THE TEXAS PACIFIC 11. R.
(Krom the New York Sun.)
The South, with prostrated industries
and recently ravished by pestilence, calls
loudly for aid to secure some share of the
transcontinental trafiic. A benefit to South
ern trade means a benefit to all, and equity
would seem to demand a patient hearing
for tlie claims of that portion of tlie
country, provided they are brought forward
under appropriate and reasonable condi
tions. Aud while we hold to tho opinion
that no government subsidy, even in the
form of a loan of the public credit, ought
to be granted, we have no objections to tell
ing our Southern friends what are the nec
essary limitations within which alone their
application might properly be listened to
and considered. .
I. If there is to be any loan of govern
ment credit, it must lie rigorously restricted
to the trunk line from Fort Worth to the
Pacific. No branches whatever can be in
cluded. II. One-forth of the construction and
equipment must be paid bythe company out
of its own actual capital."
III. The real cost of work must be as
certained .by ollicers ot the Uuiied States
engineer corps, appointed for that purpose,
and the government aid must be confined to
three-quarters of that cost.
IV. The government must hold a first
mortgage on the road and plant.
V. All the public lands granted must re
vert to the government control, so as to be
sold to actual settlers.
VI. All earnings for government trans
portation must be retained in the treasury.
We think that a bill carefully drawn
and containing these features, and really
presented in behalf of the Southern people
and tis an antidote to Jay Gould's monop
oly, would be entitled to respectful consid
eration; and in deference to a large public
sentiment it should be thorougly debated.
If defeated on its merits, a troublesome,
question will be removed from congress,
and then our fellow citizens of the South
cannot complain that they liavo been re-
lused a hearing.
Florida. A throng ot sufferers, with
coughs and colds, annually go south to en
joy the ethereal mildness of the land of
flowers. To them we would say the neces
sity of that expensive trip is obviated by
Compound Honey of Tar, which speedily
vanquishes the coughs and colds incident to
this rigorous clime. For public speakers it
surpasses the Dcnuisthcric regimen of "peb
bles and sea shore;" clearing the throat un
til the voice rings with the silvery cadence
of a bell. Use Compound Honey of Tar.
Price 50 cents a bottle. Barclay Runs.,

unequalled, and its effect simply electrical.

ing virtues. Barclay Buns., Agents,
