One of the most striking evidences of
the growth of pauperising in this country is
the constantly increasing number of
itinerant beggars, o.'the maimed, halt and
blind classes. Singing on the public street
seems to have become a favorite method of
soliciting alms with them. It is new to
most of our people, and betokens a very un-
.pleasant condition of things throughout
the country.
We do not know that the circuit court
adjourned over until Friday to give the
members of the bar an opportunity to at
tend the Suuday-school pic-uie to-day; but
we do know that no county in the State can
produce a bar comparable with ours for the
piety of its members. A busy day in our
court resembles nothing so much as a re
ligious revival where the bretheren give
full play to their holy feelings. There is
earnestness of manner, loudness of voice,
energy of gesture, and a general atmos
phere pervading t he whole of every man
for himself and the old boy take the hind
most.
The prohibition of tlie sale of beer at
St. Mary's park on the coming Fourth
meets with disfavor. If the parties who visit
Cairo on that day yearn for beer, and will
promise to drink enough to last them until
the succeeding Fourth, we are in favor of
letting them have it, as a measure of tem
perance diplomacy; but St. Mary's park
does not comprise the city, and no
persons need stay away, fearing the
article cannot be found. It is
proposed by some of the saloon keep-
ers to reduce prices for the occa.M'on, and
;ive to the thirsty veoniaiiry two glasses for
five cents. Where is the Council;
