TriE Democrats of Ohio have" nominated
Gen. Thomas Ewingfor Governor, and Gen.
A. V. Rice for Lieutenant-Governor. The
convention acted with much T wisdom, and
the Democrats appear to have better
chances in Ohio than they have hud for
ytars. The bucccss of this ticket would
make a lasting impression on the politics
of that Btatd" and virtually decide the pres
identi'al contest of 1880.
Tbb sWuian organ in Washington ton
cedes that the Democratic Ohio State tick
et is twenty thousand votes stronger than
any other that party could have put in the
field. As the Republican majority in Ohii
averages less than ten thousand, the con
cession is equivalent to the acknowledg
ment that tho ticket can't be beaten.
Ewingof Ohio is already booked as Ohio's
next Governor.
The tremendous Democratic majority in
Cook county, is giving the wire pullers und
pipe-layers of the Republican party uneas
iness. It has cost Governor Cullom a trip
to Washington, and many consultations
with Republican congressmen. The con
elusion arrived at is that Republican forces
of tho State must be thoroughly re-orgun-ized,
and that, to that cud, money must be
used. And now what do our leading Dem
ocrats propose to du? "Will they sit idly
by and see arrangements perfected to rob
them of1 their hard-earned vantage ground?
Such has been our custom.
Ik k early all of the judicial districts of
Illinois party lines were drawn, and the .fit
ness of the candidates was subordinated to
political considerations. This being true,
the result gives a very strong iutimutiou of
the f relative strength of the two parties.
"While we cannot say that it indicates a
clear Democratic majority in the State, it
certainly does show that good, effective
-work on tho part of Democrats, thorough
organization and singleness ot purpose dur
ing the twelve months to come, will wrett
Illinois from Republican control. Shall we
not, then, get down to earnest work, and,
in 1880, bring Illinois back to the faith of
the lathers?
The Jetty reports of Capt. Brown of
the United States Coast Survey Service
most serve, to the Cincinnati Commercial
and Memphis Avalanche, as so much gall
and wormwood. The opening of the Mis
aiasippi valley to the commerce of the
world without giving those sheets "a job,"
is '"bad" on the sheets, but an achievement
over which the people arc growing jubilant.
Capt. Brown'a latest report is that, at flood
tule there was a jetty channel of 20 fee;,
wlt)a a channel 25 feet deep and Hh) feet
-wide across the bar. When it is called to
mind that this is a deepci channel by two
feet, than is found on the New Yoik bar
off Sandy Hook, Captain Ead uiHy wel l 1 e
proud of hit success, aud well may the peo
ple applaud him. In the channel bIkjvc
the pass, at low tide, are twenty-five and
one-tenth fect, and all this Iuh bn
achieved five mouths ahead ot;tiuiv, actual
Jjr, nd eighteen months provisionally.
And thus, despite the Commercial and
Aralanche, E.ds achieve 'successus and
the peoplo profit by thein.
A THE time of the year for such things
baa arrived we give tho Atlanta Medical
Journal' aunt curu for hydrophobia. Th
. cure u certainly simple and harmless, anil
tho lurredibDU can be procured iu any ot
the drugstores: Take equal parts of chloro
form and concentrated ammonia; mix and
apply with sponge or soft cloth to the bitten
parts, fivb or ten raitfutes. If the parts are
swollen, then, rub with ammonia and spir
its of turpentine, equal portions, mixed,
Continue this a pplication a day or two.
The physician who used the medicino says
that in a practice of twenty years ho never
lo6t one of the scores of cases he treated.
It is said to be' equally effective in cases of
snake tnfes, ttitei of poisonous insects etc.

for six months ending May 31, 189, was
examined and approved, and his bill for
nf,nii)r,P(i oriminnl foes was on motion
allowed.
The report of Patrick Morgan, justice of
the peace, of an inquest held on tho body
of Joshua Johnson, a child about one and a
half years old, was not approved, and his
claim for fees not allowed, inasmuch, as the
supreme court has decided that a Justice of
the peace cannot legally hold an inquest
when the coroner is in the county. And
the board is reliably informed that said in
quest wrs wholly unnecessary.
The bill of Dr. J. W. Renfro, amounting
to $12, for medical attendance upon one
Michael Walsh, was on motion rejected, as
there seem to have been no authority given
for this charge upon the county.
Tho bill of Thomas Martin, amounting
to $11.73, for coffins, burial, etc., of James
Monroe and son, was also rejected as no
authority was given for such expenditures
by any county authority.
The board thereupon resumed the exam
ination of claims and other business con
uected with county affairs, pending which
it adjourned until to-morrow morning at 8
o'clock.
