Johnson, left Paducah together yesterday
morning, and made n test run of it to Cairo.
We can scarcely call it a race, if we accept
the testimony of passengers on the Cham-
pton, ami we nave no reason to tiouor
the veracity of our informant, who was one
of them, for it seems the Champion "had it
all her own way from the first jump. From
Paducah to Metropolis she left the Johnson
a full mile in the rear, when she lauded and
took on a lot of wagon material. When the
Champion backed out from Metropolis, the
Johnson had gained a lead ot between seven
ami eight miles. Between Metropolis and
Mound City the Johnson made six landings
and the Champion three, the two boats go
ing to the bank at the last named place on
almost even terms, the Johnson having but
very little advantage. On leaving Mound
City the Champion lmd her noso at the
Johnson's wheel, but was hailed by a skllF
with n passenger, who she took nljonrd,
and the Johnson ngidii opened a gap of
about four hundred yards, but was over
hauled Just as she mnde the turn in the
bend above, this city, when the Champion
bid her farewell, coming to the wharf-boat
with u leud of eix hundred yurds. The
Johnson Is a spti"litly littte craft, but can
not bo compared with the Cltumpion for
speed, as will he readily seen when the-tact
is known that the Champion made the run
from Paducah with two buckets of her
