easily made. First,
the eggs are boiled hard; the
yolks are removed, crushed and
'placed over a fire, where they
are carefully stirred, and as t he
substance is just on the eve of
catching fire the oil separates
and may be poured off. One
yolk will yield nearly two tea
spoonfull8 of oil. In the south
ern part of Russia it is much
used for curing cuts and bruises.
