. A SAD STORY OK SAXE.
Front the Albany Arjiua,
The sad statement is made that John
Oodfiey Shxh Iihh succumbed to melan
cholia, and that he is an elleeting example
of mental suffering. Asa poet and lec
turer Mr. Saxe has given so much pleasure
to so many that the fact of his intellectual
disorder will excite much symoathy and
regret. Mr. Si:xe first appeared as a poet
in the old Knickerbocker Magazine, in
184U. 1 1 is fir-t deep mark was made in a
poem called 'Progress," a satire, and since
then he has become well known as a hu
morous poet, sketch writer and lecturer.
Born in Eranklin, county, Vt., in lislG. Mr.
Saxe was admitted to the bar in 18M, in
his twenty seventh year. Not long after lie
removed to Rurlington, Vt., ami became
editor and owner of the Sentinel, which ho
managed with success and popularity. He
was the lormal and lun loving candidate of
a hopeless minority for governor for
several years in succession. About fifteen
ycarr, ago Mr. Saxe removed to this state,
practicing law in New York and residing
in Kirst Place, Brooklyn, Reverses have
overtaken the gentleman of late years, and
painful illnesses have befallen him and
members of his family. He denies himself
to his dearest friends. His gloom is abso
lute and beyond relief. Among lecturers
Mr. Saxe will hold not a hiih rank, but
there io no doubt lie is a poCt of a distinct
though not high order of ability, and that
he has done much, of transient value
in itself to make lighter the contem
plation by readers of their hardships, or to
enable them to bear or forget them. Mr.
Saxe as a lover of the good things of life has
not excluded from his affections the good
things of the table, including ita wit and
humor, and he was much in request in for
mer years as an after dinner speaker. Tho
tax which good livers pay on their consti
tution has ljeen paid by Mr. Saxe, but it
was hoped that his heal'h would come back
under a system to which he subjected him
self. That hope appears to be fallacious,
and the broken down condition of Mr. Saxe
will excite not a little sympathy.
CoNsrMPTiox Clrkd. An old physician,
retired from practice, having had placed in
his hands by an Ea.st India missionary the
formula of a simple vegetable remedy, for
the speedy and permanent cure for con

tested its wonderful curative powers in
thousands of cases, has felt it his duty to
make it known to his suffering fellows.
Actuated by this motive, and a desire to

The following Cure is probably the most remark

Gentlemen, I hereby certify that 1 have had Ca-tnr-h
for ten vcor. and for the last six year have
been a terrible suft'erer. I was rendered partially
deaf, bad buzzing in the head, pains across the
temple, dizzy spells, weak and painful eyes, swol
len and ulcerated tonsils, hard and constant cough,
severe pain acrof the client, and every indicutiuu
of consumption. My head ached all the lime. The
matter accumulated so rapidly in my head aud
throat thut I could not keep thuin free. Frequently
at night I would spring out of bed, it seemed to me.
at the point of suffocation. 1 would then huve re
course to every means lu my power to dislodge the
mini from my throat and head belore being able
to sleep again. For a a period nf six vears my ton
sils were ulcerated and so much Inilumed that I could
with difficulty swallow. I flnally cotstilted an emi
nent surgeon In regard to an operation npon them,
brtul hinreque-t postponed It. The constant infla

poisonous mutter droppingdow n from mv head had
so Irritated and iuftiuiicd my lungs that'l c mghed
Incessantly , deep hard cough Meanwhile my
svstem begun to, show the effects of the disease, o

to improve rapidly. Tho first dose seemed to clear
my head a I had not known it to he for years It
seemed gradually to arrest the discharge. It (top
ped my cough In three dnys. By nslne It a a gar

my tonsils, so that they soon ceased to trouble inu.
The soreness across my chest disappeared, the buz

and bearing were completely restored, and every
symptom of disease that hud reduced me to tha
verge of the grave disappeared hv the use of San-

I have been thus explicit h-jcnuse, as a druggist, I
have seen a great deal of suffering from Catarrh, and
hope tneonvince many that this is a great remedy.
I am familiar w ith the treatment of Catarrh as
practised by the best physlciuns, and have consulted
the most eminent about my case. I have used ev

peared during a period of six venrs past, and have,
