MOVEMENTS OK THE Al'STKIANS.
Vienna. August H. The followini; is the
official announcement of the movement of
the Austrian tnxp in Turkish provinces:
The Thirteenth Army Corps ml vanced in two
columns against Malai Autrust.V One col
umn cannonaded the insurgent's camp while
the other moved on their think and rear.
The insurgents emlcaverod to retire upon
Sheptsche, when an enifiieinent ensued,
which lasted half an hour. Twotiasand a
quantity of munitions were captured by the
Austrian. Many insurgents wore killed
and wounded and twenty were driven into
the river Hosnia and drowned. Darkness
prevented pursuit. The Austrian loss was
two killed and ten wounded. lai;lai was
found deserted by ullexceptinff a few Chris
tians, and the town was spared. Twenty
five Russians, missing after the disaster to
the Austrian reconnoitcrintr column at Ma
lai on the 4th of August, have returned to
camp. Several of the insurgent were sum
marily tried and shot for murdering wound
ed Austrian Hussars.

The Aiit or Phowinoino Like. People
generally desire Imi life ami ,'xxl health.
Sickness hikI premature death are almost
Iways due to violations of the laws that
j,'overn our physical bein),', und of which the
masse an; ignorant. If men knev Ix tti-r
they would ilo better; but how can they
avoid an evil that they know not of t While
ffortH arc made through the public gc Inxils
to give each child a ko-culled common
English education, yet the children are K-r-mitted
to .'row uj) and enter iixm the re
xponsiblu duties of active life, profoundly
ignorant of the ftructuro of their own
lxxlies, and the laws uf ihysical beinji
upon which their health and lives de
pend. They are sent to schixil and cram
med willi arithmetic, grammar, an I geog
raphy, by teachers who, in many instances
have never studied physiology ami hygiene.
They are taught to hx'ate the mountains
and trace the rivers of foreign countries,
but art; never taught to locate the vital
organs ami glands of their own lxxlies, or
trace the veins, arteries, and nerves, in their
various ramifications. Tlu-y arc instructed
in the flow of the tides, and the course of
the (ean currents, ami the philosophy of
winds and storms; but they have no correct
conception of the relative effect upon their
health of breathing pure or impure air, nor
has their attention ever Ix-en culled to the
importance of keeping their lxxlies clean
and healthy hy regular bathing. Tliecrim
inality of such neglect in t .'itching becomes
apparent when we consider that the masses,
ignorantly violating the law of health,
bring upon themselves sickness, sufforinp
and death, that might otherwise 1x2 avoided.
In this condition of thinys we welcome into
Ix-ing any work that is calculated to i p..rt
to the masses a knowledge of the structure
of their own lxxlies, the laws of health,
and flic importance of observing those
laws. We find Dr. Pierce's Common
Sense Medical Adviser to be just such a
work. It is physiological and pathological,
and the major part of it should 1mv converted
into a text-hook for the use of common
school. Its careful study will enable the
healthy to preserve their health, ami the
sickly to regain health. Every parent reud
it, und as their children lx-come of pmx-r
age instruct them in the all-itnxirtant
truths it contains. AVere this done, much
sum-ring and premature death would be
prevented, and many a youth saved from a
life of shame and licentiousness. The Ixxik
