THE TEMPER CF SINGERS. A Manager Sajs Musician. Are Hani t Get Along With CaaM In I'oint. "I rever knew a bass singer who wasn't good uatum!. obliging and willing to be corrected and reprtn ed. Next to the bass singer comes the alto. She is a little more independent than the bass, a little more touchy and indifferent, but still little fault can be found with her. But the tenor and soprano are often terrors, tho soprano seeming to be the worse of the two. I guess it is natural, though, for a female scold to be a little sharper than n male. 'Professional tenors are almost inrari ably conceited, willful and stubborn. They ant to hare their own way. and sulk or fly into a passion if they can't hare it- This difference In the deport ment of singers is due, I suppose, to the nature ot their parts. The base and alto are naturally subordinate to the tenor and soprano. It is the tenor and soprano who get the encores. They arc petted and courted and in some cases almost deified. Naturally get conceited in respect to their ability. Any correction or warn ing on the part of the director Is nlmo-t regarded in the light of an impertinence. It is a good thing to show one's apprecia tion of n hat is ell done, but the flattery of repeated encores pfays the mischief with tenors and sopranos, anl becomes a source of bane to directors. "A case in point to illustrate the will fulness of singers is that of Pnrepa Itosa in old Farwell hall, Just before the great fire. I was the director, and the piece pro duced was The Creation.' As you know, the last chorus Is quite moderate time, interchanged with embellishing passages. One particular part Parepa insisted on singing in a florid stjle about twice as fust as it was meant to be sung. In vain I pleaded and argued with her, assuring her that her way was not customary and that the chorus could not possibly follow her. Xo, she was master of that particu lar part, and she would sing it as she chose or not at nil. Finding her obdurate, I told her that I sboulsj not ask the chorus to take a faster time, and that if she per sisted In carrying out her whim I should break tho time to 6ult her and change back after her part was finished. She didn't care what I did. The solo parts were all she was specially interested In, and I could manage the rest to sulfrny self. So brent tlio time re ti,T mnllnrr an awtivnrd bitch andalj but a-polling the I , piece un tnc same evening, a little fur- thcr on, she essayed to strike liiSh Cl tiUVlt: lb 03U a, nilllCU O.I Oil. "Another case when the prima donna came out second best occurred when I was conducting I oilman's 'Lay of the Meln sine' in Louisville In J677. Mme. Pappen beim was the prima donna. The compo sition was entirely new, both to her and t o the chorus. At the last rehearsal I was cry nnxious to have the whole thing car ried through with full oice, just ns at the ftual production. A large paid audience was assembled. But Slme. Pappcnhcim refused to carry her part as I wanted bcr to, urging; as an excuse the weariness pro duced by such rehearsals. I knew that she had been singing Wajmerian opera seven times a week and gloryinjr in it, and i mm uur to. xiui no; sue screened ner real motive, which was mero capricious ness, nnd insisted on having her way All the others sang with full voice till It came to her, but she would not move. I pur posely tittered a few words of remon MRinte k that the audience could hear me nnil tiassed on. The next solo part was by Mr licmmertx. who came ont strong anil full and did his best. Thcau dicuce was cry demonstrate e and warm ly encored him. Thfc. was too much for the prima donna. Jealousy overcame her contrariness, and, coming meekly for ward, she asked if I nonld not repeat bcr part so that she conld sing it as Mr Rem- incrtz had ld. Of course I complied ilh her request and she tang everything else us sui: aa ..ajs-cicu. a iiau lameu me prima donna." Chicago Times. Union Co-operative tarket street. This is to certify that I have examintd Cleveland's Superior Baking Powder, samples of which I purchased in open market, and that I can recommend it as a good, wholesome, and unadulterated article. It does not contain ammonia, an ingredient of many baking powders, and one which I regard as highly objectionable, ; SllaCC it seriously impairs examined biscuits baked with an ammoniated powder, and have found, as has been repeatedly declared, that the ammonia was still there. Cleveland's powder gave the amount of pure carbonic acid claimed for it by the manufacturers. EDGAR F. SMITH, Ph! D., F. C. S., Prof, of Chemistry in Wittenberg College.
