Cleveland, O., Aug. 11. At 4:30
Monday altornoon the most violent
wind btorin that has been experienced
here for many years broUo upon the
city. The government thermometer
registered 02 degrees previously. When
it cleared away, 80 minutcb, tho mark
was 70. MaJ. Stockman, of tho weath
er bureau, reported tho velocity of the
wind at G3 miles an hour. Telegraph
and telephone wires parted like straws
and dangled In the air from their poles;
wagons were overturned in the streets
and the air was filled with Hying
debris.
OThero were dozens of pleasure yachts
and steamers on the lako which was
lashed into a mass of angry waves.
Tho greatest excltcznont prevailed all
along tho lako front.
Thousands of people watched the
buttle of m elements and the gallant
men who were lighting for their lives
on tho angry waters. Among the
yachts which were caught in tho storm
were tho Priscilla and tho Avocet. The
Priscilla weathered tho galo and was
towed into tho port by a tug
which went to her rescue. The Avo
cet was far out and is still missing.
The Clipper, of Cleveland, went down at
the mouth of tho river in 17 feet of
water. There were five men aboard.
Four of them swam to the pier, tho
other clinging to tho vessel until res
cued by tho life saving crews. They
had hardly landed when a cat boat
loaded with men was seen to capsize in
tho basin. The life havers were quick
in action and succeeded in saving all of
the engulfed men.
The cup challenger Vencicdor had ti
desperate struggle. She was cruising
in tho lake when the btorm struck her.
Sho quickly hove to, and under cobc
reefed bails, after great trouble, suc
ceeded in entering tho harbor. The
Sprite, just arrived from Toledo, struck
the pier at the llfo saving station
and capsized. Airtight compart
ments prevented hero from sinking.
The Diana, of Hamilton; Eva, oi
Toronto, and Pearl, of Cleveland,
dragged their anchors and went
ashore. The Trilby was overturned in
the basin with four men aboard. They
were espert swimmers and made their
way ashore. A large propeller is
ashore at the foot of Ontario street, In
side the breakwater.
The wind caused much damage to
property throughout the eity.
PRACTICALLY ENDED.
The I.ork-Out. or Strike, at the Drown
lloUt Works About Over.
Clevi.laxd, O., Aug. 11. The strike,
or lock-out at tho Blown Hoisting
works, in this city, is practically atnn
end. Of tho bOO men who went out on
strike, 500 are now engaged in other
employment, leaving 300 in the strikers
ranks. These aro receiving little or
no financial support and are seeking
now jobs wherever they can be found.
The Brown Co. have now 3S5 men at
work and Monday refused 25 applica
tions for employment. Tho company
exhibited to the reporter of the United
Associated Presses Monday a contract
which they had just closed with the
Krupp Gun Co., of Essen, Ger
many, for the construution of three
complete sots of hoisting machinery
and three Parker Elwell motors of 00
horse power. Tho value of this con
tract is $50,000, the work to be com
pleted before September 1, 1697. Other
contracts of recent date aggregating
$200,000 are on hand, and tho manage
ment .states that the strike is no longer
a matter of consideration to them.

Ft. Wavke, Ind., Aug. 11. The in
tense heat which has prevailed here
for the past week was broken at 5
o'clock Monday afternoon by a violent
downpour of rain, a veiitablc cloud
burst The temperature began to fall
at 3 o'clock and at 5 o'clock the city
was deluged by the heaviest rain that
has fallen in 21 years Xearly all the
streets were Hooded and much damage
was done in the business section by
water in the cellars where goods were
stored.
Lightning plajed numerous pranks,
but no one was serionsl' injured.

death loll Monday larger than its pred
ecessors of the present spell, and no
hope is extended by the weather fore
casters of a cooler day Tuesday. Of
the deaths reported to the health and
police departments, and tho c.ises taken
to tho county hospital, 43 were record
ed as having died, directly or indirect
ly, from the heat.

There was only one fatality in this city

Alderman John Warden, aged 03 years,
was overcome Saturday and died Mon

Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 11. A dis
patch to the Sun from Terre Hauto
says that a son was born to Mr. and
Mrs. Russell U. Harrison Monday af
ternoon. He will be named William
Henry Harrison.

Tho first balo of cotton of the crop of
1890-07 was received in St Louis Mon
day from W. Ii Woltcr, of Prescott,
Ark. It weighed G32 pounds, classed
good middling and was sold for nlno
cents a pound.
J. D. Archbold, of the Standard Oil
Co., says there is no truth in tho dis
patch from Berlin that tho Standard
Co. had entered into a combination
with European oil refiners to control
tho trade in Europe.
At Milwaukee, tho temperature was
not quito as high Monday as on tho
previous day, and but one case of sun
stroke was reported. Tho tempera
ture was highest at 2 p. m., tho mer
cury straddling tho 00 mark.
The thermometer was not as high at
Evansville, Ind., Monday as for some
days past, going only to 95 in tho
shade. Four men were prostrated, and
three of them nro expected to die.
The hospitals are crowded with tho
victims of the heat for the past few
days.
At St. Louis, Wm. M. Bunker was ar
rested on a ehnrgo of disorderly con
duct while wildly haranguing a crowd
on Twelfth street. It was discovered
that ho was demented, presumably
from the heat. Bunker is a salesman
for the Keystone Axle Co., of Pitts
burgh, Pa.
The Murray Hill bank, doing busi
ness at 7G0 Third avenue, New York,
one of the oldest state banks in tho
city, has closed its doors. A notice,
signed by the state superintendent of
banking which was posted on the door
states that the bank is closed, pending
an examination of affairs.
At Decatur, 111., after a week of un
usual heat the temperature foil to a
more comfortable point Monday even
ing, registering 76 degrees nt 10 o'clock.
A heavy rain fell Monday afternoon.
The Wabash railroad closed down
their shops in this city on account of
the hot weather. Two hundred men
wero laid off.
The freight steamer Lizzie Hender
son, of Philadelphia, lying at the foot
of West Forty-sixth street. New York,
was discovered to be on flro at 5:'10
o'clock Tuesday morning, and whUo
being towed down tho river sho sank.
Tho cause of tho fire and tho loss aro
not known, but it is thought that tho
damage will bo heavy.
Samuel K. Martin, of Chicago, died
at Alma, Mich., Tuesday morning of
kidney complaint, aged 59 years. Mr.
Martin was president of the S., K.
Martin Lumber Co., of Chicago, tho
largest lumber firm in the world, con
trolling altogether 45 yards. Mr. Mar
tin was also interested in several mines.
A widow, ono daughter and four sons
survive him.

Heat Victims In Now Vork.
New Yoiik, Aug. 11. Up to noon
Tuesday 46 cases of prostrations and 25
deaths were reported from different
partb of the city. In Brooklyn eight
deaths and 23 cases of prostrations
were reported. Several deaths and
prostrations were also reported in Jer
sey City Tuesday. Tho temperature in
this city at 2 p'clpck Tuesday was 04.
