The weather the past three days has been
freezing cold, with a steady wind froru the
north. Yesterday waa warmer and thaw,
in j,', and there is now every indication ot a
general break up and warmer weather.
The boat at tho landing and the wharf
boatt were compelled by tho heavy ice run
ning out of the Ohio yesterday and the day
before to suspend work, and seek a safe har
bor in the Mmsisaippi, giving the levee a
dull and deserted appearunce.
BuaineM is very quiet, hut without mate
rial change in prices since our last uxue.
FLOUK This staple is very quiet owing
to the want of river facilities to ship south,
as much ax anything. Prices arc unchang
ed. Stocks are fair in nearly all grades.
WHEAT Prices are steady and un
changed. Ik'coipts arc all taken at quota
tions. HAY The demand continues active for
strictly choice, and all that arrives rinds
ready sale. Fancy timothy sells as high a.s
$11 00. Common hay is not wanted.
COltN' -There is very little movement.
Prices remain without change. Receipts
arc so light that stocks do not accumulate.
OATS Steady and unchanged. Not
much doing. Prices hold firm at 22t&23
cenU, the latter price for choice heavy oats.
MEAL A little more movement, but
still quoted very dull. Prices are un
changed. BH AN The market continues firm with
a steady demand for all receipts.
BUTTER Choice butter commands good
prices aud ready sale, but should be well
packed. Same grades of butter poorly
packed must sell 2yJ3 cents less thauwhen
puton the market in good shape. Shippers
would do well to make a note of this.
EGG.S Steady and firm. Sales have
been made at a shade lower prices.
POULTRY Offerings are small. The
demand continues good for all kinds. ,
GAME Tho market is flat; nothing
APPLES Tho demand is steady for
choice, and stocks are nut allowed to accu
POTATOES Prices on Northern pota
toes are firm mid advnncing.
SALT MEATS Prices advanced a quar
ter of a cent yesterday.

Captain John Keisu returned to St. Ijouis

The John B. Maude came up at noon yes
terday and went into the Mississippi.
The Port Eads arrived from New Or
leans on Sunday, and took lodigng in the
Mississippi with the balance of the boats.
The City of Alton arrived about C o'clock
Sunday night, and went to the Mississippi
to lny up. She hsM about 1200 tous of su
gar and molasses.
The A. C. Donnelly, of the Southern
Transportation company line passed up the
Ohio Sunday. Her officers were in hopes
of reaching the Tennessee before striking

News reached this city on Sunday to
the effect' that the C. B. Church, of the
southern transportation company's line, had
been sunk by the ice in eighteen feet of wa
ter, on Saturday evening, while lying in
what was supposed to be a safe harbor at
Alton, about forty miles below Louisville.
She had a big cargo of sugar and molasses
Ice began running in the Ohio late Sat
urday. Three coal boats belonging to Ra
ven's fleet, a salt barge and a part of the
dry docks in the upper end of the city were
sunk. On Sunday there was but little iie
in tho river, and it Mas generally believed
that the worst had passed, and I he expec
tant crowd that lined the levee during the
entire day began to think, toward evening,
that there had been a "job put up" by si due
one, and that the whole thing waa a big
scare, This belief was dispelled however,
yesterday. At eight o'clock a continuous
line was to be seen as far as the sight could
reach up and down the stream
and reaching in width about one
third the way across the river. This field
began to widen and grow heavier as the
day advanced, and at five o'clock last even
ing the whole, river was 0110 soled sheet of
heavy uJ the most dangerous kind of ice.
