The Octavin goes to St. Louis to-day to

are necessary to make Cairo the largest
town in the Mississippi valley.
The attention given to the yellow fever
sufferers on the City of Vicksburg during
her trip up from Vicksburg, several weeks
ago, by her clerk Mr. Chris Sharp cannot
but receive the hearty admiration of all.
He fearlessly nursed the sick during the
entire trip, and through his untiring exer
tions several valuable lives were saved.
We arrived at Cairo about one o'clock
p. m., to-day. The place shows the effects
of the scourge. It looks dull and forsaken,
and its sanitary condition is not the best by
any means. About the only pleasant object
that greeted us here was the genial face of
" Walt," river correspondent of the Cincin
atti Commercial, who paid our office a visit.
Above from the Golden Rule Pilot. On
the day mentioned, the wharf was lined
with steamboats; hundreds of tons of
freight was being handled ; the levee
crowded with people, and a more animated
scene could not well la- imagined. As to
the sanitary condition cf our town, the chap
who penned that item, knew as much alout
it as a donkey does a passage in Revela
tions. AN OHIO MAN'S VIEWS.
"Why, take New York State, for in
stance ; 'they make niicIi a howl about their
victory there iu Congressional elections,
when the fact is, New York is so appor
tioned that if the State went Democratic by
40,000, the majority of the Congressional
delegation could be Republicans. Then
there's Pennsylvania; it was always u Re
publican State, and if it hadn't been for the
split iu the Democratic party over the
money question, this year might have told
a different tale. In Massachusetts there
was ii'iso a split iu the party, which accounts
for the way things went there In fact, in
every State that went Republican, the Dem
ocrats were divided; so that I can't see
where the great victory of Republicanism
over Democracy comes in."

An Open Letter :--It Speaks lor Itself.
HocKfoiiT, Mass., April S, IR77.
Mn. EntTon: Having read In yonr paper the re
poria of the remarkublo cures of catarrh, I am In
duced to tell what i know ubout cutarrh. and I fan
cy the "snuff" and "InhaliiiK tube" mukera mnro
dollar grabbers would be glad If they could embla
zon a similar cure in tho papers. For twenty year
I have Buttered with catiirrh. The nasal passage
became, completely closed. Snuff, duat, ashe. In
haling tubes and sticks would not work, though at
lutervala I would snuff up the so-culled catarrh snuff
until 1 became a valuable tester for such medicine.
I gradually grew wrse. and no one can know bow
much I suffered or what a miserable being was. My
head ached over my eye so that I was con lined to
my bed for many successive days, suffering the nott.
Intense pain, which nt one time lusted for Pis) hour.
All sense of taste and smell gone, sight and hearing
gone, nervous system shuttered and constitution
broken, and I was hawking and spilling seven
eighths of tne time. I prayed for death to relic
me of my suffering. A favorable ntlce In your
paper of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy Induced me to
Snrchusc a package and nse it with Dr. Sage's nasal
oiiche, which applies the remedy br hydrostatic
pressure, the only way compatible with common
sense. Well, Mr. Editor. It did not cure me in three
fourths of a second, nor in one hour or month, but
iu less than eight minute" I waa relieved and in
three mouths cures) and havo remained an for over
1H months. While using the Cuturrh Remedy I used
Dr. Pierce's tiolden Medical Discovery to purify my
blood and strengthen my sfoinncli. I' also kept i,y
liver active and bowels regular by the uee of hi
